Joe Bowen checks in from Vancouver and discusses the current predicament for the Leafs in goal. Leafs brought four goaltenders with them to Vancouver. Brian Burke discusses his lack of interest if he meets with Gillis or not.
Joe Bowen says the difficult part for Francois Allaire is that “there are only two nets on the ice, so trying to get everyone enough work and making sure the wounded get back into game shape will be a difficult task as far as allocating who gets to do what, and when and where. So the road trip is a great time for this team to be on the road and get the time for what needs to be fixed.”
The Leafs will play the Canucks tomorrow night at 7:00 PM EST, a game that I will be liveblogging on The Score. The Leafs are still chasing down their first win of the season, while the Canucks are coming off an impressive game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.
There is still no word as of yet to who the Leafs will play in goal, but the odds seem to be in Gustavsson’s favor despite having just one practice since recovering from his brief injury stint with a groin issue.
The Leafs visit the Canucks after settling a tampering issue that occurred during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in which Burke, Nonis and Fletcher discussed a rumored deal between the Canucks and Lightning. As per the Vancouver Sun:
“If I didn’t see Mike, that wouldn’t be a snub,” Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke (above) says of meeting Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis while here for Saturday’s Canucks-Leafs game at GM Place. “In my building, I always go down and talk to the visiting GM, ask him if they need anything. I don’t know what Mike does. If I see him, I’ll say hi to him, but if I don’t see him I wouldn’t consider it a snub.”

I would bet Jonas plays saturday. If so and he hurts himself again, don’t think for a second we will go more then a few weeks without making a move for someone else
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm
@ rustynail
Didn’t see the game, so I missed his slew-foot on Peverley, but I guess it wasn’t quite as dirty because he is only being fined, no suspension. Unless it could be there are two standards… one for superstars and… no, couldn’t be.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Your right and everyone knows it about the stars are treated like cancer patients in the NHL. Did anyone see the penalty on Hal Gill last night on Tavares? That was by far one of the worst calls I have EVER seen in my life. But we gotta protect little Johnny boy!
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:31 pm
@ Jordan
“If so and he hurts himself again…. making a move for someone else.” SOMEONE ELSE, now, who might that be… hmmm… any ideas Jordan?
Has to be original… LOL.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:33 pm
@ Jordan
Hey, Jordan, that pylon Gill plays for the “Smurfettes”, any call against them is a good call… never forget who the enemy is!
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I’d love for Gustafvson to play but I wouldn’t rush him into a game.If he is fully recovered play him, If not don’t play him.
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
I know but seriously look it up. I hate them but I was yelling it was so bad!
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
toleafs: Used to live in Vancouver and go to the PNE to see the Leafs when they came to town. I was one of the few vocal Leaf fans and got booed a lot, but it was fun. What’s it like now?
October 23rd, 2009 at 5:48 pm
the Leafs better fucking win tomorrow. I just got home and found out my 130 gallon fish tank has fucking ick again….another $50 down the hole….well only $30 once they win
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:11 pm
@ Jordan
You gotta send any newly purchased fish to the minors (maybe a 20 gal tank) for a couple of weeks till you’re sure they are healthy. BTW win and tank should not be mentioned together in the same post.

@ Bob is your uncle, i know you ask toleafs, but its pretty much the same, id like to think we’re louder when we score, they just got the horn, but every year theres more faithful canuck fans. They’re all fags though, they will loudly taunt u in hallways for the jersey your wearing, constantly ask when the last cup was etc. And its funny bc there drought is almost as long, fact is, they haven’t won since the millionaires which was what? like 1912? haha. Regardless its always a dandy of a time, especially seein all the other leaf fans around. Gotta love it, not to mention, i, like you, am super loud, always lose my voice after the first. Hopefully i lose it for good reason tomorrow. I’ll be there nice and early for warmy.. WOOO GO LEAFS GOO!
October 23rd, 2009 at 6:33 pm
PS: BC has the best leaf fans, end of story, ull see how loud we are tomorrow

