The biggest hockey matchup in the world has rarely had less on the line in terms of competitive importance. Draft implications could be counted as significant, but they add little to the overall fan satisfaction as far this game is concerned.

A long and frustrating season has come to an end, but each and every time this happens Leafs Nation feels a big loss. To this writer, a win against the eternal rival would be a fitting end to an already weird season. You never expect a truck to climb back after falling from a cliff.

QUOTES TO NOTE:

“We struggled at home for a while, no one was happy about it. We have not been playing the way that we want to play,” said Phaneuf, who has just three points in his last 15 games. “But we wanted to finish our year off, our last game at home in front of our fans, the way we did.”

“We have to get ready to give 100% in our last game now. There’s nothing else to save it for,” goaltender Peter Budaj, who is expected to make his fourth consecutive start in place of injured Carey Price.

INJURIES:

The Leafs are missing Joffrey Lupul (separated shoulder), James Reimer (upper body), Nikolai Kulemin (broken finger), and Carl Gunnarsson (separated shoulder) while Jonas Gustavsson and Grabovski are both questionable with lower-body injuries.

Good to see Grabo retaining a sense of humor:

“Like filet mignon,” he joked. “I have fat skin.”

On the Habs side of the puck Carey Price (concussion) has been shut down for the remainder of the season while Yannick Weber (lower body), Brian Gionta (bicep surgery), Mathieu Darche (upper body), Travis Moen (upper body), Scott Gomez (concussion), and Raphael Diaz (lower body) are all on IR.

WHO TO WATCH:

Jake Gardiner joined D Carl Gunnarsson as our only blueliners to score in back-to-back games this year when he tied Thursday’s game in the third period.

Erik Cole has scored 34 goals this season and has 60 points on the year. He’s also a plus 10 for the season. The winger scored 3 goals and has 4 points in his last 3 games.

In relative numbers he’s not that far off. Nobody puts those numbers up today. In the year Gilmour finished eighth in scoring, he had 127 points. Kessel finishes seventh this year with 81-ish. In Gilmour’s year 21 guys had 100 points or more with 160 for Mario. Last I looked there was only Malkin that was over 100 this year. In Gilmour’s year 32 guys had 90 points. This year it’s five maybe?

I’m fine with keeping Kadri but his time is quickly running out much like Schenn, though I’d trade Schenn now and move on with other defensive depth that we’ve accumulated.

Trade Schenn and another prospect of MacA for a goalie or something.

does it honestly make a difference now though? i mean Crosby draft is the only draft i can see a real big advantage to picking first but in reality top 3-4 picks are for the most are really good as well. I mean look at Tavarez who was suppose to be far and away the best player but theyre were still some REALLY good players to come out after him. So honestly of all the things in the NHL that drive me nuts the draft pick selection is really low on the list.

Who’s going to say anything? Your point revolves around the idea that there’s some impartial person who is witnessing this process. And that there’s such a person who hasn’t signed a legal non-disclosure agreement as any of these agencies who work these events do. In principle, the non-disclosure is signed so that they are legally obligated not to leak the results in advance, but it works for anything they have knowledge of due to being part of the process. The financial stability of Phoenix has been fucking the NHL for three years. You can’t separate one team from the rest. These 30 teams are one collective business. They all know they might get jobbed from time to time, but are forced to accept it as the cost of doing business. At the end of the day, greater league revenue and financial stability is better for everyone.

Forget that, Bush got re-elected over Gore because of hanging chads on ballots. The presidency of the United States was manipulated by backroom dealing, but people are willing to believe that the NHL draft can’t be affected by such shenanigans because of its inherent integrity in the eyes of the fans?

Ok, even if its our most pressing need-and you’re right probably is-I still don’t want to give up the pick for the reasons I laid out. And honestly, read the post if you missed it. I loved Down Goes Brown before he started writing for the National Post. He’s still good, just not as Leafs-centric.
