Looks cool Alec. Is the feature showing who’s online new?

Sick deal!
January 7th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Great feature!
It’s a much easier way to be able to bring topics up and find them without going through the whole comments in many posts. Although we can still have good discussions over here
I’ve already posted a couple of posts (walls of text) over there. It’s confusing to see your post go on top of the original post though, meaning it’s in a newest post to oldest post order, but it’s adaptable.
Again, great work!

I’ve recently heard that there is quite a bit of discontent within the Toronto dressing room (source: my sister is a personal trainer to a few of the Leaf’s girlfriends) between the players and the head coach. This latest rant from Ron Wilson, while deserved, will do little to calm the choppy waters or repair the growing rift.
Many players resent how Wilson conducts business with an iron fist and is distant in general, but then employs stunts like scrimmages with tennis balls in an attempt to lighten the mood. He is perceived as being fake. That his Mike Keenan impression is more like a forced act.
There is a sense that everyone is not on the same page, and it’s more like Wilson vs the team. Wilson blames the team for not executing the system he has in his head, but has been ineffective in communicating and instilling the message to the players.
When players give up on their coach it’s clearly the beginning of the end. One can either motivate through fear or inspiration, but rarely both at the same time. On a team you have to believe in each other, both the coaching staff and the players.
In my humble opinion, I’ve yet to see any type of organization being used by this year’s Leafs. We don’t have a set up for the powerplay. The penalty kill is atrocious. There’s zero commitment to team defence. And there’s no standard system being used that maximizes the type of players we have: so-so skill level, not overly physical, but above average skaters.
Unfortunately I don’t believe a coaching change is eminent with Wilson and Brian Burke being so linked through the U.S Olympic squad. But something needs to change behind the bench to get better results on the ice.
Does anyone know how many years Wilson has left on his contract?

How about Theodore, Della Rovere and a 1st round pick. Karl Alzner would be nice but I doubt that will happen.

Some ideas:
- Fantasy Hockey
- Prospect Talk (league wide)
- International hockey talk (KHL, Olympics, World Championships, etc)
Yes this veers a bit away from the Leafs, but these are pretty big topics in terms of hockey. Food for thought.

Another pair of ideas, now that I think about it :
- Number related chatter (similar to what I did removing the 1st 8 games. Just stats on players and such)
- General discussions (Non-hockey, non-sports. Just general chit chat relating to life and well, whatever.)

So today RW tears apart Phil Kessel, says he doesn’t like the media watching his practises, LOL, Why would this be? Because they are watching the leagues worst Penalty kill? Or the Leagues worst Coach?, No , That must be Kessel’s fault. Because Ricard Wallin is playing 1st Line Centre for Kessel? also Kessel’s fault. Because no-body seems to give a rats ass what Ronnie has to say in the Dressing Room?, Also Kessel’s fault. Is it also Kessel’s fault that this team hasn’t won dick shit since 1967? It is time management take the brunt of the blame. It took Chicago a lifetime for Ownership to finaly die, and build a team. So before we go trading everyone out again, lets start at the top, Right Ronnie ! Cause even Phil Kessel isn’t responsible for the whole team of AHL players Mr. Burke and Ronnie have touted.

I agree there… but who on the Capitals is attainable, and worth it?
Semin, OV, Backstrom are wayyyy too expensive for our assets, and Laich is their leader. Fehr and Fleish are just riping the WSH offense…

Steckel could be a playmaker for Kessel and has a the offensive power of Stajan, but could be better is we can get another sniper for the 1st/2nd line…….especially when he’s got a 60%+ on faceoff.
Carlson and Della Rovera would clear cap space as EL contracts and stand out prospects.
Theodore is purely salary dump.

@ voodoo_band08:
Wow buddy you don’t watch Capitals hockey Steckel is a fourth line center, he will never be more than that and shouldn’t which is why he was resigned for a a lovely rate of 1mil a season. He would be great as a final piece of the puzzle but has no more offensive ability than Wallin.

If Washington is one of the only players in the Kabs sweepstakes and there is truth to these rumblings, then Della Rovere, Carlson and a 1st would be a good trade. But I am hoping somebody else joins the party and throws us something a little more juicy. But I have no idea who would be interested at this point, although speculating is always fun. And Theodore could only be taken back if we move Tosklol
January 7th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
theodore and toskala are both in the last year of there contracts dude
January 7th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
I think Theodore coming here in a package would only happen if the Leafs are able to move Toskala elsewhere at the same time. Theodore is in the last year of his deal so he would probably walk at the end of the season. As for the prospects coming over, Della Rovre and Carlson would be great (Carlson would be our top defensive prospect) but I think Toronto would want a offensive roster player coming back and not sure Caps player that would be. Hopefully a package like that will cause other teams to ‘up’ their offers for Kaberle.
.
As for the Wilson topic, he will not be moved this season, regardless. I too have noticed the team tuning him out but Burke will not can him, at least not this season. I guess Burke would consider a coaching change early next season if Leafs come out of the gate badly agsin. However, consider what coaching options are available. It’s not like Dallas Eakins is an option based on how badly the Marlies have played this year. And who else? Andy Murray? John Stevens? Denis Savard? Craig McTavish??

