by on October 6, 2010- 400 Comments

Not a bad start for the Maple Leafs' 2010 draft class... It was announced on Monday that forward prospects Greg McKegg, the Leafs' 3rd round pick 62nd overall, and Brad Ross, the Leafs' 2nd round pick 43rd overall, were named OHL and WHL Players of the Week respectively for the week of September 27th to October 3rd. Not to be forgotten is forward Josh Nicholls, the team's 7th round pick 182nd overall who is off to a career best start for the Saskatoon Blades. [more…]

Tucker-ed Out

by on October 1, 2010- 35 Comments

Darcy Tucker has officially called it a career. "After spending the whole summer anticipating I would play, it got to a point where I knew it was time."

"I just knew, during workouts I didn't have that same feeling," Tucker told TSN, "and I needed to be fair with my family."

- If the TSN reports that Frolov could sign a 1 year deal comparable to that of Afinogenov last season ($800,000) are true, then why weren't the Maple Leafs heavily involved in discussions with Frolov's agent? He's a big guy who can win some pucks, plays a well-rounded game and would fit perfectly in the top line left wing role at a bargain basement price. Remember a few weeks ago when I talked about a deteriorating market? This potential signing may just be the beginning.

- The Toronto Sun reports that the Maple Leafs' Rookie tournament will take place at the John Labatt Centre in London from September 11th-14th this year.

- The Hockey News makes the case for the Maple Leafs as a surprise playoff team this coming season.

- On to the FanPosts. Andrew Edwards (AKA Crazyaces) proposes a solution for these ridiculous long-term contracts, while Michael Cuttell continues his preseason synopsis by evaluating the Leafs' current forward group. [more…]

Dion’s Day

by on June 18, 2010- 132 Comments

It's not every day the Maple Leafs name a new captain. In fact, it's not every decade. Sundin was named in 1997, 13 years prior to the Leafs appointment of Phaneuf. And with the announcement being made in front of a room of roughly 100 media personnel, the message was relayed to the world using every different angle imaginable.

Instead of weighing the pros and cons, balancing the collective good choices of Burke and Wilson against the bad, MLHS is going to bring you into the event. Thousands of writers have provided their opinion but little time has been spent enabling the reader to form their own. So please, if you will, grab your notepad and follow us past the security and the media media check-in, and into the press conference that will see Dion Phaneuf named the 18th captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Quotes from the Battlefield

by on September 4, 2009- 8 Comments

Former NHLPA Executive Director Paul Kelly finally broke his silence yesterday following his firing early Monday morning. In a vicious 24 hours that also witnessed Glenn Healy's resignation, Kelly was forced to defend himself against allegations he misused his office having reputedly been caught reading a confidential transcript from a players meeting.

For his part, Kelly admitted reading the document to the Executive Board meeting that preceded his departure, saying he felt “duty bound” after union members, concerned that the NHLPA constitution was being violated, actively sought his participation.

Hawks in Trouble… Again

This article is cross-posted from my site: www.checkingfrombehind.com. I thought I'd share it with you to explain the circumstances on why the NHL feels it is not a "legal" contract.

Almost a month after the alleged "errors" in their qualifyings of RFA players, the Chicago Blackhawks are faced with another possible problem, only this time they won't be losing players, they'll be losing draft picks and up to a $5M fine by the NHL. It seems their contract for UFC Marian Hossa, a significantly front-loaded 12 year deal worth $62.8M, is not in compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). How is that you ask?

Jiri Tlusty Named AHL PLAYER OF THE MONTH – Quiet Deadline

by on March 3, 2009- 28 Comments

Chatter ... non existent.
Rumors ... rampant speculation, but nothing really.
Movement ... absolutely dismal amount of transactions (if you don't count waiver placement)

Just, eerily quiet ...

And I have a theory as to why. But first, some good news.

Yes or Nonis? The Conclusion

by on December 6, 2008- 15 Comments

Just under a week ago, Burke requested and received permission to speak with the Ducks’ front office advisor Dave Nonis. Wednesday, the Leafs formally presented Nonis with an offer to join the franchise with the same position he held under Brian in Vancouver. Today, Nonis accepted the deal and has joined the Maple Leafs front office.
