From MLHS user DefenceWinsChampionships:

As some of you may already know, I got to see Morgan Rielly play last night in Regina. He scored Moose Jaw’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Pats. Here are some things I noticed throughout the night:

- Rielly started off slow, but got better as the game went on. It became more and more apparent, over time, that he was the star of the Warriors’ team. Late in the game, he tried to do more himself, apparently feeling some desperation, with his team trailing.

- His passes are hard and accurate, and can come unexpectedly. There was one play where he put a long pass between two Pats and sent a teammate into the offensive zone on a short breakaway. The player did not end up scoring, however.

- Leading up to his powerplay goal, Rielly made it blatantly evident that he wanted the puck. He tapped his stick on the ice until his teammate passed to him, then skated inward and fired a wrister from the top of the circle, beating the Pats’ goaltender. The calling for the puck is a sign of a high level of confidence, something that should aid him in his development.

- Late in the game, when he was playing his best, Rielly read a play, jumped up to the Pats’ blue line, and intercepted a pass, giving himself a breakaway from the blue line in. Unfortunately, his hard wrist shot missed the net. He was trying to pick a corner.

- Rielly actually looked fairly big out there, or at least tall. He isn’t a little “pipsqueak”, by any means. We shouldn’t have to worry too much about him getting thrown around, especially considering the fact that he still has time to grow before suiting up in a Leafs uni.

- He does the little things well. Things that you see from the good puck-movers in the NHL. For example, he was very successful at receiving the puck in his defensive zone under heavy forechecking pressure. He can make that little spin move near the hash marks that good NHL defenseman sometimes make to shake off fore-checkers. It’s hard to explain, but if you watch enough hockey, you should know what I’m talking about.

- He’s also very smart on the powerplay, and works well with his teammates. Often, in the NHL, you’ll see a dman take a pass from a guy on the half boards, take a couple steps inward to draw the nearest opposing defender towards himself, and then flip an almost behind-the-back backhand return pass to the forward on the wall. Rielly did this once, then got himself open right away. He got a pretty good shot off, as a result.

This is just an unorganized summary of things I noticed from Morgan Rielly last night. The goal and the breakaway pass should be in the highlights on the Pats/Warriors websites, if you want to see them. Overall, I was pretty impressed by the kid’s play. He’s a point-per-game player so far this season, if anyone is wondering. He may be for the whole year, because he is a noticeable threat on the ice, even as a defenseman.

There’s probably a more receptive audience toward Leaf hate than there is in being constructive about their situation. Hell, that’s probably the case in the GTA alone now, let alone across the country. I know so many anti-Leafs fans, some of whom were once fans of the Blue and White. It’s certainly not cool to be a Leafs fan right now. Will be even sweeter for us when this ship is turned around.

Yea, no doubt an issue.  It’s as much a media issue as a team issue.  How much do you hear about Scott Glennie?  Pretty much in the exact scenario as Kadri, but I bet the Texas Stars (or whoever) don’t have any issues controlling the attention he receives.

I think he’s a seventh overall pick who because he’s in toronto is treated by fans and followed by the media like he’s a first overall pick along the lines of a franchise changer like Crosby. I’m more or less in your camp because I never saw him play junior so I can only go by what I’ve seen with the Leafs.

Cam: There is no press coverage of the Stars. Texas Rangers and Jerry World. Leafs are the only game in town that matter, hence the microscope. as I’ve said earlier, Toronto itself is fair game for Western Canada, so its multiple wammies.

The one thing that taints the question of whether or not Kadri has been treated fairly is what I saw as a clear animus on the part of Wilson towards Kadri in his first training camp.  I can’t argue Cameron’s point that Wilson was’t an evil moron, but no one will ever convince me that that guy had a real piece of nastiness in him which was not exclusive to Kadri.

I’m watching the ranger now, looks like they have a new tennis like pitch locator for the playoffs.

Exactly.  It’s not even just about the team, it’s about a lot of other issues.  In the same way that talk radio stations cater to the philosophy of their perceived listener and newspapers to their perceived reader, I find that hockey broadcasts also present a slant based on what they think their audience wants to hear.  And since Toronto fans will watch regardless, it’s a no brainer for them to write the script with that slant.

I’m not sure Wilson was the ideal “rebuild coach.” I don’t think he seriously set us back from a player development standpoint though. In the case of Schenn, I think it had more to do with the system he was preaching than his personal treatment of him. On the flip side it worked for Gardiner and a few others.

Anything that makes viewing more interesting. (Wiski: Sad there is nothing that could possibly help the Jays. I may be a long way from home, but its Leafs and Jays, and a huge need for a depression lift).  :)

Alec: Don’t want to rehash stuff, but I believe it was RW’s system that hurt us. It was not the right system for the youngest team. It needed a lot of experience and hockey maturity to be played well, IMO.

It’s pretty hard to prove you’ve earned a spot in training camp and pre-season because the games have a mish mash of NHL and non-NHL types in the lineup.  The only way you will ever know is trial by fire playing with real quality top 6 players and not the Joey Crabb’s of the world.

Kadri has never been given that opportunity IMO.  That is the coach’s decision and if he makes the wrong call it’s his job on the line.  Wilson is gone and now we’ll see if Carlyle is ready to give Kadri a chance.  I don’t pretend to guarantee that Kadri is going to excel but we’ll never know until he’s at least given a chance.  What’s the risk – we’ll finish 15th in the East?

Fully agree. I made an analogy about it involving a teacher shortly after his firing. Wasn’t perfect but essentially conveyed the point: http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2012/03/09/was-ron-wilson-the-wrong-coach-at-the-wrong-time/

I think the one thing that became obvious over time was that Wilson did not communicate well with the players.  When Carlyle came along he seemed a lot more engaged and animated on the bench.

Everyone has to remember 2 things about Don Cherry; he’s a Leaf fan and he’s not an objective member of the media.

He, like all of us, will bitch and moan about the Leafs when things aren’t going right. The only difference is that he has a National pulpit to do it from.
