Montreal had a strong start, getting six of the first nine chances, and a pair of goals in the first thirteen minutes (the second of which Bernier would like back).

Toronto was able to get even in chances for the period after a good late push, but didn’t get a goal out of it. The second period was also even in chances, with Montreal again having a hot start before the Leafs pulled things back late in the frame. There wasn’t a real push back from Toronto in the third, as an early Montreal goal extended the lead to three, and a good power-play threatened to make it four before the Canadiens managed a goal into the empty net.

The Leafs quickly fell behind in chances, and ended up losing in ES Close while winning chances at ES overall. Montreal were able to dominate the third period, out-chancing Toronto 10-4, as the Leafs struggled to chase down the Montreal lead.

The best line on the night was Jokinen with Booth and Komarov, who were even at ES Close, but were much better after that, with Booth on for a team-best 7 ES chances, and, with Jokinen, finishing at +4. They did have the easiest zone starts on the team, which helped them accrue such positive numbers. Phil Kessel also had a good game, finishing even at ES Close, but in the positive at ES overall, while Tyler Bozak was in the negative after a bad shift early in the third period. Nazem Kadri’s line had a poor night, as they struggled to generate much offense. Kadri was on for only a single Leaf ES chance, and Panik ended up at -5.

Korbinian Holzer had a much better night than on Thursday, despite getting some tough assignments and the most difficult zone starts on the defence. The German finished event on the night, beating out Dion Phaneuf, who was often paired with him. Phaneuf had the worst chance differential on the defence, finishing at -3. The two young defenceman had the easiest zone starts, and both managed to finish in the positive. The best numbers on the defence came from Stephane Robidas, who has managed a couple of strong games in a row, finishing a team-best +4.

Olli Jokinen’s five games with the Leafs have been a fairly successful, as he is over 60% in chances at ES. The Sunday game may very well be his last as a Leaf, as his play has been decent enough that it should draw some interest at the deadline. His fellow Finn, Leo Komarov, went back over 50% at ES overall, the only player on the team above that mark.
