The Maple Leafs hire London Knights scout Tony Martino, new scouting hire Dale Derkatch describes his role with the Leafs, Phil pulls our heartstrings one last time, and more in the links.

Thursday Links:

  • Alec Brownscombe: Toronto Maple Leafs hire Tony Martino as amateur scout (MLHS)
Martino has worked as the US-area scout under the Hunters for the Knights since 2010, and serves as the Hockey Director at Lake Forest college in Illinois, where he was also the assistant coach/goalie coach last season (Martino was a goalie in his playing days).

  • Staff: Toronto Maple Leafs add Dale Derkatch to amateur scouting staff (MLHS)
He has been the director of player personnel for the Prince Albert Raiders since 2009-10. Most notable among the Raiders’ NHL draftees since Derkatch took over their scouting and drafting: Josh Morrissey, a first round selection in the WHL bantam draft in 2010, and Leon Draisatl, a first round pick in the 2012 CHL Import Draft. Brendan Guhle, a third overall selection in the 2012 WHL bantam draft, was drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Sabres in 2015.

  • Brett Smith: Leafs of change (Prince Albert Daily Herald)
In his new role with the Leafs, Derkatch made the decision with his family to take the job because it keeps him predominately in the Eastern Conference of the WHL. His primary territory will be the WHL’s Eastern Conference, but he will have some crossover with the Leafs’ Western Conference scout.

  • Chris Lund: Kadri looking to thrive under new coaching staff (MapleLeafs.com)
“A lot of explosive movement, a lot of agility, a lot of footwork. Just continuously working on my speed and obviously the strength,” said Kadri. “I think my lower body is a whole different ballgame. I’ve become a lot stronger in my lower body, which is what you need to keep up with the best players.”

  • ClrkAitken: Maple Leafs’ Top 25 Under 25: #7 Peter Holland (PPP)

To date in his career, Peter Holland’s proven he can at least be a facsimile of Bozak (also keep in mind that those HERO charts compare Bozak as a 27-29 year old and Holland as a 22-24 year old). Peter Holland’s 24 years old, has four years of pro hockey experience and just put up 25 points in 62 games of limited offensive opportunities on a pretty terrible team.
