’09-10 Player Reviews: Luke Schenn

by on June 23, 2010- 45 Comments

We’ve partnered up with Pension Plan Puppets to bring to you a Player Review series, where we will be evaluating and grading the 2009-10 season for every Leaf who featured in a significant number of games for the Blue and White last season, with an eye towards 2010-11. Next up we feature Luke Schenn, profiled by Skinny Fish:

"The Summary: People will point to the Calder worthy performance of Tyler Myers, or the Norris worthy performance of Drew Doughty and then say that Schenn had a terrible season; a sophomore slump if you will. Those people are dead wrong. Doughty is among the elite of the elite defensemen in the game, and Tyler Myers benefited from being on a Sabres team with terrible defense while playing in front of the game's best goal in Ryan Miller. Schenn, on the other hand, played on a team with proven veteran defensemen like Beauchemin, Phaneuf, and Kaberle. Another thing to note is that Schenn was never touted as a point producing blue liner; his game is out of a shut down style of play against tough competition. Myers led his team with nearly 3 minutes of PP time a game; Schenn averaged 14 seconds.

Johnny Misley is the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for Hockey Canada, and plays a key role in enhancing hockey in Canada across various levels: from the grassroots programmes all the way up to the National teams. Speculation Running Amok

by on November 23, 2009- 101 Comments

It's been widely reported the past few days that Leafs' GM Brian Burke is working on at least two trades in an effort to provide a much-needed shakeup to the team.

Sifting through the vast amounts of information, misinformation, and fanboy longing, two teams keep getting repeated over and over ... enough to raise at least one speculative eyebrow.

A Tour Through The Rumour Mill

by on October 23, 2009- 169 Comments

There's nothing like an 0-6-1 start to push the rumour mill into full swing.     The following is a quick rundown of some of the talk working its way through the grapevine.

As always, this is only talk -- as in, players rumoured to be under consideration, not deals that are on the brink of consummation.  Take it for what it is.

Points System: Could Schenn Have Been a Duck?

by on March 26, 2009- 419 Comments

With Files from Gil Brown

Brian Burke doesn't take credit for the Maple Leafs drafting Luke Schenn 5th overall in 2008, but he's sure glad they did.  Under different circumstances, which we'll get into over a series of posts, Burke's Ducks would have been in the mix for the Saskatoon native at the 2008 draft.

Fortune shined on the blue and white allowing them to trade up to 5th overall pick.  There was an associated cost from their original seventh spot, but the end result is a potential future Maple Leafs captain of the Scott Stevens mold.

Unbelievable as it seems; perhaps, even laughable, Schenn, could have been wearing Ducks colors.

The story doesn't begin in Anaheim, however.  It starts in Edmonton.

Cliff Notes

>>>DISCUSS IN THE FORUMS

*Sunday Morning Update: Nothing ground-breaking here, but Fletcher told me via e-mail this morning that there were no new developments in Friday's meeting between himself, Mats Sundin and agent J.P Barry. "Mats is going to take his time." It's expected that Fletcher clarified his position by reaffirming that Sundin was welcome back, with a reported $7 million, 1 year deal still on the table. Alex Tran will be checking in with his first blog sometime today. [more…]
