The Maple Leafs have signed prospect Philippe Paradis, a 2009 1st round pick (27th) who as you may recall was acquired earlier this season from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for 2006 1st round pick Jiri Tlusty (13th).
Paradis’ Junior team, the Shawinigan Cataractes, were recently eliminated from the QMJHL playoffs. The Leafs elected to get Paradis signed immediately following his team’s elimination so he can be sent to the AHL Toronto Marlies to gain some professional-level experience.
Only 19 years of age, the 6’2″ 195-pound Paradis is a budding power forward who possesses a booming slapshot. A centre by trade, Paradis’ physical game also translates favorably to the wing. He likely projects as a 3rd-line NHLer capable of providing physical play (unofficially, he registered 18 hits in 6 playoff games with Shawinigan) and some secondary offense. A good comparison might be a harder-hitting version of Christian Hanson.

“Big, strapping winger is strong and rangy on his feet … moves impressively propelled by a healthy, productive stride backed by deceptive accelleration speed and a very good top gear … plays a punishing physical brand some nights, throwing his sturdy, well-built frame around with authority … shows good poise and decision-making in the defensive end … able to absorb hits and make plays … can get too casual at times though … needs to develop a better sense for pressure and learn to protect the puck better … won the ‘Hardest Shot’ competition at the CHL Top Prospects Game with a clocking of 95.7 mph … a good prospect with a solid all-around toolset … just needs to find better consistency and cultivate a special weapon that will make him stand out.
