This was a bit of an odd game, scoring chance wise.

The Maple Leafs had a superior possession performance to what they managed Friday night, but — particularly in the third period — they weren’t able to turn that possession into scoring chances, as they generated few shots from the ‘home plate’ area. Jonas Gustavsson had to make saves down the stretch, but wasn’t tested nearly as stringently as Jonathan  Bernier was. This shows in the chances, as the Leafs were beaten by a similar margin to Friday night’s game, despite the fact it was a better game from Toronto. It was a stretch of five minutes, shortly after the halfway mark of the game, that saw Detroit widen its margin, and dominate the second period in chances; when the Leafs had their own push in the second half of the third, few chances came with it. Some nights, that’s how it goes.

Of course, given that the game was scoreless until the final seconds, the whole game is ES close, so those two columns are identical the whole way through. The Leafs managing only two ES chances in the third period, against a team playing a third in four nights, is disappointing.

The third line was again the best; they dominated possession stats, and Komarov and Santorelli were both solid in chances, as was Winnik. Clarkson’s numbers are hurt a little by one shift late in the first, when he was out with Lupul and Kadri on a partial change, a good reminder that a bad shift can substantially alter these numbers. That second line pairing had another weak night in terms of chances, both clearly beaten out, despite good possession numbers. The top line was about normal, generating the most chances, but still getting outchanced themselves.

Rielly and Polak got tough zone starts tonight, and both had poor nights; Rielly was on for a lot of Detroit chances, particularly in that second period lull, and for all three chances in overtime. The bright side was Franson and Phaneuf, both effective in terms of scoring chances, joining Komarov as the only positive players. Robidas had a quiet, low-event night in his return, which is surely a positive.

The fourth line barely played, and all stay down at the bottom; Phaneuf and Franson sit near the top, as they’ve consistently been the strongest in terms of scoring chances on the back end.
