Leafs trade Matthew Lombardi to Phoenix for conditional 3rd or 4th round pick

The draft pick is a fourth rounder in 2014, which could become a third if Lombardi re-signs in Phoenix or records a certain number of points with the Coyotes this season.

Obviously, this is better than using the amnesty buy out because a) the Leafs get a pick, and b) retain both of those buyout options for the summer period should they want to exercise them. The Leafs will pay his $500,000 bonus and retain some of his base salary in order to off load the cap hit.

There has been almost no mention of Matthew Lombardi throughout camp and it was pretty clear his place wasn’t here this season. He would’ve just been in the way of the advancement of the likes of Nazem Kadri and I would’ve been more than a little PO’ed if we had to watch another game with Lombardi miscast on the checking line wasting everybody’s time.

A mid round pick is a pretty good get for a misfit piece of Lombardi’s circumstances. In moving him, the Leafs free up $3.5 million in cap space, taking them down to around $62.5 million in cap payroll.

The pick Leafs receive is in 2014. Right now it’s a fourth rounder but can improve to third if Lombardi re-signs or reaches certain stats.

I agree……didn’t help that Connolly was hurt at camp, didn’t start the season and upon return Lups/Bozak/Kess were putting up the points

He’s not a run and gun player though.  He’s a cycle and slow the play down type of player.

Even if I did hate Bozak, which I don’t, you’re simply being evasive.  You’re also re-writing history.  Connolly was acquired with every expectation that he would provide the playmaking finesse Bozak lacks.

How is that nonsensical? He was signed to a short term deal to buy time for the kids do develope. If it wasn’t working out or a kid developed quicker Connolly is a guy that would be able to be moved fairly easily especially with 1 year left on his contract. Therefore trading money for a pick

He’ll also be 32 when this contract is done…if you honestly see him as a 50-60pt centreman on another team then good for you however I’d wager most don’t see him as that type of player anymore.

I doubt Columbus has a team 10 years from now (perhaps even 5 years).  They’re toast, methinks.

Burke is gone because he would not circumvent the cap and bring in stars like Richards or Kovalchuk…..he had the green light to spend but was too bloody stubborn, if you have a chance to aquire a Brad Richards to center Kessel, Lups, well, you should dam well do it, do what’s best for the team, drop the ego. Burke got burned, these contracts can now be bought out if they don’t perform. Burke did a great job but that was one of his faults.
