Brian Burke’s youngest son, Brendan Burke, has passed away due to injuries suffered from a car crash in Indiana earlier today. From everyone here at MLHS, our thoughts and prayers are with Burke’s family. This truly puts hockey into perspective in accordance to life.
More from the Palladium-Item in Indiana.
Heavy accumulations of snowfall on Friday rendered area roads treacherous and claimed the lives of two people, injuring others and sparking a string of slideoffs and fender benders.
Brendan Burke, 21, Canton, Mass., and Mark A. Reedy, 18, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., died at the scene of a two-vehicle accident at U.S. 35 north of Economy. The accident was reported at 2:50 p.m.
Investigators said Burke was driving eastbound on U.S. 35 in a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee when, according to witnesses, the vehicle slid sideways into an oncoming 1997 Ford Truck driven by 24-year-old Michael Moreland of Lynn. Moreland was not hurt.
Ninety minutes later, a two-vehicle collision left 20-year-old Kenneth Burns of Richmond in critical condition with internal injuries at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
State police said Burns was driving a 1991 Honda Civic south on U.S. 27 near Pleasant Plain Road when he lost control of the vehicle on the ice- and snow-covered roadway. His Honda rotated counterclockwise into the northbound lane and was struck in the passenger door by a 2000 Freightliner driven by Thomas Rauch, 46, Fort Wayne, Ind.
Authorities responded to more than 115 calls for service in Wayne County. The Indiana State Police reported that they responded to more than 25 accidents, mostly slideoffs, on Interstate 70 in Henry County between mile markers 134 and 123. The accidents caused traffic to stall for hours.
“I won’t say it’s abnormal, but it’s been extremely busy,” Wayne County Chief Deputy Jeff Cappa.

As the father of two young boys i couldn’t imagine what Brian and his family are going through right now. I lost my cousin aged 22 back in 1997 and it still hurts me to this day.
What a horrific tragedy for the Burke family. My thoughts and prayers are with him at this horrible time.

WOW! I’m at a complete loss for words. I’m still shocked to hear of this tragedy this morning. As a gay male and a very BIG hockey fan, it’s really sad to lose such a brave icon both in the world of sports and they queer community.
To the Burke family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was pissed after that meltdown last night and didn’t see this story until today, it really puts the whole thing in perspective. My thoughts go out to the Burke family.

I too came on here to see what others had to say about the end of the game and then read this… I could not believe it, the feeling of losing the game was gone. And I did not know what to write. Now that I am awake I wish to express my sincere sorrow for their loss of a Son/Brother/Nephew/Cousin/Teammate/Coach
Does anyone recall if Ron is his godson or is he the godson to one of the other children.

I send my condolences out to Mr. Brian Burke and his family. Such a tragic loss.
February 6th, 2010 at 9:42 am
I know this might not be proper, simply because I haven’t yet lost anyone close to me, nor am I old enough to have had children or anything of the sort, but I give my condolances and sympathies to Brian Burke and his family. May he rest in peace.

(Don’t you guys go out and dare say that because I’m french I am a habs fan, cause that is as far from the actual case.)

A phone call no parent ever wants to receive, devestating news. All the hope and promise of youth should never be taken that early. My thoughts and condolences to the Burke family.

