With tonight’s preseason game just a few hours away, there appears to be a shift of mood in the locker room for the duration of the preseason. It looks as if the days are numbered not only for those who won’t be joining the regular crop this year, but also for a few regulars.
Prior to hopping on a plane yesterday to St. Louis, Ron Wilson spoke to the media to discuss the abundance of forwards and defense the Leafs currently have on the payroll.
“We’ve got a lot of people who can play (on defense), therefore, any decisions we make, (GM) Cliff (Fletcher) has assets. And if we need to use guys to get other parts for our team, those are decisions that we’ll be talking about, whether it’s on the plane trip or early next week before we get ready to play Detroit (in the regular season opener on Oct. 9).”
As for Luke Schenn’s current role on the club, Wilson is certainly giving him all the opportunities necessary to make the club, but does not want to rush any rash decisions.
“You don’t have to make all your decisions in the pre-season. You don’t want to be premature in your judgments,” Wilson said. “That’s why we try to play Luke against the better people on the other teams. But we also understand that those players aren’t playing at the same intensity they will be playing when the regular season starts.”
The Leafs ready are to ice the youth squad tonight as minor injuries have plagued a few leafs thus far. Those who didn’t make the trip tonight include Kubina – knee, Kulemin – knee, Stajan – knee, Blake – knee, Nick Antropov, Alex Ponikarovsky, Tomas Kaberle, Carlo Colaiacovo, and Vesa Toskala.
Though Joseph was given the nod for tonight’s affair (as per TSN) Wilson has changed his mind and decided to go with Justin Pogge and will dress Kyle Rogers for his second appearance up front, and introduce Richard Petiot for his first preseason game on defense.
