The lines remain the same from Thursday’s winning combination. According to Jonas Siegel, Carlyle “wants some consistency for younger players.”

between what we heard about him before, then seeing him earn a contract, then watch him ever since.

i get the whole Raymond thing.

he's useful right now, but he's not making himself a guy we're going to have to play every night when the team's healthy again...or keep beyond this season

did Ashton play much in the third?

i was real impressed with him again in his limited minutes tonight.  i'd like to konw why he's not playing more.  maybe the worry is he'll do too well and it'll be too tough tot justify sending him down when everyone's back to health?  he looked great with talented players when he's had the chance, and he's worked the boards well and been good on the forecheck, keeping pucks funneling to where the coach wants them and finishing his checks.

You know I will take the win. This is the type of game we gave away last year, this year not so much. rest up boys and come back refreshed.

Smid looked pretty good most of the night.  not real fast.  but wins pucks battles and plays his position well and moves pucks.  not sure what happened after te 2nd.

It was just running through my mind how poor of a puck handler is and then his D pulls a Steve Smith

Man he must think the Hockey Gods have it in for him

Gardiner looked good tonight, but man do I ever miss the version of him from last May

So part of the ongoing analysis of Rielly, how are people feeling about him staying beyond 9 games?

Really looking forward to seeing Clarkson with Lupul & Kadri. We're gonna have 2 great lines.

my Novice coined the phrase Montreal Crybabiens this afternoon.  Has a nice ring to it.  I know i'm using it, and feel free to use it ... er ... freely

Call it bitterness, call it poor sportsmanship, its just weird that a team like Edmonton that followed the Pittsburgh and Chicago model keeps losing and a team like Toronto keeps winning. I guess it is bitterness, but I'm just sick and tired of hearing how talented Edmonton is.. It takes more than top three pick goal scorers to win in hockey. Team game and a Team win tonight. Glad it didn't go to shootout

I can see why Carlyle has love hate relationship with Kadri. Kadri snipes one, does a great Gretzky imitation setting up Lupul , then when the game is 4-4 late in the 3rd , turns the puck over at the blue line and its 5-4 Oilers.

caught period one and two, missed the third and all the pandamonium

could some one tell me why i had to listen to tsn 1050 tell me Phanuef was terrible and a guy the Leafs should consider moving?  i mean, i thought he was solid through two in an overall sloppy game.

also, Gardiner and Gunnarsson played well-er i thought.  and Ranger has been excellent in the last couple games.  again, missed the third so give me some help there.

@Shift_Disturber1

i thought Leivo played more on the peripheral tonight than up until now.  couple times he engaged a little, but he had a lot of off shifts.

he's got game-breaker potential, mabe he picked it up in the 3rd?

ShiftyD
ShiftyD

@dlb eh I didn't really notice him much

No secret they need better d and goaltending. Toronto grabbed other teams 1st rounders and added in their own, seems to be working.

@Zep2  I thought it was Lupul at first. But yeah it was kadri.  Poor rielly was hung out to dry on that turnover.

Wilbur
Wilbur

@Zep2 Yup. Exactly what I said to my dog. He was the only one willing to listen at the time :) But Kadri is young. He'll mature as a player and we'll see less and less of that.

Lescott

Phaneuf was sloppy tonight and he looked disengaged. He coughed up the puck a few times, and missed a few passes that were either off the mark or too soft and put his players in a tough position. Gunner should have had the man in front on that Hall tip in. Reilly was way out on the second Smyth goal. It's good that he can get up and then charge back, but it puts Franson in an awkward position of having to give his man way too much space until Morgan does get back.

Wilbur

@dlb eh This was certainly not Dion's best game of the year as he had a handful of poor give-aways or bad passes but he was still very good tonight. I think the MSM is trying to stir stuff up for trade rumours etc...

mORRganRielly
mORRganRielly

@dlb eh He had a couple of hiccups.  One on the powerplay trying to move the puck and he got turnstiled by Hall -- which is going to happen to most defensemen anyway.

He was okay, but not great IMO.  Gunnarsson kind of made it hard for him too.

