Game Review: Game #81, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 2

SUNRISE, FL - APRIL 10: Goaltender Drew MacIntyre #35 lets a goal slip through by Brandon Pirri #73 (not pictured) of the Florida Panthers while teammate Jimmy Hayes look on at the BB&T Center on April 10, 2014 in Sunrise, Florida. (Photo by Eliot J. Schechter/NHLI via Getty Images)

About that pre-game talk of pride and putting in a good effort for Drew MacIntyre in his first ever start…

He’s not mad at himself, I don’t think.

Worst yet, earlier in the period Nick Bjugstad trucked MacIntyre (wasn’t helped into the crease at all) and the Leafs stood around twiddling their thumbs.

Outchanced 26-12 (by Leafs TV’s count) against the Florida Panthers. 37 shots against.

Said Randy: “I thought there would’ve been a little more compassion for the goalie in our net… If that’s all we have, we shouldn’t be thinking too much of ourselves.”

Go back to the Marlies and win a Calder Cup, Uncle Drew. You didn’t deserve this in your first ever NHL start.

Where did the DeBoer stuff start anyway? Is he going to be available for sure?

Simply put...I am trying to give a shit about this team, but it just isnt working right now.

What centers would potentially be available this summer through trade? We all know who might be there from FA.

If I am asked "keep Bozak or Kadri as #2".  I believe you can get more for Kadri in order to fill some glaring areas.

I keep Bozie.

I think one thing the best most interesting thing Shanahan can do for all us long suffering Leafs fans, is to sit in every visitor teams penalty box for a full year. Just for the entertainment value. That clip of Shanahan with that female fan in Vancouver is priceless!!!

EDIT: Ok maybe not THE most interesting thing!!!

Could anyone see bozak getting moved? I'd rather keep Kadri, his value can only go up from this season. Where as I don't think Bozak's will, he had an injury shortened season but did well.

They are talking about Salary cap last night and petter granberg not being able to play last night on Leafs Lunch....too funny.

@Cameron19 you have mocked me for talking about team toughness and guys that are willing to battle.  ARe you seeing my point more now or still discounting it in the NHL?

@NotTheCanucksnaphook

But this was a "bad" season for Kadri. His value has gone down. He has more upside, and we all know it. His contract is cheaper for now as well.

Moving Bozak would shake up the locker room more than moving Kadri.

@NotTheCanucksnaphook  Wouldn't matter what you can get back if you can sign Stastny after. Dump Bozak for whatever, sign Stastny. Keeping Bozak as the 2C would be awful. He's a 40 points player at best without Kessel

@Reether  Easily, he's older than the rest and it would shakeup the core. He could quite easily get moved.

@NotTheCanucksnaphook @Cameron19lol. Why do you think I hate team toughness?  Just because I don't want a 4th line of Broll/Devane/Orr doesn't mean I don't want toughness on my team. A lot of your suggestions that I disagree with, I disagree with as much because of inexperience as style. Honestly, go back and look at some of the fantasy rosters I post - they are never "soft."

@loomx @NotTheCanucksnaphook  Yeah you are right. Lets sign Stastny for 6.5 per for an extra 15 points per season! Fuck that! Keep Bozak at 4.2, trade Kadri only if it is a considerable upgrade or a package deal. Stastny also has had some injury troubles and is not exactly huge or aggressive. How many soft centers do we want?

Reether
Reether

@ingy56 @Reether  Ya I think a player like him and maybe if Lupul gets moved too would shake up the core pretty good. It would be a pretty big wake up call.

Obviously our D needs a few fresh faces too.

@CanuckUKinToronto @darthNihilus@Greg Fenton@Reether I'd consider close to or even 6.5. It seems like teams are looking to have 3 good productive centers these days, we already have 2, Stastny could work as the 3rd IMO. He's good on the dot too which is something we've been lacking this year. Always nice to start the play with the puck.

Reether

@Greg Fenton @Reether @NotTheCanucksnaphook

I've watched Kadri enough through Junior and his first couple years here to know that how he played for much of this season isn't how he has always played. And his "off" year, isn't really that bad.

4evrblue

@rustynail @Greg Fenton@Reether@NotTheCanucksnaphook no Rusty, no he did not. It wasn't his sophomore season either. By saying that am I just making excuses for Kadri? Wait, why am I making excuses for a 23 year old that put up 50pts in the first place? I would think his play speaks for itself.

Reether

@NotTheCanucksnaphook @Great Dane @ingy56 @Reether

I don't think he's a bad player at all. I like Bozak and think he's a good number 2. But I don't think we want to keep both Bozak and Kadri as #1 and #2, and I'd rather keep Kadri. He has more upside, a bit more snarl.

Also as I said at first, Bozak's value will not go up from here. This is probably as good as it gets in terms of getting a return for him.

@Mind Bomb @Cameron19@NotTheCanucksnaphookFine by me. But spend the next 2 years fixing the forwards, and by the time that is done, you've got some high draft picks, and you've got a developed Gardiner and Rielly, as well as defensive prospects that are now regular players.

Cameron19
Cameron19

@NotTheCanucksnaphook @Cameron19With this group? I'd like to see:

-

Gardiner / Phaneuf

Rielly / ________

Gunnarsson / Granberg

-

I oppose the idea that our defense needs to get "less soft" or be better at "clearing the net" and all of that nonsense - yes. But that's not about toughness, that's about fixiing the real problems. None of those tough guys look good here - or if they do, it's incredibly short-lived - because our team exposes them too easily. With the forwards as they are now, we need more mobility to be successful. Once you have a better forward group in place, THEN you can look at bringing up guys like MacWilliam and so forth.
