The Toronto Marlies goaltender led the American Hockey League in save percentage and goals against average in a breakout season, establishing himself as a full blown prospect to make the Leafs in 2012-13 in a tandem with incumbent James Reimer. The former Cornell standout has bounced from his initial signing from the ECHL Reading Royals to a standout as a Marlie, similar to the ascension of Reimer. Now, he’s out to steal his job. The 26-year old is a tall, athletic goaltender who utilizes an economical butterfly style to eliminate the bottom of the net. His strength moving post to post is impressive, however he’s lacking in some speed elements and can become reactionary when losing sight of the puck or bothered by traffic in the crease. The Alberta native had to live with an ill-timed play to come out of the goal in Game 3 of the Calder Cup Finals, only to watch the puck bounce off a stanchion into a gaping wide net in overtime, effectively putting the choke hold on the series for the Norfolk Admirals at 3-0. His glove hand is quick and his puck skills, although around average, have shown some improvement. He’s likely penciled in as the back up for whoever is leading the Leafs crease, although he could still see himself in the minors with the Marlies if the Leafs make a significant upgrade in the crease without trading Reimer in the process.