DWCMLHS
DWCMLHS

@dlb eh Phaneuf was awesome tonight, as he has been all season.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@Shift_Disturber1 @dlb eh

only had a couple shifts, but he worked the cycle real nice on one of them.  showed hands to o with speed and strength and determination and some hockey sense.  i just want to see him play more...if not n th ebig club, send him down to be a top line wingers in hopes he'll develop into an excellent 3rd liner for us soon

Zep2
Zep2

@Wilbur @Zep2 Thats why i stopped listening to MSM ranting about Carlyle ruining Kadri and Gardiner

They make mistakes , he lets them know. Make too many, your ice time goes down

@Wilbur @dlb eh

it's pretty sad if that's their motivation.  it's pathetic if those are their experts and they're actually doing their best analysis

dlb meh
dlb meh

@mORRganRielly

people finally seeing what i see in Gunnar?

that said, we need him for the PK.  he's money when all he has to do is get his stick on the puck and slap it out.  blocking shots is not something he loves, but he gets a his share.  and misses his share.  he's got guts, takes a beating.

but about Phaneuf.  thanks.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@DWCMLHS

did he make 1 mistake that ended in a goal or something?  i agree with you, but the tsn hosts and the callers seemed to think he was "awful" tonight.  "AWFUL"  figured he had to do something in the third.

ShiftyD
ShiftyD

@dlb eh @Shift_Disturber1 Well. between typing and reading along on here and trying to watch the game sometimes things get missed. However, I can't recall him really doing much that stood out either good or bad.

Lescott
Lescott

He over played it. To be fair, most players probably would have been forced to the outside there by the guy in the centre slot, but Eberle made a nice play.

Lescott
Lescott

The concessions... Get your peanuts!

Franson was sloppy too, though.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@DWCMLHS @dlb eh

i also thought gunnar played well in the 1st and 2nd periods.  didn't catch the 3rd.  but his good play was mostly PK time where he's not having to make sharp passes.

he does make the odd nice pass, but too many are flippy and hang one of our guys out to dry.  i see most NHL players pull off the passes he makes.  just not a guy i give more than an average grade there.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@DWCMLHS

Gunnarsson is an awful puck mover.  he makes 1 in 5 above average passes.

not sure how his positioning is better.  he's often beaten to the front of his net whereas Fraser always seems to be there to box guys out.

as far as better skaters, Gunnar isn't a good enough skater to be far better than anyone lol.  poor guy.  Fraser stands guys up at our blueline.  Gunnar falls back so he doesn't get beat wide.

Gunnar and Fraser are both solid on the PK.  one's paid more.  the other adds more imo.

Wilbur
Wilbur

@DWCMLHS @dlb eh I agree Gunnar is a top 4 Dman. I just wish he were a top 4 Dman on another team ;)

DWCMLHS
DWCMLHS

@dlb eh @DWCMLHS Gunnarsson is a far better skater and puck-mover. His positioning is better, too. Fraser is just more physical. Gunnarsson is a top-4 Dman. Fraser is ideally a #7.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@DWCMLHS

no he isn't.  Gunnar's strengths are Fraser's strengths.  and Fraser can pass and is a lot tougher to play against.  tell me what Gunnar does better and i'm almost positive i'll immediately disagree.  but try, maybe there's something i'm missing.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@mORRganRielly

he honeslty has always looked like this to me.  i hope it's a hip problem.  and i hope it's fixable.  otherwise, he's the easy guy for me to subtract once Fraser returns.  especially because i want to see Brennan (before he got his second hatty)

theacs1966
theacs1966

@dlb eh @mORRganRielly It was Franson that had the rough night.  Riley was along for the minus ride, they were on the ice for at least 4 goals against but Riley was OK.  Then Franson makes up for everything assisting on the winning goal.

mORRganRielly
mORRganRielly

@dlb eh Gunnarsson looks bad right now.  I have been trying to track his body language, but the thing I have noticed the most is that his hip rotation is slow -- because of that, his mobility has suffered.  I don't know.  I noticed it a handful of times so far this season and it's bugging me.

dlb meh
dlb meh

@DWCMLHS @dlb eh

ok.  thanks.  i will watch the replay in the morning, but i had to know how bad it was.  sounds like it's just the usual bs

DWCMLHS
DWCMLHS

@dlb eh @DWCMLHS Radio callers are usually stupid. The hosts might just be having a bad day or something, lol. Phaneuf played 25 minutes tonight, had 2 assists, and was solid all-around. He had a very good game.
