It seems to be theme of the 2014-15 Maple Leafs season -- just when you think we're at rock bottom, it finds a way to get worse. https://twitter.com/swhyno/status/574609521768792066 https://twitter.com/swhyno/status/574610498727116801 Sunday Links: Jonas Siegel: Interim Leafs coach wading through rough term (TSN.ca) “There was no effort,” he said painfully afterward. “You never want your team to come into a game without the highest possible effort and approach to the game. There are no real excuses for it so I’m not going to make any. That’s unacceptable for me. I’m not happy about it.” I Chris Johnston: Maple Leafs’ loss met with apathy, acceptance (Sportsnet.ca) What might have been most notable...

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning

1480
Toronto struggled early, falling behind 7-4 in chances and 2-0 on the scoreboard. They figured things out in the second period, as they were able to out-chance the Lightning, and while it was an open period with plenty of chances both ways, Toronto scored the only goal. That meant they were down only one, and had the chance to chase in the third. Unfortunately, the third period was terrible from Toronto, surrendering 11 of the first 14 chances and falling behind 4-1. While the Leafs did manage to direct some chances at the Tampa net, by the time they got...

MLHS' Elliot Saccucci and Torontosportsmedia join Michael Langlois to discuss a wild past couple of days in Leafland. The state of the team and the current media environment in Toronto will be discussed among other topics. Watch above on YouTube, or listen below on SoundCloud or iTunes. The Leafs had a great start to this game but Florida had a strong response, finishing the first period even in chances, and getting a goal in the last twenty seconds of the period. In the second, Toronto again started well, and a power-play goal got them back on even terms. However, Florida got a power-play goal of their own, and despite having the better of the chances after two periods, the Leafs went into the third trailing. That's when things got strange. Florida had already pulled Luongo, who left the rink and went to the hospital for examination, when...
Dion Phaneuf Panthers

The deadline past yesterday, but somehow the distractions seem just as bad if not worse today, with Phil Kessel and Kyle Dubas speaking out against media treatment of Dion Phaneuf, followed by the statement launched by Lupul and Phaneuf against the broadcast station that is a property of the corporation that part-owns the team. Never a dull moment in Leafland. The Leafs will have a few new bodies in the lineup, with waiver claim Tim Erixon and deadline pickups Eric Brewer and Joakim Lindstrom available to make their Leaf debuts. It will be interesting to see if the deadline passing and a few leaders on...

The brutal incident with the unscreened tweet on TSN yesterday (we ask that you don't discuss the contents of it in the comments) may have been the straw that broke the camel's back as far as the Leafs and their media relations this season are concerned. Honest technical mistake or egregious error in judgment by a TSN staffer, it seems to have been the boiling point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45HO7tc7AUg https://twitter.com/jlupul/status/572815868566097920 https://twitter.com/longleysunsport/status/572812640000589825 The reaction from the media has been as predictable as the seasons. Within minutes of the Kessel and Dubas stuff hitting the social media rounds, suddenly the Leafs personnel in question are portrayed as ducking accountability for their horrible play and playing the...

Dave Nonis got his work done early, opting to do next to nothing on deadline day. Outside of cashing in his pending-UFA trade chips, the Clarkson deal is the big bang of the deadline season, as the core remains untouched for now. The net result of the past few weeks: Media address expected shortly. Dave Nonis Post-Deadline Media Address https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dybfGM9hIk

The Leafs have found a place to offload pending UFA Olli Jokinen, sending him to St. Louis for a conditional sixth round draft choice. The pick they grab here essentially factors back into the original Mike Santorelli and Cody Franson deal, making the return Brendan Leipsic, a 1st round pick and a sixth round draft pick fetched in this trade. Any asset gained here at all is gravy. https://twitter.com/Real_ESPNLeBrun/status/572480543847260160 Joakim Lindstrom is a 31-year-old depth center with 6 points in 34 games. He's an expiring contract takeback to make the dollars line up. So ends the storied Olli Jokinen era in Toronto. Jokinen clearly didn't want to...

