Are the Leafs looking at trading for Brenden Morrow or Chris Stewart?
Brenden Morrow has had his name linked with the Leafs in recent weeks.

As trade rumour season heats up and the Toronto Maple Leafs slip in the standings from 5th to 8th in the past week, Leafs Nation will almost certainly be whipped up into a frenzy over every name mentioned. While we aren’t a rumour website, we are within 19 days of the deadline and there has been some legitimate talk from *actual* members of the media and evidence of three teams in different conferences scouting each other heavily that don’t normally do so.

A lot can change depending on the Leafs position in the standings in the eight games before the deadline, but the Leafs figure to be, theoretically, both buyers and sellers. Granted, in a lockout-shortened season it’s hard to ascertain what the nature of the landscape will be – or if there will be much movement at all – at a deadline where so many teams will still believe in the legitimacy of their playoff hopes. A buyers-heavy market could lend itself to moving out a few free agents-to-be and not so much to adding pieces at a reasonable price.

If the Leafs are looking to add, one name of interest has been that of 34-year-old Dallas Stars power forward Brenden Morrow. The Maple Leafs have scouted the Dallas Stars their last two games and the Stars were scouting the game last night with the Pittsburgh Penguins in town visiting the Leafs. The Stars have a tough decision to make regarding Brenden Morrow and they don’t appear, at this stage, to be willing to extend him before the deadline. That isn’t to say that they can’t get a deal worked out before July 1st, but there is a lot of chatter heating up at the moment. Dallas is trying to get younger and would reportedly be looking for a top prospect or pick — possibly more, which is a heavy price for a player that plays a hard-nosed style and has a body older than his already-far-from-prime years suggest. The Stars won’t get either of those things.

The second name that keeps surfacing is Chris Stewart of the St. Louis Blues. Stewart is off to a good start with the Blues and is leading their team in points at the moment, this coming after a season in which Stewart spent significant time in the bottom six. GM Doug Armstrong gave Stewart a “show-me” one-year contract and he’s delivered. While St. Louis is having an up-and-down 2013, they’re 4th in the West (three points separate 4th from 9th) and it seems unlikely the Blues will sell off an important piece, though the pending RFA is in need of a contract.

The Leafs, as has been talked about ad nauseum, need to get bigger up front and Chris Stewart definitely fits the power-forward mould, as does Brenden Morrow. The Leafs are in no place to be giving up top-prospects at this stage, or trading away draft picks for an aging power forward in the twilight of his career, but if there is a sensible deal to be made with assets not including prospects such as Joe Colborne, Matt Finn, Stuart Percy or Tyler Biggs or first round picks (or multiple 1st round picks), then it’s something worth investigating. How much longer Morrow has as a player in the league is something that can be debated heavily—power forwards have a short shelf life and he’s had some injury issues in the past. As for the “pros,” Morrow is a winner, a fierce competitor, a Olympic Gold Medalist and The Dallas Stars Captain would provide some needed leadership at the forward position, alleviating some of the pressure that Dion Phaneuf shoulders night in and night out.

What team wouldn’t want Perry?  Still doesn’t address the #1C issue though.  This is pure speculation, but I get the feeling the Leafs could swap Kessel+ for Perry at the deadline.  Could be way off.  Not sure I wanna spend 63M on an aging right winger though.  The biggest issue on this team is defence.  It’s not good enough game in, game out.

According to David Pagnotta, a member of Leafs management says the idea of trading Kessel at all is a “fucking joke”.

If we signed Perry in the summer we might be able to trade one of our wingers in a package deal for a center.

Grabo and Kessel have never really been given a decent trial run together tho

Bumping Kessel down the depth chart with Perry would be fucking sick. That’s the type of depth that wins championships.

What 1C do you think the Leafs are getting right now? There aren’t any available. You don’t not get a good player because you need one at another position.

The only centers that may be available belong to Colorado. I really hope the leafs are talking to them even if its Stastny.

I don’t disagree at all actually.  My biggest concern on this team is the defence first and foremost.  Hard for Dion to play to his potential when all he’s doing is playing a shut down role with little support.  Holzer as a #2 is way off.  I’d prefer to see Gardiner there with Phaneuf…for now.

I think if we signed him I’d be comfortable trading Frattin. You have to give to get. But only package him for a 1c.

    Aaron Chan ‏@mapleleafmuse
Perfect fit in FLA “@coreypronman: T.J Brennan: skilled dman who skates well, with little to no defensive value http://panthers.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=660475 …”

Thats the big problem right now, not only are there no 1Cs available but only vague rumors of anybody that we could really use being available. Seems like rosters are locked down right now and we won’t see many, or possibly any big moves until the cap comes down and teams have to make moves to get under it

Don’t want to trade Kessel..but if we can get a signed Perry straight up for him….we should do it….but realistically I don’t see that happening …

Yes, true.  Still, just really throwing out the idea that EDM may be willing to move their pick, and I suspect Gardiner is someone they would covet.

Instead of old vets I hope we trade for RFA’s or players with longer contracts. Because then we can control them for longer. If we are dealing with Dallas how fucking sweet would Jagr be with Kadri. Not realistic but one can dream.

With the cap going down there might be some centers available. Off the top of my head Stastny or maybe even Duchene.

Problem is Perry may be quite happy to play for a handful of teams…and if one of those teams steps up early and trades for him…we may never get a chance at signing him…..there’s no guarantees on anything here…he could sign with the ducks…he could be traded and signed with his new team…and he could test FA and sign elsewhere….but one thing for sure…your chances of landing him would be far greater if you traded for him before he hits FA..
