Straight Talk
Share

So we had three Marlies game this weekend, two televised Morgan Rielly Super Series games heading into the weekend and a Biggs multi-goal game as well. By midday Monday I’m sure all the talk will have shifted back to the CBA and the potential for talks.

There was some brief optimism after it was reported that Ed Snider might be distancing himself from the owner’s stance.

“Behind the scenes, there seems to be a seismic shift going on among the NHL’s Board of Governors, also known as the group that Bettman answers to collectively.
And Flyers chairman Ed Snider may be the big mover-and-shaker behind it all.
Multiple sources confirmed to the Daily News on Friday that Snider, once seen as a supporter of the Bettman’s push to rein in the players’ share of revenue, has soured on the process after it became apparent that a deal would not be brokered in time for a Dec. 1 puck drop.
Put simply: Snider and the rest of the NHL’s owners were promised a big win by Bettman, with player concessions on revenue division and contracting rights. The best they’ll get now is a small win in revenue split – coupled with a demoralized fan base and all-important corporate sponsors that are ready to quit.
A source familiar with Snider’s thinking characterized it as: “If this is the deal we are going to get, what’s the point of dragging this out?”

Darren Dreger then added some comments from Bill Daly to encourage the fact that the owners are willing to look for a deal.

“But we told them that we are open to discussing other ways to address those issues if they want to propose any,” continued Daly. “In fact, we used the exact example of “if we need five and we have proposed 3+2 to get there, that we are happy to listening to and considering 4+1 instead. I’m not sure why they chose to characterize the way they did. As I’ve said before, I can only control what we say.”

My thoughts on all of this is simple: Who Cares. The talk is cheap and very little has been done in the way of concessions on either side. It’s probably best to just enjoy what we have.

The Marlies will hopefully keep on keepin’ on, and Morgan Rielly will be featured in Sportsnet’s Friday Night, and we’re finally nearing the point in the season where we can start debating the Canadian World Junior Team roster.

It may not be the NHL, but it’s better than nothing. And it’s still better than pretending to care about the Argos.

NHL Players Likely to Retire in the Event of a full season lockout
Interest list. I disagree with most of it, unless we see radical changes to the way the game is played like we saw in 2005. Players like Shane Doan aren’t going anywhere, but declining filler like Matthew Lombardi might be on the way out

Lupul would be the only real loss IMO…players like Mac A and Bozak are more easily replaced…and I’m really not sure Lupul is here for the longterm..

We were offered a 1st at the deadline for Mac, and Bozak could fetch a late one as well. We can ill afford to pass on these type of returns

Yeh…hindsight is 20-20 though right?..I can only assume if thats true that they must of been late first rounders…I think alot of teamsplayers are in the same scenario as we are…so we may benefit on other players that become available as well….Cox actually had decent article a few days go on why the lockout and no hockey for the Leafs this season wouldn’t be such a bad thing…

I’ve been calling for a new league since the beginning. This one is broken and has an idiot guiding it. Bettman lies. Just read the Winnipeg article. What a two faced liar.

As a fan of “hockey” I’m coming around to the thinking that losing a year if it forces a few teams into bankruptcy would be a great thing. Did anyone read that Florida Panthers operating article on Friday? Spells it out in black and white that the owners are full of shit.

But he has no control over the lives of players. He hasn’t set up the circumstances that have placed this league in such trouble. Bettman has been the center of the “shitstorm” that is NHL league business for 18 years. Does Bettman know what he’s doing? Has anything he’s done in the past proved to you that he knows what he’s doing? Why are the owners still following his leadership? His end will come quickly.

There won’t be higher bidders for Lupul.  People keep forgetting in all their evaluations of the future that the cap will collapse to 60 million, and all the teams who would normally outbid us will be struggling to retain their own talent – not throwing 5 million at Lupul.  Plus, this assumes that Lupul has absolutely no loyalty whatsoever, which seems highly unlikely to me given his obvious desire to be a leader on a young team.

Same goes for the other two, actually. Bozak couldn’t really ask for a team to have treated him any better than the Leafs.  He probably wouldn’t be in the NHL if not for Burke, much less playing next to a top 10 scorer.  MacArthur is Phaneuf”s cousin, which was what drew him here in the first place.  Pretty sure that hasn’t changed. If we wanted all these guys back, we’d have them back.

Top 10 in scoring Bro, and what if the Leafs want to rent him at the Deadline. What if He is not in their plans, so we lose him for nothing. I dont care how you look at it, not playing this season Hurts the Leafs.

And if we wanted to move em we Cant because there is no Season Bro. Winnipeg Calgary Phoenix etc, their are teams that would pay for Bozak and Mac. If we decide Colburne is the Guy next year and just let Bozie walk how does that help us

Well, I think he’s in the long term plans. I don’t know what reason you could give to think he isn’t.  That sort of thing is just baseless paranoia, in my opinion.  We, hysterically, always discount the notion of acquiring a free agent because guys simply don’t make it that far, and yet we assume all our guys will leave.  Which is it?  Do 29 teams retain their UFA’s and the Leafs don’t?
    -
Moreover, if it did come to a situation where he wanted to leave, there would be tons of other teams in a similar position.  Many of the rich teams will have to shed high end talent just to get under the cap.  Just look at the list of UFA’s in the same boat.

Look Guys, If I am Running the Team I have JVR and Frattin for top 6 I dont need Mac. So instead of trading him at the Deadline for a Boone Jenner I just let him walk in FA. How does this help us. We cant trade them for an Upgrade no Bozak for Stasny or Lou. As well. We lose the depth we have to make a trade as well

    This sucks

Yeah the interesting thing with mac though, is he the odd man out on LW? Or does he take preference over one of our other wingers? None of these guys should be playing 4th line if they’re playing up to their potential.

As I said..I think it would hurt to lose Lupul the most…lets face it ..on most teams Bozak is a 3rd line center….and on most teams Mac A is decent 2nd liner..or a very good 3rd liner….honestly how much worse off would we be if Kadri and or Frattin stepped in for MacA…and JVR took over the #1 center role?
