Some of the interviews in case you missed them during the live stream:
Found some chatter about Ranger on a hockey board today. A Tampa fan had this to say about when Ranger last played:
"He played #2 minutes. He was an anchor on the PK and logged 3:30+ a game (in 08-09 he was clocking over 4 minutes a game), 2nd unit PP time. Played 25+ minutes a game.
Was probably slightly overmatched in that role. Ideally at that stage he was the anchor on the 2nd unit as opposed to playing top pairing minutes game in game out. (bear in mind he was only 24-25 at this point, with less than 200GP)
When Boyle went down in 08-09 he was the Lightnings #1 dman.
Mobility was excellent, outside of that he wasn't outstanding at anything, he was just good at everything. Two way dman with a decent first pass, positionally sound defensively, didn't jump into the play enough (could have come from playing with Boyle).
From last year:
"Ranger, a 2002 sixth-round pick by Tampa Bay, was so highly regarded, then-coach John Tortorella said in 2005-06 of the rookie that he already had one of the league's best first passes out of the defensive zone.
"There's no doubt in my mind," Lightning wing Marty St. Louis said when asked if Ranger will be able to play. "When he was with us he was so good. he had so much potential, I don't think it will be too hard for him. I'm happy for him that he's coming back."
Dreger: Franson wants 1 year, but Leafs aren't having it: http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2013/09/11/dreger-franson-wants-1-year-but-leafs-arent-having-it/…
And all I can say is I’m going to be the best that I can, and I know that I have greatness within me, and I’m going to do everything I can to prove it to myself, first and foremost - Beauty!
Toronto Maple Leafs’ Paul Ranger couldn’t be happier with shot at return to NHL
@Xxxxxnew hope he can get back to that, hes a big big boy and i spoke to him once at a marlies game. Nice guy
@Xxxxxnew and this comes from tortts, one of the hard nosed coaches in this league
So, Nonis is insisting on a 2 year deal?
Besides the fact we have a bunch of pending free agents to lock up next summer, why in the world would he wan't Franson to be an UFA when his deal expires?
@Dangle_My_Berries man that was some great stuff there.
This team is full of guys proud to wear the jersey now...but Ranger tops them all....this could be a yell of a story!
I still have trouble gauging how good he is. Not that he isn't good. Just haven't seen him shine in any of the games I've watched him.
@Bobsyouruncle Nypreos is having some trouble multiplying that x 6. Stay in school you kids.
@Burtonboy How can you root for him?
@Burtonboy Love that he said privileged, when asked what he thought about being a part of all this (playing in TO)......Jesus, I`m cheering for this guy and hope he has a tremendous camp.
@wiski interesting that a player would fight against term on his contract. Guess he wants to wait for the cap to go up to get a bigger piece of the pie on a deal a year from now
@wiski He should have thought of that last season
@-Keon- actually, i do recall players commenting on how he would be the most interesting person in the room. So who knows
@-Keon- I dont feel as if Gustavsson got along with his team mates very well here
@Burtonboy Very nicely done by the Sabres.
@Burtonboy not a bad guess at 4.3 cam. Glove tap
@Burtonboy got paid
I'm glad I found an assessment from a non leaf fan who saw him before he left. Also, on that fan site there a couple of fans who are still pissed at him that he left.
I suspect he lost the ability for figuring multiples of 6 from that time when he was in a coma on the ice choking on a growing pool of his own blood.
@dlb eh @wiski We likely wouldn't have Phil Kessel if Burke had been successful with the Sedin twins. It would have made the value of our picks too low to offer them as compensation for Kessel. That said, Chiarelli supposedly wanted Kulemin and White before the secondary picks. And moving White likely would have negated the Phaneuf deal. Funny how everything's connected.
I think Burke had a meeting set up with them but in the meantime they signed again in Van. I don't think he was close to signing them.
Yea, but if he signs a one year deal, he'll be in the same position next summer. A RFA with no leverage.
If he signs a two year deal, he'll be an UFA when the deal expires and he'll have a ton of leverage to cash in on a big payday.
haha, and the Liles ones with the #24 on them too
@Xxxxxnew ya for sure, i imagine this kind of thing happens to a bunch of young players. Anyone who's ever gone away for university or college has probably gone through a similar experience.
Loiselle was saying last summer that this sort of situation pops up with young players a lot more than fans realize, but Ranger just went one step further and got away from the game for a while. His agent was saying he got the bug again while coaching kids teams back in Ontario.
@TheCanucksnaphook @Dangle_My_Berries in addition, you really never know how a young hockey player is gonna adapt to change. Some of them can make the adjustment easy, move from home at a young age, deal with expectations, live on their own, be away from their families for extended periods of time, deal with the media pressure, deal with fan scrutiny and expectations. I think there are times in everyones life where they aren't at their strongest, and sometimes its best to take time to reconfigure and revisit priorities. I don't hold any of this over Paul's head cause hes just showing us that hes a human being like everyone else and imperfect. It's his willingness to reinvent himself that is the most important thing here
@TheCanucksnaphook @Dangle_My_Berries same, and who knows where this goes for him. He wouldn't have made this progressive return to the NHL had he not put alot of thought into it. Not to mention management would have done their homework on Ranger prior to signing him, his old team mates in Tampa had nothing but glowing praise for the guy and if he gets the support he needs, I see him being a good player for us
@ConnorCrisp He finished a distant second in that fight. I think if you watch the fight very carefully, you can actually pinpoint the very moment that you knew that simple math would no longer be possible for him...
@-Keon- wow I agree with you
@dlb eh @Dangle_My_Berries @wiski Yeah, but I can see him getting squeezed again next summer with all the important RFAs/UFAs we have. Unless we can move someone like Liles out (if we could ,we would have) I don't think things are looking too good for him. Even if he signs, it will be well below his market value of 4-4.5. Wish we had the space for the 4x4 he offered.
I've often thought of the "what ifs" of deals made and not made over the years, for a lot of other teams as well.
Could very well be. I just don't remember it being that certain. I knew he flew over there. I think that he had a peek at Gus on that trip, didn't he?
@Xxxxxnew I think it was more than that. The story I heard was: He had flown to Sweden, had contracts drawn up, and was waiting for noon to hand-deliver them to their homes. They accepted their extensions with something like 20 minutes to spare before free agency opened.
