Update: Josh Leivo led his Sudbury Wolves over the Ottawa 67′ers with a hat trick Sunday afternoon, including two brilliant individual efforts. We’ll scour the web for some video and post the highlights. Great display of skill.

MLHS user “J” attended the Sudbury Wolves win over the Kingston Frotenacs last night and tracked Josh Leivo’s shifts on video as well as his game-tying goal (his fourth of the season).

From J: “Leivo did not disappoint as he finished the night with the game tying goal and was a constant force to reckoned with. He made quite a few nice passes that could have easily been goals had other players finished the play.

He played on the 2nd line 5-5. He was on the second powerplay unit as well as the 2nd penalty killing unit. Notable:there were quite a few (6) Frontenac powerplays and they failed to take advantage.

I was able to take a few pictures and I taped most of his shifts. Check out his hard work on the PK and goal at the end of the video:

Thanks for the cred guys. I will be attending most games involving Leafs prospects when they come through town and play the Fronts. I will try to keep you posted with more vid and pics. Also, once I sort out this yahoo account garbage, my name will be theTruculentTML, fyi.

    Thanks

    -Jeff

Leivo has a 2 goal game going right now, Sudbury Wolves slapping up Ottawa 67′s 4-2, end of the 2nd.

Appreciate the time and effort Jeff . Following the development of our young prospects is fast becoming a favourite pass time for me. I intend to try and keep a close eye on it even after the lockout is over

I’ve been following the Leafs since 1960 and its amazing how up until Burke arrived I couldn’t have named the the Marlies (or their predecessors) starting line, let alone junior players who may be four or five years away from getting their shot. (And I realize a chunk of the prospects who are on the brink right now are JFJ picks). I think it’s because Burke is the first to really install and organization-wide development system. I lived in St. Catharines when the Leafs AHL SAints were there and it seemed more like a dumping ground for old pros rather than any kind of training ground for young players..

Thank god for MLHS during this lockout. Coverage of the Marlies/prospects is great and the new site look is beautiful. Kudos

I agree about the new look. I’ve been a lurker for quite sometime and this is the sleekest design to date.

I was exactly the same way and I’ve been following the leafs since the early 60′s as well. The only time I ever followed the leafs minor league teams is when they used to play in my home province as the St. Johns baby Leafs. Even then it wasn’t a big thing as I mostly had to depend on TV or newspapers for info. Now with the internet and all the social media its so much easier and actually very very interesting.

Friggin old Ballard was too cheap to do anything with the minor leagues and it’s a hangover that lasted till Burke took over for sure. Kudo’s to Burke for finally setting up a truly professional organization for the first time since I can remember

For the MLHS guys, if you’re keeping track the new design is way quicker on my iPad. Before it was just a tad slow as the page was loading all the bells and whistles, the posts would be the last to appear and it sometimes it would take a while. Works great now.

The minor league teams were dumping grounds for mistakes for the most part. A few graduates did emerge, some very good ( Felix Potvin and Roger Neilson to name a couple) but most were forgettable.

The Saints were well received in St. Catharines but after about a year Ballard refused to stock an entire lineup with contracted players, so there were nights when management would have to bring in half a dozen players from Senior B leagues, or even industrial league teams, on one or two game contracts. One time they dressed 14 players. The team worked its way from a full house to 500 fans a game. Boudreau and Steve Thomas played on some of those teams.

Oh mannnnnnnnnn, I wish I could give you guys the video of Leivo’s hatrick, he just finished it off with a world class dangle and shot. If anyone can get video of his hat-trick from today, tomorrow somewhere on the internet please post, it was beautiful. He might have just won the game for the wolves, ohhh baby.

The Leafs probably should have had proper development systems in place but you have to remember up till the last lockout the Leafs had a greater ability than almost every other team to buy free agents.  They were hurt as much or more than any other team after the lockout because they previously didn’t have to rely on developing players. At least IMHO.

I think this kid can be a top6 power forward, his hands are so nice, he’s got size, speed, there’s not much more you can ask of him. What a game.

Hands are ridiculous. Top speed/skating stride aren’t ideal but he can cover ice in bursts. I’m a huge fan, I think he’s got NHL written all over him

There’s the nail in the coffin, great win for the Wolves, looked like they were going to lose the game for a second, great game for Leivo. I agree he’s still got to refine his game, and polish off some things, but all in all he’s got all the tools to be an NHL player like you said. His stride is a little choppy, but when he gets chugging he can get all over the place, I’m sure Barb Underhill can work that out.
