As if injuries to Carl Gunnarsson, Joffrey Lupul, Jake Gardiner and now James Reimer weren’t enough, the Leafs just announced Matt Frattin is expected to be out for at least a week after undergoing a minor procedure on his previously surgically repaired knee, although James Mirtle speculated he might be out a little longer than that.

Frattin is currently second on the team in goals scored with 7 and tied for third in points with JVR with 10 points. He’s formed a bit of a dynamic duo with Nazem Kadri as both take the body, go to the dirty areas, and complement each other well between Kadri’s setup skills and Frattin’s finishing ability.

Mike Brown is expected back soon and David Steckel has been a healthy scratch, but this could give the Leafs an opportunity to call-up Joe Colborne and give him another look at the NHL level should they so choose. He has 16 points in his last 15 games with the Marlies.

Otherwise, it sounds as if McClement might move up on the Kadri-MacArthur line and Steckel will probably fill the roster hole in the 4C. That’s just speculation and we’ll have to see what Carlyle has in mind.

The Leafs also called up Jussi Rynnas to replace the injured James Reimer. With Reimer only expected to be out for a week or so, it doesn’t make sense yet for the Leafs to bring in a veteran and create a logjam of goalies in the organization a week from now.

Tt’s pretty safe to say that Scrivens will get all the starts for now. He could always play terribly and force Carlyle’s hand, but the glass half full approach says that this is a chance for Scrivens to really start proving himself and maybe even push Reimer for starts.

In other news, if you feel like procrastinating today, Josh Rimer tweeted out that the Leafs have indeed inquired about Ryan O’Reilly. He’s been the hot topic lately, and would obviously come in to be the expected first line center of the team, but the main question on everyone’s mind is whether or not it would require Jake Gardiner to be going back the other way, and if that’s worth it.

Discuss.
