Kadri could force tough decisions up front

by on September 30, 2010- 282 Comments

Perhaps the best part about Nazem Kadri's two-goal, three-point performance last night against the Ottawa Senators is that he can start the season with the Toronto Marlies with his head held high. Certainly, Leafs fans, management and Kadri alike will hope he can relay last night's performance on the wing into another strong showing against Detroit on Friday and make a case for a place in the big Leafs' top six for the October 7th date with the Habs. But should Kadri's play return to the form he exhibited in previous preseason showings - by no means terrible, but not as impressive as it will take - he can take solace and confidence in last night's achievements and start off on the right foot at the Ricoh. Top Seven Reasons To Watch The Rest of The Leafs Season

by on March 12, 2010- 21 Comments

First and foremost, let me apologize for my absence.  As some of you may know, I am in school completing my Sports Marketing degree, and things have gotten really hectic in crunch time.  I am also organizing a golf tournament for this summer in Strathroy, Ontario.  Anyone who would like to golf can get in touch with me anytime.

You know, another season of hockey is winding down.  At least, it is in Toronto with the Maple Leafs.  While the sun has been shining and treating us to above average weather the past week or so, it does come at a price.

It has become all to accustomed.  As soon as the sun begins to melt the snow, and the grey, dull sky is replaced by a ray of sunlight, you know that the Maple Leafs aren’t long for this world.  That the season is just about wrapped up, and lockers will soon be cleaned.

Phil Kessel Needs Your Help

by on December 4, 2009- 402 Comments

Phil Kessel is a legitimate star in the city of Toronto.  Per sporting tradition, he now needs a nickname which is catchy, instantly recognizable, and also describes him as a player.

In the course of chatting with a source earlier in the week, the topic of Phil Kessel's impact in Toronto naturally arose.  At which point the source mentioned, "it's not every day a team can acquire a bonafide star, but the Leafs have found one in Phlair."

Wait, what? Phlair?

"Yeah," the source replied, somewhat sheepishly. "I don't know where [the players] come up with these nicknames, but that's what they're calling him."

Leafs/Blue Jackets: Post-Game

by on December 3, 2009- 68 Comments

A Kessel fight, a Blake goal (or two), and a Kulemin shortie.  It was a night of rarities as the Leafs took it to Columbus with a decisive 6-3 victory. Toronto beat the Blue Jackets to loose pucks all night long, forced turnovers with their speed, and miraculously capitalized on their chances.

Points System: Revealing Results

by on April 2, 2009- 12 Comments

With Files from Gil Brown

The current point system is most equitable for playoff races in January and individual franchise marketing, beginning as early as midseason.

Part of the logic behind Detroit Red Wing's GM Ken Holland's proposal, shot down in GM meetings in Naples, Florida in March, to change the season ending tie-breaking measures from Wins, to Regulation Wins is incentive for teams to get the job done in 60-minutes.

It's about motivation, from puck drop in October through to April. But the current point system has greater connotations for marketing games, ticket sales and shaping the playoff race, the biggest issues for owners.

Post-Game: Leafs stick it to Sens, Spezza

by on January 4, 2009- 15 Comments

I don't care where in the tanking/playoff spectrum you stand, beating the Ottawa Senators is always sweet. Especially in a game riddled with physicality and controversy, against a rival considered at season's dawn a contender vastly more talented than the re-building Maple Leafs.

Battle of Ontario – Prospect Edition. Also: FLA-PIT Report

>>>DISCUSS IN THE FORUMS

The Battle of Ontario’s prospects ended in triumph for the Senators in an action-packed, end-to-end tilt featuring 12 goals split 7-5.

The night started brightly for the Maple Leafs following Phil Oreskovic’s bout with Geoff Waugh three seconds after puck drop that was seemingly a spill-over of bad blood from last AHL season and/or an arrangement made in warm up. Off an early face-off in the Sens’ zone, Darryl Boyce drew the puck back to 5th overall pick Luke Schenn who fanned on his point-shot only [more…]
