12 Burning Questions: Will Mike Komisarek Have A Bounce Back Season?

by on August 19, 2010- 233 Comments

In part three of his 12 burning questions series, Derek Harmsworth looks at whether Mike Komisarek can rebound from a tumultuous first season in Blue and White.

It's no secret that Brian Burke likes his hockey teams to be, for the most part, big, nasty, and in your face physical.  He also has a penchant for looking for players from his home country of the United States, but as he said, he would sign players who were from the moon if they could play the game. Maple Leafs Sign Marcel Mueller

by on July 14, 2010- 253 Comments

The Maple Leafs announced on Wednesday afternoon that they had come to terms on a two year entry-level contract with 22 year old free agent forward Marcel Mueller. Mueller is a 6'4 212 lb power forward who has spent the past 4 seasons playing against men in the top German league. He had a terrific '09-'10 breakout campaign that saw him record 56 points in 53 games played, good for 13th overall in league scoring.

Although it has Mueller has been rumored to be a target of NHL teams for a couple of seasons now, the recent transfer agreement reached by the DEL and NHL in late June has allowed Marcel to be officially pursued by NHL clubs. [more…]

Burke’s Focus Now Shifts to Tweaking Roster

by on April 26, 2010- 95 Comments

While the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing and continue to provide us with some fantastic moments of triumph, the fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs are now forced to once again shift their focus to off ice activities.

And so too has Leafs brass.

Despite his team sitting on the sidelines, Leafs GM Brian Burke made quick work of two signing he was keying in on, signing goaltenders Jonas Gustavsson and newcomer Jussi Rynnas to contracts.  Continuing with the in-house theme, Burke will now certainly turn his attention to Nikolai Kulemin, if he hasn't done so already.

And while we are seemingly quite far away this point, it won't be long before the draft and subsequent free agency period rolls around.

Draft Watch ’09: Part Two – The Fab Five

by on June 11, 2009- 41 Comments

With just a little over two weeks until the draft, it's time to turn our attention towards some of the favourites to go off the board first. Last year, a small group of about six players (Stamkos, Doughty, Bogosian, Pietrangelo, Schenn and Filatov) managed to distinguish themselves from the rest of the class, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to pay a hefty price to move up. As we inch closer to the twenty-sixth, a trend is beginning to emerge that has the same five players at the top of every team's draft board. Let's meet the candidates. [more…]

Season in Review, Player-by-Player

by on April 16, 2009- 26 Comments

Now that the 2008-09 regular season has officially ended, it's time to take a look back over the roster to assess each of the Maple Leafs' players.

Note that I'm only including players who finished the season with at least one game played for the Maple Leafs, and am excluding those traded away during the course of the season.

Statistics for those who were acquired mid-season reflect games played as members of the Maple Leafs only.

Playing The Odds

by on February 23, 2009- 67 Comments

As the Trade Deadline approaches, speculation will continue to grow over which Maple Leaf players may be moving on to new NHL destinations.

The following is my own personal estimation of the likelihood of regular roster players actually getting dealt, based upon contract status, playoff/stretch drive impact potential, comments from players/coaches/management, and of course the metaphorical smoke & fire (the amount of repetition in the rumour mills).   To quote the great Chazz Palminteri, "a rumour's not a rumour that doesn't die".