Andy Murray would be perfect for the team we have right now, but Wilson will probably be better in the long run. I would prefer Tortorella or Babcock over pretty much all others though…

It’s unfortunate but we will be stuck with Wilson until there is another capable alternative. It will be a tough second half because that top five pick is going to be tough to take. So sick of things not working out on this club.
January 8th, 2010 at 4:02 am
I hope we keep Kaberle. Look at the numbers he is putting up without firepower up front. Look at the other top point producing d-men in the league right now. They all have a star-studded cast. Green, Keith, Boyle, Campbell, Pronger. Even Enstrom, Robidas and Doughty have better forwards to play with than Kaberle does. Imagine how many more points Kaberle would put up if we had players up front that could actually dominate. I think he could be a point-per-game player in this league if surrounded by the right players.

Is there going to be a whining section in the new forums? This could be limited to comments relating to how everything each and every Leaf player/coach/GM does is insanely stupid.
Also, a forum dedicated to all the NHL10 GMs with fantasy trade scenarios with little or no regard for salary cap, motivations of other GMs, or reality in general.
January 8th, 2010 at 10:08 am
I don’t think we will see RW go anywhere for at least another year. If Burke were to fire him and bring in his own new guy, then Burke becomes accountable. Right now Wilson seems to take most the heat. Burke has essentially given up three first rounders in the Kessel deal. A top five this year and likely a top five next year, and a second rounder this year that is just outside the first round. Wow, do you think we could have used that? By the 2011/12 season if the Leafs haven’t completely turned things around and I doubt that they will have then Burke will be gassed. Look for Wilson to be fired about a year before that happens. That works out to be about a year from now.
The other key moves that this team has to make is addition by subtraction. There are alot of players on this team right now that just do not have what it takes to be competitive. John Mitchell has to be dropped. Primeau, Mayers, Stempniak, Exelby, Toskala and Wallin should not be resigned. Stajan and Ponikarovski should only be signed at very frugle pricing. Maybe Toronto does better getting some picks for these two.
If that course is to be averted there will have to be a few things that happen over the next year that alter the course of this team.
1) They will have to find a middle to top ranked goaltender, someone with a save percentage in the .920 zone or better. Gustavsson could be that guy and could reach that level in short order but it will likely take at least a couple of years.
2) Kadri will have to have to be a top candidate for the Calder next year.
3) Kessel will have to have a great year next year and score 40+.
4) Right now the Leafs have a pool of young prospects knocking on the door. Two or three of Stalberg, Gunnarson, Hanson, Paradis, and Bozak will have to grow into players who contribute significantly to a winning team in short order. There was a spark of hope in training camp this year. That spark will have to be reignited and maintained. It is asking alot of this group but what else do we have?
5) The Leafs will have to hang on to the assets they have. Ian White is still underrated and probably should be captain of this team. Nic Kulemin is an asset, whether he plays a third line role or elevates his production as a top 6 type player. Grabovski has really improved his play in his own zone and he could be a second or third line centre. He is an asset that should be kept. Of course Kessel as already mentioned is an asset that will be kept. Schenn has not really had an inspiring year but he should rebound strongly. He will likely adjust his training this offseason and have a bounce back year next year.
6) Adding players that are significant additions through free agency or additions made in partner with salary dumps may be able to add a significant player here or there. But in all honesty over the course of this off season and next it seems as though very few options are available. The only player on the possibility list for this off season is Kovulchuk. If he gets to July 1st, can the Leafs even make space for him, and will he come here? If there were any chance Burke better get the job done if he hopes to hang around. While the chances of landing Kovulchuk are clearly unlikely right now, perhaps a usable player could be added by taking on salary.
7) Burke will have to turn Kaberle into a usable player. The best case scenario is landing a solid prospect who is NHL ready.
So then to start the 2011/12 season it is hard to really know what the roster will look like, but given the lack of movement in NHL these days it will be up to a group like Kessel, Kadri, Grabovski, Hagman, Kulemin, Stalberg, Hanson, Bozak, Orr, and a player from the Kaberle trade, and a free agent or two to run the offense. On D we would have White, Beauchemin, Schenn, Gunnarsson, Komisarek, and Finger.
In net we have Gustavsson and likely a free agent or a developing prospect like Reimer.
Does a team like this compete with the top teams in the league? Hard to say. A power forward or two with leadership would be a nice addition. If they don’t compete well a new Gm will come in part way through 2011/12 and once again the emphasis will be on drafting well.

@ B Leaf,
Well, I don’t know if you’re assessment is correct, but it’s along the exact same lines that I’m thinking (and presumably alot of us). Nice summary.
