Game in 10: Game #4, Isles 7 at Leafs 4
Share

How do you undo any progress and momentum gained by a 5-2 win over Pens in their home opener? How about a 7-3 loss to the Islanders back at home, coughing up a two goal lead and conceding five unanswered? That’ll do it.

1 - I’m going to go ahead and say the Leafs didn’t look good from puck drop. They went up 3-1, scoring three goals in 13 minutes, you say? True, but it was wide open hockey and not at all what the team was doing well in the first three games of the season. The first period kind of reminded me of the good of the Wilson era: fun (but not good), high-chance hockey, quite a few goals, but constantly playing with fire. And the opening goal on Scrivens was actually the worst one he conceded tonight (of three awful ones).

2 - It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong in this one, because it was a bit of everything. What literally started it: The Leafs were feeling pretty good about themselves up 3-1, nearly scored a couple times on an early second period penalty kill, Komarov makes a dangerous pass out of the corner while shorthanded, the Leafs get caught up ice, and it’s 3-2.

3 - The mental mistakes then start flying, beginning with a soft play up the boards by Franson (who had a game to forget and then some), as the forwards collectively flew the zone. Gunnarsson does a demonstration on how not to take away a forward’s stick out front and it’s 3-3. Collapse is on.

4 - The Leafs then start doing a lot of giving away and standing around, and Ben Scrivens starts doing a lot of sucking.

5 - Hey, what do you know, Keith Aucoin scored. Brad Boyes, too. When it rains it really does pour in Leafland.

6 - I’m not going to get bent out of shape about the goal on Reimer. Phaneuf thought there was going to be a whistle and that the Isles would be coming after him for that hit on Tavares, which amazingly went unpenalized. He kind of just tossed the puck away and it fell to Moulson in the slot, who sniped top left. I think Moulson was the only one who was still thinking about the puck on that play.

7 - On the upside, Frattin and Kadri were all over the scoresheet and showed some chemistry together. That line looks like it will be ok despite losing JvR, who has moved up the lineup after the Lupul injury. Goal and assist for Kadri, goal and two assists for Frattin in his first game. Frattin had two particularly sweet plays tonight: one, that deft touch in the neutral zone setting up Grabovski’s goal; two, the Leafs’ fourth goal when he kicked it up and batted it in out of mid air.

8 - The Leafs really need to start scoring on five on threes when they can actually affect the outcome of the game.

9 - Was this about the back to back games? We better hope this doesn’t mean last season’s trend is carrying into this one because the Leafs will be a tired team playing a rested one eight more times this season. One thing you will notice about this team is how they’re still a skating team first – opposing team’s coaches often mention this about the Leafs, as Dan Bylsma did yesterday – without much of a grind-it-out game to fall back on (this hasn’t changed really from last season, because the personnel hasn’t drastically changed in the direction of the more physical, particularly in the top six). It makes them quite dangerous when they’re using it to their advantage, but combine tired legs with suspect goaltending – the Leafs can’t rely on one of their goaltenders to win them a game – and it could be disadvantageous in back to back scenarios.

10 - This was a nightmarish rewind to the end of last season, and as wide open and undisciplined from a systems standpoint as some of the worst, high-scoring losses of the Wilson era. The Leafs can expect some Carlyle-induced hell at practice tomorrow.

Deep inside Phaneuf hates playing for the leafs because they suck and wishing he played for his hometown Oilers.

Well – everybody knew that we need to evaluate the goalie situation this season and see one of Scrivens and Reimer can carry the team. To me that is a 48 game window.

But I can’t help thinking about what this team could be with a top notch goalie and Mats Sundin as the 1C.

GONG SHOW last night. I wonder if Franson will ever look like he really care out there ? And Little MacA is totally misplaced as top six forward….to small and not enough skill. He looks like has has a bit of grit out there when he skates hard after someone, but then Little MacA just bounces off whomever he tries to hit . Those two dudes are gonesville, if I am Nonis. Not trading Little MacA last season for a first rounder ? Priceless.

ok, seems theres lots of anxiety about our goaltending…and maybe rightly so. Further to my comment on my favourite whipping boys, would Franson and MacArthur , and one of our goalies, get it done for the backup kid in LA ? He is supposed to be good but Quick is the man there for the next ten years. And this post in no way zeros in on just the goalies last night…it was a team funkfest.  Lastly, it must be mandatory when the Isles play in Toronto for Tavares to make the Leaf D look like chimpanzees on skates, and for Moulson to score at least once.  Sorry, still cant come up with the LA goalies name . And for me, no matter how bad we are …NO LOU

All I wanna say is this
Development is NOT a 4 game process. Nor is it a 1 season process most often. It takes time and especially long for goalies. We have 2 good kids, let em play for now, let em learn. 1 game means nothing.

Jeez just woke up, what a horrific score. Hopefully the boys learn from it and move on. I haven’t been impressed with the Rangers this season so far, so let’s just take out that loss on them Saturday night

it may be that one of Reimer or Scrivens becomes the man. And for all the hype Bernier gets because he was a first round pick, he hasnt done much or played a lot as a pro. But, the pedigree is there, whilst our tandem cant say that (albeit both played well in the minors . My thought process is more about moving MacArthur and Franson, neither bring much to the table, in my opinion. And, I gotta be honest , I am not sure at all that either Scrivens or Reimer will be in the bigs in two years.

It’s hard to say if either guy will be a true starter at this point but we still have to stick with em. I’ve also said for a long time that Bernier would be a guy I’d go after if we were to go after another goalie but that shouldn’t happen yet. The season is still young. We’ve only seen Reimer in 1 game and Scrivens simply has consistency issues. He has all the skills needed to do well, he just has to figure out how to bring those skills to the table every night and thats common with rookie goalies. If he can do that we’re golden.

i like wins, but again, if we’re not winning at least the kids  are getting minutes. Great night for Fratts and Kadri. I did stop watching halfway through the 3rd and turned on far Cry 3 though. At least there i do the killing rather than watching my team get killed in real life

I think its far to early to be freaking out at our goalies at this point.  Even the best goalies get blown out of the water once in a while.  The system broke down last night bottom line.

I am so glad Kadri started well… and for all the critics, naysayers.. etc…

Kadri currently 16th in NHL scoring..  His time on ice per point is under 11 mins!!!  I know it is early but people now better cut him some slack.. He has matured..

Oh for all the people who thought we should have traded up and got B. Schenn… be extra patient for Kadri… just to compare:

    Kadri     55gp, 11G, 24pts, (-1 +/-), 90 shots, 12.2% shooting % (3 ppg)
    Schenn 66 pg, 12G, 21pts (-8 +/- on better team), 111 shots, 10.8% shooting % and (4ppg)..

If it keeps going this way with Kadri’s development,… we did well by waiting for the 7th pick.. oh and telling Murray from Ottawa that oh you want him, too bad we are taking him!

I totally agree.  I think this season should be all about giving minutes to our younger players to see what we have.  So far its working out for us IMO.  The off season is the time to make any major moves this year IMO.

Neither one of these guys will be a # 1 in the NHL…..its a repeat of Toskala, Raycroft, the Leafs are wasting their time with these two…they’ll be distant memories in a year or two….
