Friday Fun with Numbers

.937Leafs team save percentage over all situations.

1 – Number of teams to ever break .930 over a full season: the Boston Bruins in 2010-11 with exactly .930. Obviously, overall save percentage has been steadily climbing in recent seasons.

32 – Total goals against through 14 games (2.29 GA/G).

43 – Total goals against if the Leafs team save percentage was .915 – a mark still good enough for 10th overall in the league (all situations). A drop from 3rd to 10th in team save percentage would take the Leafs from 6th to 23rd in goals against per game.

47 – Total goals for through 14 games (3.36 GF/G).

275 – The goals pace the Leafs are on over 82 games. If sustained, it would give the Leafs the most goals in a single season since Washington’s 313 in 2009-10. Only 2 teams have surpassed the 275 goal mark since the 2007-08 season (not including goal paces from 2013 truncated season).

187 – The Leafs current goals against pace. 187 has been good enough for a top 5 standing in the league in every season since the 2004-05 lockout.

2,958 – Current shots against pace for the Leafs (36.1/game). If sustained (surely not), it would be the highest shots against total since the 1992 Sharks, fresh off expansion, allowed 3,080 and finished 11-71-2. The worst shots against total since the turn of the millennium? Atlanta’s 2,911 in 2001-02, when they finished 19-47-11.

– 9.6 – The Leafs average shot margin. Better than only Buffalo.

8 – Wins when outshot (leads the league, 8-4, 0.66 win percentage when outshot). Best record when outshot in a majority of (>41) games? Boston’s 32-6-5 mark when outshot in the 2008-09 season.

9 – Number of assists by Cody Franson. Tied for 2nd in the NHL among defencemen.

10 – Dion Phaneuf’s plus/minus. Tied for 3rd in the league among defencemen.

(Almost) 10: Years since the Leafs last beat the Vancouver Canucks (November 24, 2003).

Bonus fun:

53 – Phil Kessel’s current goal scoring pace over 82 games.

6 – Leafs forwards on pace for 25+ goals.

Friday Morning Links:

– The Leafs have the Buffalo Sabres three times, the New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders and Nashville on the docket in the month of November. The Leafs should be able to keep it rolling with a schedule like that, and maybe even outshoot the odd team.

– Dave Bolland is a Leaf now, through and through. No fraternizing with Barack Obama and his ex teammates.

Carter Ashton will attend a hearing for his hit on Derek Smith on Wednesday night in Calgary. Only a 2 minute boarding call was assessed on the hit.

Coaches and GMs on the hot seat. DGB’s latest.

Get your Keep Calm & Corsi’s Wrong T-Shirt or Long Sleeve (women’s available).

Check out Morgan Rielly going on a rush and scoring as a novice player. If you missed it when we posted this last season, there’s also hilarious clip of Phaneuf at 9 years old launching clappers from the blueline, including one that almost takes out a parent in the stands.

    This one was not fun.

  • Dan39

@lieffan Whatever man, Corsi does not apply to the Leafs.

    Good Morning Folks

  • Mind Bomb

Burtonboy  Sup BB, Lots of little Kids last night ? we broke a record for the most rain on halloween here lol

  • Mind Bomb

    -Keon- Morning Keon
    http://mcubed.net/nhl/tor/van.shtml
    Looks correct, unfortuantley

  • Burtonboy

Mind Bomb Burtonboy Never got a one lol. The neighbors who had little ones moved away and there are only a 1/2 dozen homes along this stretch of the highway and they don’t have small kids .

  • Mind Bomb

Burtonboy Mind Bomb Wow nice, the rain and like 80 kilo winds really put a damper on it around here, not a lot of Kids, although I did almost get in a Fight, lol. These people that speed at night, on Halloween should be banned for life from driving. Guys takes a corner speeding just about wiped out us and a pack of kids. He slammed the brakes hard, and we got lucky he could stop. Unfortuanatley he would not get out of his car and took off.

  • Alec Brownscombe

    -Keon- Yes, sure.
And I’m still seeing 47. You counting the shootout win “goal?”

  • PEIleafnation

tgif…hosting my Friday night trivia tonight then on to SATURDAY…nights all right

  • Cameron19

-Keon- Yea, it says 48 and 32 for +16 differential.

  • Alec Brownscombe

    Cameron19 -Keon-http://www.nhl.com/ice/teamstats.htm?fetchKey=20142ALLSAAAll&sort=goals&viewName=goalsFor
Count up the scorelines and subtract one for the shootout win and it’s 47.

  • Cameron19

Alec Brownscombe Cameron19 -Keon- Just double checked by adding up individual goals – 47 is correct.  The standings page on NHL.com is wrong.

  • Cameron19

-Keon- I noticed last night that the Standings page had errors all over it actually, now that I think of it. They had Ottawa listed ahead of Detroit, and at least one similar mistake in each division. So whoever is in charge of that page maybe doesn’t know what they’re doing.

  • Alec Brownscombe

-Keon- It’s not an OT goal, it’s the shootout win over Ottawa that is being counted when it shouldn’t.

Btw GA is 32 not 33, corrected that a little bit ago (if you haven’t refreshed)

  • lieffan

Dan39 This isn’t Corsi, it’s just shot volume. Pretty amazing how much rubber the Leafs goalies have faced when you break it down like that.

  • Alec Brownscombe

-Keon- Same. Fucking windstorm knocked out the power. Coasting on laptop battery fumes and iPhone tethering.

