After a taking a 2-0 lead in the first period, Malcolm Subban (36 saves) was the story the rest of the way for Team Canada as they edged Team USA 2-1 and moved to 3-0 on the tournament.

1st Period

That’s more like it.

Canada played probably their most complete period of the tournament thus far and were able to neutralize most of the American forechecks as well as the USA’s active defense.  Trouba has been able to sneak in from the point to throw a couple of slapshots on net but aside from that, Team Canada has been pretty aware of what the US is trying to do out there.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored Canada’s first goal with a quick wrister from the slot.  A faceoff win, a couple of crisp offensive zone passes and the Americans overplaying the puck defensively were the keys in the build up to the RNH tally.

The second goal went to Ryan Strome after a Ritchie wraparound found its way to his stick for the near tap-in.  Canada’s forecheck led to a turnover in the offensive zone and Strome was the beneficiary of the hard work down low.

2nd Period

Not much to report in the second.  It was a tight checking period a no goals were scored but we did get to see some flashes of Nate MacKinnon and his potential if he were given enough icetime to make an impact.

Drouin looked fantastic once again.  I don’t catch many QMJHL games but I’ve definitely been sold on his potential as a lottery pick in the 2013 Draft.

3rd Period

As far as goals go, Jacob Trouba’s powerplay marker was the only goal and it was scored in transition on a 4-on-2 after Canada failed to capitalize on a 2-on-1 the other way.  I don’t envy Subban having to try and predict what would happen with that puck as it was tipped all over the place.

The period on the whole was rife with penalties and Canada’s powerplay didn’t look overly threatening.  Passes weren’t nearly crisp enough and Ryan Murphy once again passed up a great opportunity for a shot only to make a less than inspiring pass.  At this point, Harrington and Reinhart are the only two defensemen I would least like to see on the ice during a powerplay than Murphy.  He’s a better offensive defenseman than he’s shown this tournament and his defensive lapses at 5-on-5 are infuriating.

Tyler Biggs played a Tyler Biggs game in limited icetime.  He spent more time on the penaltykill than he does with the Oshawa Generals and was fine in the role.  His forecheck game was good and he was a little shot happy, avoiding having the puck on his stick for more than a couple of seconds at a time.  Biggs was defensively sound as he almost always is.  Not spectacular but effective.

Morgan Rielly made consistently smart decisions with the puck and finished up at +1 on the day. It was a small play, but on Canada’s 5 on 3 late in the third, a puck nearly squirted free in the neutral zone for an American break and Rielly laid out nicely to divert the puck to a teammate and away from danger.

So things went more or less to script with Canada and Russia facing off tomorrow morning at 9:00am EST for first in the division.  Assuming Slovakia can beat the Germans later today, the US will have to beat Slovakia tomorrow morning to make it through to the medal round.  Hopefully they’re able to get up for that game after a pair of pretty deflating losses.

Had a scary incident at hockey this morning.  I was playing in the later game and when I arrived during the first game one of the guys was flat out on the ice.  He had just come out for the 2nd period and collapsed on the ice with no pulse.  One of the goalies is an EMT and in less than a minute CPR was started.  Within 4 minutes the Defib unit was properly connected and activated and they were able to get a pulse back.  The ambulance took about 15 minutes to get there and he would have been long gone before they could have helped. Before he left he was conscious and didn’t appear in too much distress other than his head which he banged on the ice when he collapsed.

Two important points. One is that many of the local EMSs are handing out free Defib units for public places.  Encourage people to get them in place.

The second point is that the player, who is pretty fit, was feeling really weak at the end of the first period.  We’re all getting older and it’s important to recognize warning signs that something more serious might be wrong.  Listen to your body.

Anyways, the boys were in pretty good spirits after the game (even though we lost again!!!!) as we got word from the hospital that our buddy was doing well.

