MLHS Exclusive: Nazem Kadri on Offseason & NHL Expectations

by on September 7, 2010- 135 Comments

Last Wednesday (September 1st), Toronto's MasterCard Centre for Excellence, the Maple Leafs' own practice facility, played host to the 2010 NHLPA Rookie Symposium in association with trading card leaders Upper Deck and Panini America. MLHS' own Gus Katsaros was in attendance, and has kindly provided audio from his own conversation, as well as portions of a larger media scrum Q&A, with Leafs' top prospect Nazem Kadri.

Ponikarovsky Heading to L.A.

by on July 27, 2010- 277 Comments

A former Leaf is about to sign with Los Angeles, as Alexei Ponikarovsky has agreed to join the Kings (although a deal has not yet been signed).  This ends some speculation that "Poni" would have to take his games overseas, as this summers UFA market has seen a lot of viable NHL players still without a job.  Ponikarovsky was shipped to the Penguins by Toronto at this year's trade deadline, bringing back Luca Caputi in what was a very fair exchange of players.  However, Pittsburgh was expecting the Ukrainian to contribute at the level that saw him pour out 61 points for the Leafs in 2008-2009.  With a disappointing 9 points down the stretch for the recent champs and an awful showing in the playoffs, teams weren't exactly lining up to sign the 30-year old.

McKegg ready to make most of chance with Leafs

by on June 29, 2010- 288 Comments

For Greg McKegg, nothing has necessarily come easy in his hockey career.  A slow start to his rookie campaign in Erie, followed by a knee injury which threatened the start of his season this past year, McKegg began the year as a winger for the Erie Otters that ISS ranked in the 90's.

It was something that McKegg couldn't not think about, no matter how much he tried.

"It's something you try not to think about too much really, but you can't help but look.  It was disappointing to see that for sure, but I think it gives you that edge to work harder and show people that you deserve to be higher up on the list."

And that is exactly what he did.

Being described by some in the hockey circles as a perennial underdog, McKegg did the only thing he knew how to do.  Work hard.

Good to be back! It's been a little while since I've had the opportunity to post anything.

The following are some random thoughts I've had of late, including Luke Schenn's banishment to the press box, the Leafs' recent winning ways, the status of the trade front, and more.

Feeling Sluggish? Grab Some Horton’s!

by on October 18, 2009- 575 Comments

Seven games into the season might still be too early to panic, but it's becoming quite clear that we're inching quickly towards the button. The Sun is reporting that Brian Burke has beeen making calls around the league in search for another goal scoring forward. In the same article, the Sun also mentions that Florida has begun preliminary talks in exploring trade possibilities for young power forward Nathan Horton, who has thus far struggled out of the gate. Is there a possible fit here? [more…]

Where Do You Go From Here?

by on October 13, 2009- 297 Comments

Five games in, no wins, and few positives within the play to indicate a turnaround is coming soon.

Something has to be done to shake up this roster.   Some sort of move needs to be made, that much is clear.

The question is, what?

The Value of a 1st Round Pick (Or Two)

by on September 13, 2009- 325 Comments

By now, I'm sure many of you have seen ESPN's report of a significant offer by the Maple Leafs for Phil Kessel: two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick. The general reflex reaction that we've been conditioned to by the Toronto media the last few seasons is to avoid moving 1st round selections by any means necessary. The thought of moving two such commodities is beyond horrifying. I've seen the name Taylor Hall used as the backbone of many an argument over the last few days, often associated with the "chance" of landing said player. If we're gonna turn this into a game of chance, let's at least get all the cards on the table. [more…]

Random Thoughts: Minor Marlie Moves

by on February 25, 2009- 55 Comments

With all the focus on the trade deadline the past few weeks, some minor moves by the Toronto Maple Leafs organization -- namely with the AHL Marlies -- have gone relatively unnoticed.

Mark Bell is no longer a Leaf, Boyd Devereaux is back in the NHL, and Bates Battaglia remains with the Marlies.

Schenn to Stay!

by on October 27, 2008- 471 Comments

Sorry folks, been really busy over the past week or so. Let's talk some breaking news:

"The Maple Leafs will announce as early as this afternoon that rookie defenceman Luke Schenn will be staying in Toronto and will not be going back to the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. Teams can hold on to rookies for nine games before their contract as junior-aged players kick in. The 18-year-old Schenn has played well enough to stick with the big team.
