  • Staff: Toronto Maple Leafs add Dale Derkatch to amateur scouting staff (MLHS)
Derkatch has been the director of player personnel for the Prince Albert Raiders since 2009-10. Most notable among the Raiders’ NHL draftees since Derkatch took over their scouting and drafting: Josh Morrissey, a first round selection in the WHL bantam draft in 2010, and Leon Draisatl, a first round pick in the 2012 CHL Import Draft.

“I really trust that they have a plan and they are very motivated at this point,” Brown said. “They did what they thought was best for me and I agreed with it. I had a pretty good year and it was actually kind of nice to stay down there the whole year and focus on the season with the Marlies. I think I’m heading in the right direction, so hopefully at [training] camp I can take the next step.”

“Doug Gilmour” was Marner’s answer when asked why he wore No. 93 as a high-scoring junior with the London Knights, an impressive career that resulted in his hometown NHL team selecting him fourth overall in June. “And my brother’s [birth year] is ’93. He’s been a big part of my life. And watching Doug Gilmour growing up, rooting for the Leafs.”

Connor Brown made a huge jump this year, from #14 to #8. Doing so would be impressive, but doing so with a whole bunch of new kids in town is even more impressive.  Making his AHL debut Brown racked up 21 goals and 40 assists for 61 points in 76 regular season games, and added another 4 points (1G, 3A) in the Marlies first round playoff loss to Grand Rapids.

Daniel Sprong made a move and got a shot off that was stopped by the goalie during the recent Islanders practice. New London resident Dion Phaneuf, as he has the past couple of years, skated with the team as it prepares for the upcoming Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season and he readies himself for training camp.

“The goal is to surprise people,” said Marner. “I just want to go to training camp with my mind open. Just try the best I can. I think I have a good chance to make an impact.
“I just want to leave an impression if I get sent back to London.”

The total number of Russians league-wide tailed off incrementally through the lockout of 2004-05, a period that saw many find comfortable jobs in other leagues around Europe. Understandably, the following NHL season featured a significant dip in Russian players, the total dropping below 50 for the first time since 1992-93.