That’s a great story and a happy ending for all. I would only add . CPR training is something everyone should take if possible and make sure you re-certify every yr. There are changes happening to the procedure all the time

Glad everything turned  out well for your buddy.

I play with a 45+  gang. One of our goaltenders is a Doctor. Its comforting to know hes back there for reasons other than his goaltending.

Your advise on listening to tour body is spot on

The ironic thing is that the EMT who was there was going to give a lesson on the use of the Defib units to the 2 early teams after their game.  One of the other 2 teams, who played in the later game, was going to get trained next week and the other team the week after.

As to CPR, you’re right on BB.  I’m not trained but things have changed regarding the ratio of compressions to breathing.  The new Defib units have programs built into them that monitor what you are doing and how to administer the CPR, but that doesn’t take the place of having qualified CPR training.

Don’t know the laws on defib units in Ont. but the yr I left work they where just showing up in the work place and you needed to be licensed to use them back then . I think that’s changed now and you just need to take the course and be qualified

Patrick Roy says Grigorenko is staying the season in QC..no camp with Sabres
What do you guys think Burke will do with our boy?
Christ at least if we follow Roy’s example, we could probably
Get him out of Moose Jaw in a trade…

I watch the in Halifax and have seen them in person beside eachother and Drouin looks like a child beside Mackinnon. The stats are way off as Mackinnon is taller then me and I’m 5’11. He will be the best player by a mile in this draft and I think he’s hurt now because he doesn’t look close to himself

Burke said that the consensus would be that an NHL team will be aloud to call up two players from junior to play in training camp. Those two players will be Morgan Rielly and David Broll. (Interview with Sportsnet)

I f Moose Jaw doesn’t trade Rielly and the lockout ends, I can see him in Training camp and then get that 9 game look see.

The only advantage Rielly would get from playing with a young non playoff team would be the development of leadership skills.

Dions heir could still be a Defenceman from the WHL

Catch 22 is no one will give Moose Jaw any real
Value for him if the possibility of him sticking with the
Big club exists…..thats why the Roy declaration makes some sense..
Don’t get me wrong…..his speed and smarts are NHL ready
But is his 18 year old frame up to it

Just finished watching the game. Good result for the Leaf, not great. Thought the offense was disjointed and very underperforming. Can’t believe we couldn’t score on the 2 minute 5-on-3, and was surprised at how quickly Rielly was substituted for Hamilton. “Teachers Pet “syndrome is really pissing me off. BCP or anyone else, can you please explain to me why our O was so lacking. Were the US that good or were we just off tonight? Two goals we scored were in and around the net. Then we seemed to lose this advantage. had few periods of 5-on-5 concerted offensive pressure. US penalties really helped us IMO. Yep, I found the O very disappointing, and SNOTT’s bias is pissing me off.  Subban had a great game, but so could have Binnington.

Defibs save lives, no doubt about it. Even if you’re not properly trained you could use one if no other options are available. You unwrap the unit and it begins to talk you through he steps to connect the paddles and when to not touch the patient. If the patient doesn’t need the stimulation, the unit won’t give it. Every arena should have one.

Hamilton missed the net 3 times in a row on one PP…
He also , like some others , can NOT handle the juice
On Rielly’s passes…they have serious gas and are on- tape

Canada didn’t look at its best. Only scored 2 in the first. Subban was solid. Rielly got short changed again but seemed to play solid. US self destructed in the third with penalties when they were playing sustained pressure on Canada. We had a 2 minute 5-on-3 and couldn’t score. Hamilton-Murphy seemed to get most of the ice-time. Go figure.

Was unimpressed with the Marlies. Little offense. Griffin goalie thought htere was a penalty, skated off the ice and Ashton pushing out of deference scored an empty netter. Hammer scored the second from a cross from Abbott I believe. Hammer was hovering on the right side of their crease. Hammer’s second was an empty netter. Ranger was sat, Yeo played with Koska. For the second game in a row I thought Blacker played strong..
