The Maple Leafs played a strong, low-chance game against a Red Wings team that dominated them in chances in two previous meetings.

Toronto had more chances at ES than the Wings in the first and third periods, including the winning goal from Peter Holland, and for a second straight game, the Leafs did a good job defending their third period lead at even strength. Detroit did have the better of the game in the second period, but Toronto was able to limit them to one goal, and got out of the period tied.

Pretty much an even game at ES, as there wasn’t a whole lot between the two teams, despite the three-goal final margin.

It wasn’t a high-scoring night for the top line, which didn’t generate much, but they made up for it by having a relatively responsible game on the defensive end, as the three players were on for just 3 ES chances against each, well down from their usual performances. The line that drove more of the offense was the second line, with Kadri, Santorelli and Komarov, which also ended up around even, a solid performance given that they had the toughest of the zone starts. Holland ended up a -2, but had a good third period, including that winning goal.

Roman Polak, who suffered a serious looking injury in the lead-up to the Detroit goal, ended up a team low -3 at ES Close in his 8 minutes of ice time. With that injury, all the defencemen had to take on a greater share of the ice time, and it was the two youngsters who ended up getting the hardest zone starts. While Morgan Rielly responded well, ending up with a team best +2 at ES Close, Jake Gardiner had a tougher time, ending at -4. Stephane Robidas, who played his most minutes in a regulation game since the first week of the season, finished at a -2.

Rielly makes a move up in the table after his good game. Joffrey Lupul, who looks set for a return this week, should be a substantial help to Toronto’s possession numbers, as he did really well with Kadri in the first nine games of the year.