Former Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins joined Bob Mackowycz on TSN Radio, touching on the Leafs rebuild, the market's treatment of Phaneuf, and the futures of Rielly, Gardiner and Kadri. Have we lost sight of how good Phaneuf could be? I think it happens. It’s an easy thing to happen. When you get into a negative environment and there’s lots of losses, it’s very easy to pile on individuals. I’ve really kept an eye on Toronto since I've been gone. It’s an organization close to my heart because I was here for so long. I think a lot of the criticism of Dion and some of the...

Roman Polak recently gave an interview to Czech paper iDnes on the state of the Leafs. Translation below courtesy of MLHS member 'drummond.' Pressure in Toronto? Nah, in St. Louis, it was another story, says Polak. Roman Polak is a tough defenseman, who is not afraid to play hardball. Recently he showed similar courage with his statement criticizing the performance of the team. To give you a better perspective, this is not something which would be common in the capital of hockey. "We needed to start calling things what they actually are," he said in an interview to iDNES.cz. The interview took place...

Toronto had a tough turn around, with the second game of a back-to-back coming against Washington. They had a terrible start, giving up a goal in the first minute of the game to fall behind. They actually had a solid period after that, as they were the better team in the second half of the frame, and ended up even with the Capitals in chances. Since Washington generated three of those chances on one great shift, most of the period was dominated by the Leafs. The second period was similar, as Toronto had a solid period in chances, and other...

The Leafs play one more game before the final deadline flurry. We'll wait and see if anyone is scratched tonight, but of those remaining who can be classified as trade bait there really isn't a surething to be moved by tomorrow. The Capitals should be the far hungrier team after a 3-0 loss to the lowly Hurricanes on Friday; they're now losers of three straight. They're also rested while the Leafs had to fly out after their loss to the Habs last night. The Leafs have lost 9 of their last 10 at the Verizon Centre. Ovechkin is looking to become the first player to...

The Leafs have decided to take a flyer on 24-year-old defenceman Tim Erixon, claiming him off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. Erixon's a former 2009 first round pick of the Calgary Flames who hasn't found a stable spot in the League yet. He is an RFA at season's end. Tim Erixon Scouting Report A strong, aggressive rearguard .. all-around type .. moves well in all directions, propelled by a long, powerful stride.. handles pressure well ... initiates physical contact and knows how to apply his large, sturdy frame .. proactive rushing the puck, relying on his skating and reach advantage .. not a...

Montreal had a strong start, getting six of the first nine chances, and a pair of goals in the first thirteen minutes (the second of which Bernier would like back). Toronto was able to get even in chances for the period after a good late push, but didn't get a goal out of it. The second period was also even in chances, with Montreal again having a hot start before the Leafs pulled things back late in the frame. There wasn't a real push back from Toronto in the third, as an early Montreal goal extended the lead to three,...

Pete Deboer on TSN Drive: View on Clarkson and the trade: Clarkson is a great kid. Actually, at the time, I really thought he as going to help the Leafs. It was case of Murphy’s Law; everything that could go wrong did go wrong… big contract, huge expectations, people throwing out Clarkson like Wendel Clark in that vein. He tried to do everything right; look at that 10-game suspension, that’s exactly what every coach wants his team to do, stick up for their best players, and he ends up with 10-game suspension to start the season. Trying to do the right...

Bob McKenzie on TSN Drive: On trading Horton for Clarkson and not Semin or Richards: I couldn’t honestly tell you that I know for a fact there was conversation between . What I can suggest that is, of those three you mentioned – Clarkson, Semin, Richards - Semin wasn’t a fit in the eyes of Columbus. They were not looking for a high-end, underachieving goal-scoring winger. I don’t think they were eager to bring in another center in Richards. I think Clarkson fit the profile of what they were looking for: A guy to go up and down the wing and...
David Clarkson

Pat Morris joined Leafs Lunch to discuss his client David Clarkson's trade to Columbus.  His involvement in getting the deal done: I actually spoke to Dave Nonis about another thought that we had on David, probably a week ago. I started with Nonis on that dialogue that had some legs, then died. Then, Dave said, “I might be working on something else, would you have interest in listening to that?” I said, “sure, bring it to me when it gets serious.” It got serious the day before yesterday, we had some contact Wednesday, and then all day yesterday we worked through...
