39:00 McCown says he is 100% certain that talk between Van and Tor revolved around Van insisting on Kadri and Gardiner in Luongo deal. Burke would not do it even with people in his group telling him to do it  as a shot at saving his job.

Say/believe what you want about McCown but I have full confidence that he is not BS ing on that info

I still don’t think that is why he was let go, we will find out soon enough.

That’s what has me concerned.  If Nonis trades Gardiner for Luongo…I’m done.

Bottom line, I want the leafs to do well no matter who plays.

Alec summed up how I feel about today. I’d almost liken it to the death of a friend. I’m angry. Time will help. Success will help. I think back to the evenings at the Gardens. While we had great players, the fans are what make the leafs. I miss that camaraderie, that effusive humour, that never-say-die attitude shrouded in heavy smoke, or at the troughs. Owners can’t take that away. man I was so lucky to be in that era.

On the other hand, I can’t see Nonis accepting the job knowing that the suits want that deal accepted.  If he does the deal…it’s a stab in Burke’s back.  If he doesn’t do the deal….does that mean MLSE fires him too??  Doesn’t add up for Nonis here.

I don’t think JFJ realized exactly what he was getting into when he was hired by the hands-on Tannenbaum Petty group either

Rogers has left the blue jays alone, I don’t see them changing course all of a sudden.

If the Leafs trade for Roberto Luongo they are putting themselves in a perilous position.
It has potential to be a horrendous trade if things go wrong. Now the word “if”
and the Toronto Maple Leafs have a treacherous history. The Leafs should never
tempt fate. Whenever the Leafs tempt fate, it has a way kicking them when there down.

The first instance that comes to mind is a .500 Leaf team trades a first round pick to
acquire Tom Kurvers. Tom Kurvers!!?? Well Kurvers did help the Leafs to fall in the
standings to third last…pretty bad eh, but then to make matters worse, the NJ
Devils draft a young son by the name of Scott Neidermyer. Of course Neidermyer goes
down in history as a multi-cup winner with international success, and is
basically considered a generational talent, first ballot hall of famer. A helluva trade.

When the Leafs traded a first in ’97 to reacquire Wendel Clark…it turned into Roberto
Luongo. When we dealt for Vesa Toskala the first rounder was a key part of SJ moving
up a couple spots and drafting Logan Couture. JFJ deals Tukka Rask a first
rounder for Andrew Raycroft…ugh!  Two firsts and a second for Phil Kessel turn into
a second overall and a ninth overall, one is already an allstar in Seguin, and
another on the way in Hamilton. It seems whenever the Leafs tempt fate and
trade a pick or a young prospect they turn into a hall of famer or at least an
all-star. It seems if it can go wrong it will. You can add Randy Carlyle and
Bernie Parent to the list of kids moved for nothing and turn into Norris trophy
winners and two time Conn Smythe and Vezina winners. C’mon man!

Enter Luongo back into Leaf lore. Let me ask you: What can go wrong? With this
contract in the salary cap era, the Leafs could be hand-cuffed. My children
will probably be married by the time this contract comes to an end and my
children aren’t old enough to remember the Leafs in the playoffs. Luongo is 33!
The guy is being chased out of Vancouver. Maybe he won’t do so well with our D
after leaving one of the best defenses in hockey. He doesn’t like pressure…Hello!
What can go wrong? As our MLHS friend Matt once put it….Welcome to Hell Leaf
fans, your usual table is waiting!

    I’ve no doubt that…
    -
    1) The new ownership wants their players to be the stars and face of the franchise and not the GM and this played a big role in today’s announcement
    2) The new ownership wants a person with a very different style and handles the media differently
    3) The new ownership wants someone who is willing to do what it takes to win at all costs, including many of the things Burke was philosophically opposed to
    4) The “Luongo stuff” played a role but not because Burke wouldn’t specifically give up Kadri and Gardiner but because he generally doesn’t want to pay a steep price at this point. I don’t think the Board is going to tell Nonis he has to trade Kadri and Gardiner or give VAN whatever they want

Of course it is, if they wanted to go a different direction they would bring in an outside hire, not Burkes right hand man.

I’m not suggesting it isn’t about the hockey side of things at all because it is to some extent but Nonis is very different than Burke so I can see why they are happy to keep him on.

Also, if you’ve listened to Toronto sports radio over the past 5+ years you’d know that Tom Anselmi is a good guy and a straight shooter who’ll put as much of the truth out there as he can without crapping on ownership. I think he was a little hung out to dry by the board/owners today. One or more of them should have been there on a day like today. Shame on them for not being there. I’m not talking about Larry T who had to be in New York. Nothing like a bunch of millionaires hiding in there corporate suites. Lame…

Kadri and Gards for Lou? If Nonis did that I think that be pretty hypocritical from what I gathered in the interview. He seemed pretty adamant about not throwing away our youth for example a 33 yr old goalie

I believe this was about Burkes bluster as well. All the corporate assholes I met for the most part like the guy who’s right outta the book. Burkes a take it or leave it kinda guy and regardless of what the end result was I’ll miss that cuz those men are a rare and dying bred amongst ppl who reach that position. I hate big business in all forms especially big oil… End of rant.

The thing that really surprises me is the advisor role??? I can’t understand the reasoning other than to just honor the contract. Feel sorry that he’s doing it actually. Like a hot girlfriend telling you that she just wants to suddenly be friends.

It’s funny Nonis mentioned Finn, Reilly, Ashton and Leivo and not Kadri.  I hope Kadri not part of the deal. Too much for a 33-yr old goalie.  Hope Nonis sees this shortened season as an opportunity to just ride out and hope they can get into the lottery and McKinnon sweepstakes.

Also extending RW and wasting that money for no reason.  I still think it was personality clashes with new owners/board members

For all of you searching.  This was the article that mentioned Burke maybe getting fired.. it was dated June 2012

     http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/brian-burke-resignation-rumors-bubble-toronto-hockey-media-044142557.html

On Sunday, a Toronto sports website called BlueToro.ca published a report — since deleted, but cached here — that Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke “could soon be” fired by Maple Leafs Sports Entertainment “because of an extracurricular incident, implicating other MLSE employees.”
