Report: Bozak To Join Top Line

by on January 12, 2010- 599 Comments

Per the Toronto Star, it appears as though Tyler Bozak may be the latest player to get a shot at centring the Maple Leafs' top line alongside Phil Kessel and Nik Kulemin, beginning tonight against Carolina.   With Kessel having recorded only 1 goal and 1 assist in his last 12 games, the Leafs are desperately hoping this change may be the tonic required to get their star winger back on track.

Update: confirmed by am640's Jonas Siegel.

This Season Winning Means Nothing

by on November 26, 2009- 243 Comments

By Gus Katsaros
The Leafs aren’t as bad as a four win first quarter. They were a playoff bubble team prior to the season, and the postseason wasn’t necessarily the goal, as was becoming competitive enough to stay in the run. They aren’t a bottom five NHL club, and unlikely to finish in a lottery position.

This season continues the transition like last season into shaping Toronto into a respectable organization, from management, down. That hasn’t changed with the off season moves, aside from some specific performances.

'Spirit is Everything' is a fitting slogan .. because winning this season, means nothing.

Kessel Needs Supporting Cast

by on November 20, 2009- 12 Comments

Phil Kessel, in his short tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, has displayed an offensive acumen unparalleled by his teammates. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason the Leafs embody mediocrity.

Myth vs. Reality

A dreadful 3-11-5 start for the Maple Leafs has everyone asking the same two questions. What the heck happened? And what the heck is the solution?

Leafs and Avalanche Preview

by on October 13, 2009- 592 Comments

Bad goaltending is now blamed on an injury. The Leafs have called up rookie James Riemer who will be sitting on the bench tonight as Joey MacDonald gets the nod. Vesa Toskala has apparently suffered an undisclosed injury after last night's 7-2 loss (my bet is a fan clubbed him Nancy Kerrigan style) and is now out. Toronto's top two goaltenders (arguably) are now sidelined. Gustavsson is expected to return sometime next week.

Keeping Tabs on the Kids

by on October 12, 2009- 158 Comments

With very little good happening at the NHL level, it's time to see how the kids are doing elsewhere. The Marlies dropped a 5-3 decision this afternoon against Rockford, falling to 2-1 on the young season. Jiri Tlusty scored a pair of goals, bringing his totals up to 3 goals and 4 points in 3 games played. [more…]

Kinks in the System: Who Gets the Part

by on September 29, 2009- 229 Comments

The pre-season Buds may have exuded that truculent belligerence so deeply worn into the modern Toronto fans lexicon, but they rarely looked convincing. Either letting leads slip or being forced to fight back from poor starts, the Leafs managed to scrap their way to a strong 6-3 record. But as the 2008 Detroit Lions will attest to, a good pre-season rarely translates into a successful regular season.

Subsequently, while it is easy to buy into the hype of September hockey after the barren months of Summer, the Leafs will do well to learn from the more lackadaisical moments of their 6-3 warm up before they start lacing up against the cream of the leagues “A” squads. After all, rallying performances aside, the pre-season has done little but affirm that the Leafs own one of the strongest depth charts in the league, not necessarily the strongest team.

Leafs/Wings Post-Game: Gustavsson the Great?

by on September 26, 2009- 248 Comments

The Leafs improved their preaseason win total to six tonight at the ACC.  These are the final chances for some of the young hopefuls, and they are not going to go away easily.  Strong nights from Jonas Gustavsson and Viktor Stalberg were the headlines of this matchup.  Even the defense corps has a rookie strutting his stuff as Ron Wilson deemed Carl Gunnarsson their "best defenseman tonight".

Leafs-Sabres Post Game: Comeback Kids Fall Short

Well, the comeback kids couldn't do it tonight. Unlike last night against Pittsburgh, The Leafs couldn't overcome a slow start tonight and fell 3-2 to the Buffalo Sabres.
