Based on what we have been told, we would be looking at a notably different roster if the Toronto Maple Leafs' plan A this summer had come to fruition. Dave Bolland would still be a Leaf, making $4.75M/year for five years, according to Darren Dreger. https://twitter.com/Hope_Smoke/status/484395392248053760 Josh Gorges would be a Leaf in exchange for Cody Franson, according to Dreger as well. https://twitter.com/Hope_Smoke/status/484396310939045889 Perhaps they would have signed Dan Boyle instead of Stephane Robidas, too, who Pierre Lebrun noted the Leafs were very serious about for days. https://twitter.com/Real_ESPNLeBrun/status/481848384995614720 From the outside, it appears the Leafs desired a defense of: Gorges - Phaneuf Gardiner - Boyle/Robidas Rielly - Polak Dave Bolland...

James Reimer and the Toronto Maple Leafs will go to arbitration to determine what the embattled Leafs goalie is worth. Hint: he's getting a raise. In my last article, I discussed the upcoming Club-elected salary arbitration of Ryan O’Reilly and the Colorado Avalanche. The flipside of Club-elected salary arbitration is Player-elected salary arbitration, which procedurally is the mirror image of Club-elected arbitration with the Player driving the process and being given the opportunity to present his case first rather than the Club. Yesterday, CBC’s Elliotte Friedman broke the story on Twitter that James Reimer was among the first players to file...

There’s nothing like draft weekend to prime the hockey world for free agency. It was an up and down weekend for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but hopefully it is a draft class we can look back on with a smile one day. It certainly started with a bang for Leafs fans. Here are some notes and thoughts on the weekend that was: William Nylander When a team drafts outside of the top few selections, they’re mining through a pool of players with at least one perceived flaw or deficiency, otherwise these players would have been at the top of the order. For the Leafs,...

According to Steve Simmons, it looks like some combination of Steve Spott, Gord Dineen and Derek King is going to be among the Leafs' upcoming assistant coach hires -- or perhaps more accurately, internal promotions -- with an announcement expected next week. It would not be the most outwardly hope-inspiring of moves if there's no fresh voice/outside perspective being brought in to challenge Randy Carlyle's way of thinking. There is also no denying the success of the Marlies the past few seasons. Steve Spott seemed aware of the obvious value in rolling four lines last year, and is ostensibly off to...

The Maple Leafs have brought back Trevor Smith on a one-year contract (financial terms currently unavailable). This is a no-brainer for the Leafs, as Smith is quality depth and the captain of the Marlies. With the Leafs, Trevor Smith played at a 32 point pace averaging less than 10 and a half minutes of ice time per game last season, but he collected all of those points playing up the lineup. In the three games when both Nazem Kadri was suspended and Tyler Bozak was hurt in mid November, he collected five of his 9 points in 28 games playing some...

The summer is starting to crawl into the dog days of hockey season, but that doesn't mean there isn’t any value left on the free agent market for teams to consider. Late last summer, the Maple Leafs invited Mason Raymond out to training camp without a contract. He ended up signing for a paltry $1,000,000 (by NHL standards) and producing 19 goals and 45 points. With that in mind, here are a few possible value buys among the players still without a job. *Note: I'm not claiming every player listed is a fit for the Leafs specifically. This is just a...

Today, Steve Simmons had a few interesting Leafs tidbits in his Sunday column. “Don’t expect anything sexy when the Leafs announce their coaching staff shortly. In fact don’t be surprised if the Leafs two new assistant coaches aren’t internal promotions.” If I was Steve Spott, I would rather be head coach of the Marlies than assistant coach of the Leafs under Carlyle, but I’m not Steve Spott. That said, Gord Dineen and Derek King have been rumoured to be in the assistant coach mix from the beginning. It wouldn’t be surprising if they were promoted. The Marlies have run an excellent...
