NHL ShieldThings may be relatively quiet in Leafs Nation these days, but that doesn't mean there has been a lack of excitement elsewhere in the NHL.

As such, here are a few quick takes on some of the headlines dominating the NHL landscape these days (including the Phoenix Coyotes situation, the Patrice Cormier charges, and Willie Mitchell's controversial comments),  as well as a quick glance at the nearly-completed 2nd round of the NHL playoffs.

-The Leafs have to compensate for their lack of roster depth and the fact that Chiarelli is reticent to trade within the division by offering up a substantial package.
-As reported there are variations on the deal-including two #1s plus. Names have also been bandied about - White, Poni, Tlusty, Stalberg, Kulemin.
-There is not an overwhelming consensus within the organization that this is a good move - Nonis is notorious for holding onto picks and believes in building through the draft.
-Burke believes he can replenish the picks, to a certain extent, through trade

The Top 5 Stories That Will Carry Over Into Next Season

There is a lot going on  around the league these days.    Rumours about Kaberle and potential deals abound, a Kessel signing is no longer imminent, Heatley is still a Senator, and the NHL remains hot over the Hossa contract.  Oh, and did I mention the league still has a bounty on the head of Jim Balsillie?

All of these stories have been playing out for months now, and none appear headed toward a resolution prior to the start of the new season.    It is safe to assume that despite the vast quantity of reporting devoted to these stories throughout the offseason, each will continue to dominate the headlines on days where the box scores do not.
