Game Review: Game #79, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 vs Winnipeg Jets 4

Game Review: Game #79, Toronto Maple Leafs 2 vs Winnipeg Jets 4

1342

This game was a fitting end to the Maple Leafs’ playoff chase,
and a fitting final home game in the Randy Carlyle era.

15 shots after 40 minutes in a do or die game. 41 shots against by the end. The team looking utterly clueless as to how to get out of its own end (one shift rivalled the 1:30 shift in their own end in Boston back in November, leading to the Jets powerplay and game winning goal). All sorts of inexplicable stuff going on in the ice time distribution (Also, the team was playing with 11 forwards despite having 3 – Bolland, Lupul and Clarkson – forwards playing through injury. How was the view from the press box, Jerry?).

There was a striking lack of urgency and desperation in the third period before Dave Bolland’s turnover led to the backbreaking goal.

We all wanted this team to keep it interesting and push for that wildcard spot, but the team is getting exactly what it deserves. Ball’s in your court, Nonis and Leiweke.

I've been reading this site for a long time, lol, pretty much everyday, and I post rarely. I really appreciate all your viewpoints, Cameron, wiski, phook etc, you guys are great, Bon Scott, vape on lol. I have been a die hard Leafs fan since the late 70's, born in '75, and it seems like all we know is suffering, except for those glorious runs in the '90s and early 00's. This year has been a big disappointment, there is no denying that. But fortunately, with some perspective, we can see that we are still rebuilding from nothing, and recovering from terrible management decisions that have plagued this franchise since 1967. ugh.

What will Nonis do? Fire Carlyle I think. I remember somebody saying he lost the room sometime early in the season, and I think it's very true. Also we are still a young team, Nonis brought in Bolland/Clarkson/Raymond/Bernier but it was all to little effect, except Bernier. The defensive system is a farce and it needs to change and we need a couple guys to come in and take some pressure off Phaneuf, Gardiner, Reilly. I don't like Phaneuf, I think he should go, but I think Nonis will stick with him for one more year at least. Franson is gone. Gleason has been good, Gunnarsson probably won''t improve much, but he's okay. We need to change the defensive system and have the forwards fully buy in. And I hate this 'collapsing' around the net we do, it needs to change, more aggression.

I don't think Nonis will do too much, other than altering our 3rd and 4th lines. Reimer, Kulemin, Raymond, and Bolland will probably go. I can see us getting our 2nd rd picks back for Reimer and Kulemin. Lupul maybe should be moved for youth, or a defenseman. Kadri is learning, I don't mind if he gets 50pts every year, but i think he will realize what a grind an 82 game schedule is, and re-dedicate himself to training. Bozak keeps getting better. Gardiner and Reilly really impressed this year and will continue to improve. Clarkson, I dunno, but he has to be better and he knows and hopefully he is way better next year. Bernier is awesome and I hope we protect him better than we did this year, 45 shots a game is totally insane.

Anyways, Nonis will be patient, and we will be in the hunt again next year, but hopefully the changes he makes in the off season will be right, although everything is a gamble. It torturous and totally frustrating. Now we have the Blue Jays and all their crap. lol. cheers.

My favourite tweet from last night. Just shows how clueless these guys are.

Bozak on fans booing: "I understand at the end of the game for sure … I don't understand it at the end of the 1st period in a tie game"

Anyone think we could pull off a major trade with Edmonton? I'm talking like Phaneuf and Lupul for Nurse, Eberle and a high pick major?

We need to get bigger and meaner, Reilly, Bernier, JVR are my untouchables

Hearing what a lot of you are saying I suppose something like this may work. But what do I know.

It's better for everybody that Bolland just walks.

@alex callis  nice post only things I think is that Ranger has been significantly better than gleason. I would like to ditch Gleason and keep Ranger. I susre do wanna know what is wrong with Dion cause sincethat Florida game he has been a different player.

@Cloud09  I think this is less of an issue if our bottom 6 had Ashton and D'Amigo, didn't have Orr for most of the season, and could actually play some safe minutes on the forecheck.

Our top 6 (espcially the top line) are GASSED Randy. Overplayed because of poor roster decisions.

@Cloud09  You dumb sniffling fuck.  You gave up a goal with 2,1 seconds left because JVR stopped moving for some  inexplicable reason while you are fighting for your playoff life.  More clear than that?

@Belfour20/JB-45 he shouldn't be playing if he's injured cause he's getting burnt everynight. I don't respect that. If you're too injured to play, please sack up and admit it

@Yan28  Let the kids fight it out for the bottom six. Leafs aren't going for the cup anytime soon and Bolland isn't the guy taking us there.

@TheCanucksnaphook  Fine...I like Kane the player, but his attitude concerns me...however, I will agree to give him a chance...potential and all that....now that Franson is going the other way.  :)

@rustynail @alex callisYeah man, good point, it would be a good cap move as well. Ranger has improved as the season has gone on, wouldn't mind seeing him on the team next year.
