Random Thoughts: Ten Quick Hits

Random Thoughts: Ten Quick Hits

by on October 11, 2010- 210 Comments

Two games in, and the Maple Leafs are 2-0 for the first time in 11 years. While some might be tempted to find meaning within that number, the truth is that in terms of history the number is rather meaningless.

With still 80 games left on the docket, and the Leafs about to embark on their first road trip of the season, expectations must be tempered despite the hot start (and the rare sight of a 4th overall placement on the ESPN Power Rankings).

In other words, a 7-0-1 start (to counter last season's 0-7-1) is probably just a little too much to ask. As if I had to tell you that. Then again, this IS Leafs Nation; somewhere, someone surely needed the reminder.

Follow the jump for a few first-week impressions and musings.

12 Burning Questions: Will The Maple Leafs Finally Return To The Playoffs?

by on August 28, 2010- 73 Comments

In the final part of his 12 Burning Questions series, Derek Harmsworth takes a look at the Maple Leafs chances of getting back to postseason hockey this year.

May 4th, 2004.

Both teams, tired and weary from what had already been a long, arduous road, a journey that had left both teams battered and bruised.  The teams went back and forth, showing tremendous heart and determination, showing what it takes to win hockey games at this time of year.

Up the ice they went, rewarded with a good scoring chance, but stopped by a goaltender who was up to the task.  Then down the ice the other way, another good chance, this time for the other team.  The goalie in this net, equally up to the task of making the save and preserving life, for at least another moment.

Quickly, and in a whirlwind of emotion, it was over. [more…]

Phaneuf Named 18th Captain in Leafs History

Phaneuf Named 18th Captain in Leafs History

by on June 14, 2010- 205 Comments

At an afternoon press conference at Real Sports Bar & Grill, the Toronto Maple Leafs made official the worst kept secret in the NHL by naming Dion Phaneuf the 18th captain in the club's long and storied history (22nd if you count the St.Pats and the Arenas).

The Maple Leafs also unveiled the team's new jersey design.  The new jerseys return the horizontal white stripes to the bottom of the sweater, in homage to past tradition.  For more on the new designs, please see Alec's earlier post regarding the jerseys.

Good to be back! It's been a little while since I've had the opportunity to post anything.

The following are some random thoughts I've had of late, including Luke Schenn's banishment to the press box, the Leafs' recent winning ways, the status of the trade front, and more.

Less Than 2% Chance Of Making Playoffs?

by on November 17, 2009- 101 Comments

According to Ken Roberts and www.sportsclubstats.com, the Maple Leafs have a 1.7% chance of making the playoffs at the moment...So, you're telling me there's a chance?

All jokes aside, I knew the chances were slim, but less than 2%? Is that really accurate? Apparently, Roberts' site calculates a team's chances of making the playoffs using a complicated algorithm much too complex to fully understand. But quickly, it takes into account many factors when calculating a team's chances, including their current record, remaining schedule and goal differential. [more…]

Leafs Lose Tough One In Dallas

by on October 28, 2009- 328 Comments

The Maple Leafs deserved better in tonight's 4-3 overtime loss to the Dallas Stars. It was frustrating to see another strong effort come up short. The Leafs really need to start pulling out some of these close games if they want to get back into contention.

They can't afford to lose those games "that they deserved to win," because it doesn't seem like they are good enough to win the games "they should have lost." Take a look at the Montreal Canadiens; 5 of the their 6 wins this have come in overtime or shootout. Instead of being 6-6-0, the Habs could easily be 1-6-5. However, they've found ways to pull out those close games. I hate to say it, but it's a sign of a better team. [more…]

Lazy Leafs – Reckless Beginnings

by on March 26, 2009- 379 Comments

It comes as no surprise anymore that the Maple Leafs are capable of these late season success stories; the one’s where they basically go on a ridiculous wins to loss ratio and play damn well near 0.700 hockey. And while this can make for exciting hockey, it leaves many shaking their heads at their televisions, laughing at the sheer dominance the club proved over an elite team.

Schism

by on January 9, 2009- 11 Comments

In October 2008, a reporter set the Barilkosphere into a tizzy with a certain writing. The intention was simple, a deliberately cruel finger pointing at Leafs Nation.

The backlash was tremendous, and it inspired Pension Plan Puppets to trigger a massive response to the piece. It shows the unifying force behind the internet, allowing fans the opportunity to voice dissent.
