Straight Talk
Share

So we had three Marlies game this weekend, two televised Morgan Rielly Super Series games heading into the weekend and a Biggs multi-goal game as well. By midday Monday I’m sure all the talk will have shifted back to the CBA and the potential for talks.

There was some brief optimism after it was reported that Ed Snider might be distancing himself from the owner’s stance.

“Behind the scenes, there seems to be a seismic shift going on among the NHL’s Board of Governors, also known as the group that Bettman answers to collectively.
And Flyers chairman Ed Snider may be the big mover-and-shaker behind it all.
Multiple sources confirmed to the Daily News on Friday that Snider, once seen as a supporter of the Bettman’s push to rein in the players’ share of revenue, has soured on the process after it became apparent that a deal would not be brokered in time for a Dec. 1 puck drop.
Put simply: Snider and the rest of the NHL’s owners were promised a big win by Bettman, with player concessions on revenue division and contracting rights. The best they’ll get now is a small win in revenue split – coupled with a demoralized fan base and all-important corporate sponsors that are ready to quit.
A source familiar with Snider’s thinking characterized it as: “If this is the deal we are going to get, what’s the point of dragging this out?”

Darren Dreger then added some comments from Bill Daly to encourage the fact that the owners are willing to look for a deal.

“But we told them that we are open to discussing other ways to address those issues if they want to propose any,” continued Daly. “In fact, we used the exact example of “if we need five and we have proposed 3+2 to get there, that we are happy to listening to and considering 4+1 instead. I’m not sure why they chose to characterize the way they did. As I’ve said before, I can only control what we say.”

My thoughts on all of this is simple: Who Cares. The talk is cheap and very little has been done in the way of concessions on either side. It’s probably best to just enjoy what we have.

The Marlies will hopefully keep on keepin’ on, and Morgan Rielly will be featured in Sportsnet’s Friday Night, and we’re finally nearing the point in the season where we can start debating the Canadian World Junior Team roster.

It may not be the NHL, but it’s better than nothing. And it’s still better than pretending to care about the Argos.

NHL Players Likely to Retire in the Event of a full season lockout
Interest list. I disagree with most of it, unless we see radical changes to the way the game is played like we saw in 2005. Players like Shane Doan aren’t going anywhere, but declining filler like Matthew Lombardi might be on the way out

I think that’s understating MacArthur, but I still take your point. I don’t know what team in the league MacArthur isn’t a 2nd liner on with his production.

They won’t have to take less, you’re just making wild assumptions.  It’s not optimism, it’s the simple reality that players will see their pay scaled back a bit once the league resumes, and with the cap dropping, there won’t be massive UFA offers for middling players.

    “middling players”….my feelings exactly..

MacA took a step back last year in my mind..overall he was less consistent and he didn’t have the same intensitycompete level in his game from the previous year…this was exactly why the Sabres let him walk away…

I like Bozak…but no way he should be playing #1 C….he would actually be perfect 3rd line center…

Well..we may miss out on two late round firsts..but would you not trade those late round 1sts+MacArthur+Bozak for 1st overall? (what we would get with no season- in the case we lose both those players/2 picks for “nothing”)

yeah it seemed MacArthur got too comfortable with the production of his previous season, or he was exhausting his mind at the prospect of being as good as the season before. I think 50% of MacArthurs less productive season last year, was Kulemin though. Mac needed him to to be successful.

OK we can revisit that argument later, So now if we decide Frattin and Kadri are Ready due to their play in the AHL are we resigning Mac or Bozie ?

In my mind we really need to decide if Kulemin is second liner or a 3rd liner..

    Lupul JVR Kessel
    Kadri Grabo MacA
    Frattin Bozak Kulemin

    I would really like that 3rd line…

If there is a season, we trade them..if there isn’t, we probably let them walk, yes…i’d think so. Unless Burke wants to keep Kadri and Frattin down again, sign Mac and Bo and trade them at the deadline. I’d much rather Kadri and Frattin get their feet wet though along side Gardiner and Rielly(if hes ready). Share the microscope.

I guess so. Which would probably (if we have a season) be a top 12 pick if things continue the way theyve been since the lockout.
    -
    ex:
    10th overall
    24th overall
    27th overall
    or
    1st overall.
    -
Guess that much is up to what you think is more valuable. Personally i’d take the 1st overall.

Do you think the owners and players would be able to live with the following terms in a new CBA: (keeping in mind that a lot of these items have already been speculated)

    1. 50/50 split of revenue (52-48 for the first year in players favour)
    2. All current players contracts to be fully honored by owners
    3. Cap hit to be adjusted to $60 mil max – $45M min in 2013/14 ($65-45 M this season). To be adjusted accordingly in following years of CBA (to be discussed)
    4. Teams over current cap hit have one season to get under cap without penalty. After that it is a requirement
    5. 7-yr maximum length of new contracts. Maximum change per year 5%
    6. Two contracts allowed to be bought out by owners over duration of CBA honoring contract wholly and making players free agents. This does not affect cap hit.
    7. Players UFA’s at age 28 if not under contract
    8. Re-entry contract remains 3-years
    9. Minimum salary $700,000. Maximum rookie contract $1 million
    10. No re-entry wiavers on player being re-called – unless player requests it
    11. Re-alignment of teams to be determined by NHL (Wpg to West, CBS to East, eg.)
    12. Expansion fees, re-location fees to be shared 75-25% by owners/players
    13. Players salary for 2012/13 to be pro-rated – e.g. play 41 games – get 50% of base salary
    14. Single rooms for players on road 30 yrs of age or over, or players 28 still with original team
    15. Eight-year agreement (with players option to extend this to ten years)
    16. The rest of the items remain the same from last CBA

Of course there are other items that need to be hashed out but could this not be the main basis for a new CBA? (after we discuss this with our accountants/lawyers to see if it makes sense – and it may not!)

I write this out of boredom of not having NHL hockey - and with still hope of a 2012/13 shortened season. S-o-o-o take it for what it’s worth – nothing!

Aye but not all 30 teams have a Kadri Frattin and JVR to fit in. We finnaly get some depth at a position and we cant take advantage of that.

Yeah but thats the business. Its not like their arent replacements in FA either, their definitely are. Personally i think it sucks until we realize the development progress it makes on our youngsters. Do we hold Mac and Bozie in hopes of them getting better, or are we holding onto them in hopes of getting a return? If we’re holding on to them to get a return in a system thats full of players who are waiting in the AHL ala Kadri, Frattin, Colborne, Mckegg, Blacker, Holzer etc etc, or waiting to finally get to the AHL full time, Ross, Ryan, Carrick, Granberg, Biggs (not old enough yet i know), Leivo(same with him), etc etc then i honestly think we’re doing a disservice to our own growth. Guys like Kadri and Frattin need to start playing NHL games, and Mac and Bozie shouldn’t be hindering that process IMO.