It would be a rotten homecoming present for Luke Schenn. But it could happen.
Schenn is well into his second year in the NHL, but he has yet to play in British Columbia, where he starred as a junior with the Kelowna Rockets.
That was an excerpt from an article of the Star’s and I just want to make a quick comment cause I’m super confused…
Schenn has always played here in Vancouver last year! I was at the game and if I remember we lost 5-2 and he got into a fight with O’Brien…and O’Brien sure had his way with him! Anyways just an observation. Go leafs go!
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:02 pm
@Bob is your uncle
Actually I went to the game last year and it was unreal. The whole ferry ride over from the island was packed with Leafs jerseys and Canucks fans didn’t really have much to say. When we got closer to G.M. place and the Shark Club, most of the Canucks fans were hiding their jerseys with their jackets. I couldn’t believe how many leafs fans there were. Then we lost 6-2 or something so that sucked pretty bad. Got tickets for tomorrows game and I just hope to God they win. I absolutely can’t stand Canucks fans. Wasn’t there an article recently where Canucks fans were listed as the worst fans in ALL of pro sports??
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:05 pm
@dannyt I am sure Vancouver played in Toronto last year and the leafs never did play in Vancouver. We lost at home on Feb 21 by 3-2
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Oops I am wrong again we last in Van on Nov 15. This start is costing me gray cells
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
@rustyynail
thanks! i thought i was going crazy for a second. i was sure i went to that game hehe!
@Rob
I heard of that article as well. They were totally in the top 10! The poll question for TEAM1040 for that day was ‘Are you annoying?’ it was pretty funny.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
How can you not remember that game, Sundins patented fake shot bakehand move to beat toskala and win the shootout for the nucks. Gotta say i smiled when we lost.
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Wasn’t that in Toronto? I didn’t think Sundin was back yet in November
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:32 pm
yea im talking about the one in toronto too, just remembering the finish
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:37 pm
Yup that was one for the long term memory
October 23rd, 2009 at 7:56 pm
@ MA
With regards to the Kimbo Slice article.
Kimbo should get special treatment. He earned it through youtube. People like him and want to see him fight win or lose. Thats the bottom line. RATINGS. Dana White would be a nut not to milk him for what he’s worth.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
rw said igs joey mac & reimer and thzat schenn is playing for sure on am640 about an hour ago
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:08 pm
Schenn is from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His parent’s house is about 10 blocks away from where I sit right now. He also did play in Vancouver last year. I’m not sure if his family where there or not . Although I know they were at the Oilers game in Edmonton and he had a great game. Sorry if anyone has already corrected this.
October 23rd, 2009 at 8:12 pm
Ksavz & Rob: Thanks for the info. Hope to hear you guys tomorrow night and everything turns out GREAT! Keep up the good work.
October 23rd, 2009 at 9:23 pm
@Bob is your uncle:
we get booed when the cannots are winning. there are soo many Leaf fans here it gets to be a great party at the games.
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:14 pm
@tuckerthomas
Kimbo can fight all he wants, and I think he’s a cool guy now, but he will never be a top guy. He’s has zero athleticism and only really has a punchers chance. That Nelson fight was just brutal to watch
October 23rd, 2009 at 11:34 pm
Just got back from the Attack and Spitfires game. If the Leafs number one ends up in the No1 hole overhall and the Bruins get Hall, I don’t care what anybody says, I think he will be better than Kessel and we lose that deal, 3 goals and an assist tonight with the Spits winning 8-4. Lets all just hope it doesn’t happen and we don’t have to think about or talk about what if’s. As for the Leaf Prospects in the game Ryan looked ok, he neither impressed or disappointed, he will adjust the the game after coming from college hockey and be fine,his positioning was good looks to have good fundamentals. Blacker on the other hand is either slow or just don’t have the hustle, which is why he probably lost his spot and essentially traded, I only seen him for the 1st and half 2nd, when he dropped the gloves with about 11 mins left in the 2nd and just smoked and I mean 10-12 shots to this other kids face while taking a couple,(give Fox from the Spits credit though he took some heavy duty blows) if you can find vid of it it was a beauty, only thing I think Blacker busted his hand if not its bruised bad he went to the dressing room after he served his 5 mins and then came back for the 3rd but only was on 1 shift. Needless I was impressed, the rest of his play,didn’t look the greatest but that maybe comes from first game with a new team.

Two things…if Schenn is sat what a waste last year was, what does he learn? The problem is not him or the rest of the team, being from, living in and WORKING for the Flames our saviour was suppossed to be Mr. keenan my team the Leafs should learn from old loyalties (Sutter to Keenan) HIRE THE BEST CANDIDATE not your old buddies.
Wilson accomplised Zip in SJ with a team far superior to our Leafs. Did dodgeball, 3 on 3, practises get them a cup?
Every Flames game I get critizided for my team..yes the Leafs for 40 yrs!!!But I still defend them but BB has to open his eyes and take off the blinders…
So sitting Schenn proves that keeping him up was a mistake..imagine last years WJC with him???Who is to blame? it It is the coach.Any other team with the Leafs $$$$would have fired and hired a new coach by now.Its a Canadian team I don’t care if it lokks bad for team USA to have thier coach fired !!Where does BB loyalties lie? To the Americans or the supporters and fans of the TML’s.

Blame the 19 year old … unreal …..

Sometimes I wonder if some fans aactually sit back and realize what they say….no wonder people make fun of Leafs fans so much, because half of them seem physically impared.
October 24th, 2009 at 10:15 am
physically impaired or mentally impaired>
October 24th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Amazing how it isn’t Wilson’s fault the leafs are winless this year! Wow Burke, great observations. I guess after the Leafs get hammered by Vancouver, Anaheim, Dallas and Buffalo it will still be the player’s fault.
Realistically the only game they have a chance of winning is in Montreal a week from today. So they could very well be 0-11-1 the next time they return home against Tampa. Kiss the playoffs goodbye Burke! Burke should be fired!
October 24th, 2009 at 11:42 am
Schenn will play. Jonas Siegel writes a nice blog about how RW and specifically Rob Zettler have supposedly lit a fire under his arse. They expect him to play a lot tougher, which is perhaps why he is paired with Exelby tonight.
Here is the article:

Stalberg Stajan Hagman

Prediction: Vancouver hammers the Leafs 5-1!
October 24th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Can we place a radio-controlled electrode in Exelby’s helmet? You know, to keep him from wandering.
October 24th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Leafs win 6-4.
October 24th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Finally Hagmans playing on the same line as Stalberg and Stajan. He was not playing effectively on the line with Poni and Grabo. Hopefully this means some more offensive production from the 2nd line.