  • Alec Brownscombe

    -Keon- Downtown Peterborough

  • lieffan

TheCanucksnaphook What’s the word with Lunqvist? Is it the pad length adjustment? Terrible team? Haven’t seen any Rangers games

  • theacs1966

So Phaneuf has always shot wide!

  • Burtonboy

Coyotes give up 40 shots at home, win 5-4. Assume we will be inundated with discussions/column/analysis on how PHX can’t carry on this way.

  • Alec Brownscombe

Burtonboy I don’t sweat getting out shot if I don’t feel they were heavily outchanced. Leafs can get more stops and finish better on their chances most nights.

That shot volume stat when I did the digging though was incredible.
Interestingly, Phoenix had a really good record when outshot (in majority of games, I believe) a few years back.

  • Alec Brownscombe

Burtonboy 2009-10 Phoenix: outshot in 52 games, went 30-15-7

  • Burtonboy

Alec Brownscombe Burtonboy I’d be curious to see just how badly we are getting out chanced not out shot . There will be nights like the Calgary game but over all I wonder just how bad it actually is

  • Burtonboy

    TheCanucksnaphook Against Buffalo though

  • rustynail

CanuckUKinToronto or a lack of equality in shot quality and inconsistencies on what actually is a shot on goal.

  • dlb eh

great links to Phaneuf and Rielly.  Rielly had the same cross-overs when he was 8, and Dion looks the bloody same then and now lol

  • dlb eh

The Leafs should be pointing to the shot clock all game long to remind the opposition how much trouble they’re having scoring.  They’ll squeeze the sticks a little more.  Our goalies will get ramped up a little more.  And we’ll continue to win.  It’s a good tactic 😉

  • Alec Brownscombe

Check out Eberle’s too. Scores an OT winner, of course.
Matthew Lombardi skates really fast in straight lines and has questionable hands

  • dlb eh

    Alec Brownscombe
this is fun.  can’t believe these kids are 8.  i’m watching Big Buff now, might stay here all day;..your tax dollars at work haha

  • rustynail

Burtonboy Alec Brownscombe I am kinda just enjoying that we are winning :)

  • rustynail

CanuckUKinToronto rustynail  true and even all scoring chances are not created equal and certainly not all finishing abilities are created equal.

  • Zep2

    Good morning all
As the discussion rages about the Leafs lack of zone time and SOG , I had a quick look at the games that I considered to have more significance and might be more indicative of what a Leafs team playing with a burr in their  saddle might do
Game one against Mtl, Outchanced and outshot the Habs, shortie by Habs in last minute made the game look tighter than ’twas
Game 3 against Ottowa, shaky start by Reimer, but Leags rallied to to own 5-4 in OT, Leafs outshoot Sens
Game 10 Ducks- after being schooled by the Hawks and fans and pundits in near panic,  Leafs go out and double a pretty good Ducks team winning one for Carlyle. SOG even
Game 12Pens, after sleep walking through a loss to the Jackets come out and shut down Crosby / Malkin and co.  -6 SOG.
The Leafs can play with the best teams in the league , they can also mail in a few games, Jackets, Flames(lucky to win) and occasionally  get thoroughly outplayed (Hawks)

  • Mind Bomb

Yaknowwhat mcloki  Go to the Gym ?

  • dlb eh

    Zep2
yup.  we can turn it up when we need to.  it would be great to find that gear more often and regularly.  but the season is long and the teams that are talented enough get by without having to play desperate hockey every shift.  seems we have talent, and seems our talent has that next gear.

  • http://i.imgur.com/MyKj5C3.gif ingy56

Yaknowwhat Just the flavour of the week, it’s always going to be something with the egghead/slide rule group. They are most just mad because their so-called goaltending “controversy” hasn’t worked out like they thought. I’ll take the wins any day.

  • Greg Fenton

Zep2 I never liked these kind of “when they really turn on it they play better” type of arguments/positions. Good teams don’t turn it on and off. If a player who coach went into a game thinking “I don’t have to give 100% this game”….I wouldn’t want that coach or player on the Leafs.
As you pointed out, there are some games when the Leafs out shot their opponents, but in most they’ve been out shot, and in some cases by a wide margin.
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone say “these wins are tainted” or “they shouldn’t count” or “they are lesser wins because they got out played/out chanced, or because the goalie won it for them” etc…. Every Leaf fan is thrilled with the 10-4 start. But there is nothing wrong with saying they aren’t perfect, they haven’t played great in every game, they have some areas they need to fix etc…. Most of the talk probably comes from a place of not wanting to see them go 4-10 later on if/when run up against some hot goalies they can’t score 4 goals on in 20 shots and/or Reimer/Bernier don’t look super human every night.

  • Airfreshener

    Yaknowwhat Mega Jon!

  • dlb eh

    Greg Fenton
but, Greg.  teams don’t play balls out 60 minutes a night.  100% focus is not the same as 100% effort.  with the good teams it’s their talent and their cohesion to their team concepts that allow them to compete.  they are able to apply 100% focus all game and are able to dig deep and look for another effortt gear when they need to.
you said you played competitive sports.  not all players have the motor running all game long.  most don’t.  it’s the fringe players who must in order to stay in the league, and Crosby.  the rest pick their spots.

  • Mortagleus

Yaknowwhat Bernier house down,  The  Barn Bernier