How would it not be proper for you to give your condolances. Just because you have not felt the loss of a close person in your life or don’t have a child. Everyone can simpathize with the family, from yourself to myself.
Seven years ago we lost my G/F’s (wife now) Grandfather right in front of us. He went into the hospital for some breathing problems said they were going to keep him there for observation but he should be home in a few days with a portable oxygen machine. We went all 3 nights to visit. ON the last night the whole family managed to be there and he ordered pizza for all of us and all the nusres on the floor. We all ate and talked with him for a few hours. Then all of a sudden he put his mask back on and then whispered something to his oldest daughter (she does not even know what he said) and then lights started flahing and buzzers were going off. Some of the family went down stairs for a smoke. One of the nurses said something about his breathing another checked a machine and then they said his lungs were failing. The other nurse said THESE ARE HIS LAST BREATHS. I took off running downstairs (5 floors) and out the emergancy doors there they were standing smoking. I told them that the nurse said his lungs are failing and these are his last breaths. and took off running back upstairs. myself followed by 2 others made it to the room in time. To watched him look around the room at everyone there, gasp for air. His youngest daughter was one of the 2 that made it in time. the room was packed no place to move and she stood there right infront of me I saw him look at her and then… that was it. A truely unbelievable experience
A week later we were out of the country and my mother was taken by the cancer she had. I few home the next day. Everyone said my father and brothers were doing well and strong. The 5 hr fly home and the 3 hr drive were Hell for me. but pulling into our driveway, family standing outside and someone opening the door to say I was home and then seeing My father and little brother in a race for me was when it hit home. My little brother (10 years old) jumping into my arms and my father hugging us like he was never going to let go was a truely unbelievable feeling.
this all happend 2 weeks after my 20th birthday and like someone else said I was moved by both but 2 things will break even the strongest of men… the death of his mother and the death of his children. And now having a 16 month old I could not even imagine the pain BB is feeling.

Parents should not have to bury their kids. From what I saw in November, Brendan is a smart courageous young man that Brian and Kerry can be very proud of, which I am sure they are.
I am terribly saddened by this loss and I give my deepest condolences to the Burke family.
This really put things into perspective and is a harsh reminder of how insignificant losing a game of hockey or trade rumors really are.
All my best BB.

My condolences to Brian Burke and family as they deal with this deep personal tragedy. As we mature in life we come to realize that losing a child is the worst event we may ever have to deal with. To be left here to try and come to terms with the sad truth that our child never had the opportunity to experience the richness of life we have. Brian Burke has strived to reach some pretty lofty goals in his life, including the resurrection of our Leafs, back to where they belong. He dares to dream, and this loss of his youngest son must be devastating. My sympathies, Mr Burke.

So proud of the story he made earlier in the year. What a great kid. When I watched the TSN interview from yesterday morning, you could tell something was wrong with Burke. He looked different, and now I see why. Like TML_FAN said, I feel dumbfounded and cant believe it. To be honest I look up to Burke alot and I feel although I never reall met him before, hes closer to me then a stranger….sad sad day

What absolutely terrible news. I’m in total shock and disbelief. Brenden was a strong willed trailblazer and provided an example that any father would be proud of. To all the families affected by this horrible tragedy, my deepest sympathies.

Boy, I think it’s pretty remarkable how we can put our differences, and debates and arguments aside, and come together to pay respect, and give our condolences to someone we greatly admires’ family. We are like a Leafs family on this site, if you think about it, once again Rest In Peace Brendan Burke

Very sad. My condolences to the whole Burke family. I’ve been fortunate enough not to deal with a loss of my family, I cant imagine what the family is going through right now.

My deepest sympathies for the Burke family at this difficult time. I sit up late at night here in Sweden, watch every game, and I’ve watched in awe at the immense power of the maple leafs GM. A man anyone would be proud to know and be standing along side. I am deeply saddened at the grief this good man is feeling and his family at this darkest of times. I, as I am sure every maple leaf and true hockey fan, wish you and your family all the strength in the world. All maple leaf fans are morning, our father figure is grieving and weve lost a brother.
God bless the Burke family.

Mr. Burke, please accept my families deepest condolences on the loss of your son. My heart goes out to you and your family at this time.

There’s no words to describe how profound I feel hearing this news. I have had a lot of loss in my life. Nothing I’ve felt could ever compare to the look on my parents face as my brother was laid to rest.
No parent should ever have to bury a child, and now Brian Burke and Brendan’s mother have a weight they’ll carry the rest of his life.
If Brian ever does read this site, or if any of you go through the same thing – take solace, I’ve watched my parents since that time and time and grieving does heal wounds, if not fully.
