Lake Erie 4 vs. Marlies 0: Lowlights

Everything that went right for the Marlies yesterday went wrong today against the Lake Erie Monsters – they failed to convert on 11 powerplay opportunities and 40 shots for. The Marlies saw a more aggressive penalty kill from Lake Erie, and as Eakins suggested in his post game interview, the reaction from the powerplay units was to stray from the structure as opposed to stick to the game plan. Seems simplistic to begin and end with the powerplay in this brief game analysis (and the Marlies were far from error free defensively), but bad things are bound to happen when you spend a full period with the man advantage and fail to find the net. The hot goalie in the Lake Erie net didn’t do them any favours.

Game in Six after the jump.

remember though, Gards played almost a whole season in his rookie season in the NHL. ahl is different as most games are on the weekends giving a week to recoup……i cant see Gards missing any games while being healthy…..IMO

I have always had confidence in Dallas too.   I don’t think today was his best day though.  Someone said the team didn’t appear to be ready and I said I expected the team to make a statement in the 3rd period. Neither happened, and it’s usually the coaches job in both cases.   That said, I don’t want to get too worried after 1 loss.  Eakins took us to the finals last year so he can’t be all that bad.

That’s absolutely correct and is what I’m saying here actually. He’s never played a full season (NHL or AHL) before last year and with a short summer to boot, I can definitely see Dallas sitting him to avoid that scenario again. Will he sit as often as the lesser pairings, no and maybe he won’t sit at all. But I won’t be crying foul if he is rotated out occasionally. I get what djamon is saying in that this is a development league and the young guys should be playing as often as possible but this season is a different beast, expectations are high and we have a glut of players to get in and out the line-up. Also, if players like Gards and Holzer were in the NHL as they most likely would have been, players like Blacker would be in on a regular basis. Again, this season is a different beast altogether and it’ll be interesting to see how Eakins handles it moving forward.

Just a side note, and I’m sure its already been stated, but very nice to see Rielly had a 5 point night last night (5 assists), and is currently 3rd in scoring by defensemen.

Monsters played 3 in a row and back to back games is the definition of the AHL schedule. Not to suggest any one should be alarmed by a loss in the 2nd game of the season, lol.

It’s the way they lost. No aggression, no passion, not even any oushback. Scruvens was awful, and I am convinced 2 of our biggest players would curl-up in the fetal position sucking their thumb if you yelled at them.

You mean they didn’t learn anything from yesterday’s 2nd period?  :)

Didn’t think Scrivens was awful besides that botched paddle clearance he attempted.

Not sure if you followed the team much last season or in the playoffs but there’s plenty of character on this team.

I guess we’ll disagree on Scrivens. With regards to last year, I did watch alot, and went to several playoff games, and that is where my concern lies. They had passion and character, which should have been supplemented with a couple of this years additions, but none was obvious today.

I agree with you on the pushback part.   I thought Eakins would have had them fired up for the 3rd.  It didn’t appear that the win was important enough.  I expect the coach to have them ready for Fridays game.

It’s the second game of the year and it was a back to back game, their legs were probably tired

I hope you’re right, but I have a nagging fueeling we’re going to see a steady diet of some of the guys Eakins keeps talking about jammed down our throat. Sorta like Lombo with the Leafs last year. Biggest culprit is Ashton, he’s terrible, but they keep putting him out there, even on the PP.

I hope that once Eakins gives them all a shot or two that he makes them earn there ice time.  I can see sitting guys for the purpose of resting them but other than that we need or best players to carry the team.  The coach is likely still assessing how the players will play on certain lines and in certain situations.

As long as the best players are the ones we see on the Leafs in 3 years. It makes no sense playing the veterans just because they play better defense in Eakins’ eyes.

This is a development team…nothing else.

are you being serious? are you guys really staying up all night to scrutinize a fricken AHL game lol. Most people wouldn’t of even known the AHL season had started yet if the Leafs regular season had been started nevermind be whining about a loss in there second game, they are 1-1 yesterday everyone thought they were a lock for the calder, there is nothing to worry about. Even if the team is shit which they aren’t the only thing that matters in the AHL is how our prospects develop and Gardiner , Kadri and Colbourne have looked great IMO albeit I didn’t see much from tonights game.

I agree to an extent, but guys like Hamilton Ziggomanis have carried this team a long way in the past and the young prospects can learn a lot from them.  I know that a few on here have talked about Hamilton taking Browns position, but it may never happen.

I agree with the concept of the veterans being leaders and “teaching” the kids how to react in certain situations. I think it’s been a real weakness of the Leafs recently…they fold way too easy.

But the goals shouldn’t be to win necessarily, but to graduate players to the big club. Any way possible.

Dalas Eakins wants a job in the NHL, he will win at all costs… He isn’t going to get to the next level by giving undeserving kids icetime.

Yeah, the question is how much to play them and how much to let the kids pave their own  way.   I have to work in the morning so it’s time to hit the hay.   I always enjoy hearing different perspectives though.   Have a good night, and I hope next Friday is a better day for us all.

Finn is 5th in OHL defensive scoring, 1 behind Ceci and Hamilton.

He’ll get there by graduating kids…that’s how Tim Hunter got his gig. Most 20 year old kids are undeserving…the idea is to change that and send them along to the Leafs.

If he chooses to win at all costs he should be fired.
