Game Review: Game #81, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 2

About that pre-game talk of pride and putting in a good effort for Drew MacIntyre in his first ever start…

He’s not mad at himself, I don’t think.

Worst yet, earlier in the period Nick Bjugstad trucked MacIntyre (wasn’t helped into the crease at all) and the Leafs stood around twiddling their thumbs.

Outchanced 26-12 (by Leafs TV’s count) against the Florida Panthers. 37 shots against.

Said Randy: “I thought there would’ve been a little more compassion for the goalie in our net… If that’s all we have, we shouldn’t be thinking too much of ourselves.”

Go back to the Marlies and win a Calder Cup, Uncle Drew. You didn’t deserve this in your first ever NHL start.

Where did the DeBoer stuff start anyway? Is he going to be available for sure?

Simply put...I am trying to give a shit about this team, but it just isnt working right now.

What centers would potentially be available this summer through trade? We all know who might be there from FA.

If I am asked "keep Bozak or Kadri as #2".  I believe you can get more for Kadri in order to fill some glaring areas.

I keep Bozie.

I think one thing the best most interesting thing Shanahan can do for all us long suffering Leafs fans, is to sit in every visitor teams penalty box for a full year. Just for the entertainment value. That clip of Shanahan with that female fan in Vancouver is priceless!!!

EDIT: Ok maybe not THE most interesting thing!!!

Could anyone see bozak getting moved? I'd rather keep Kadri, his value can only go up from this season. Where as I don't think Bozak's will, he had an injury shortened season but did well.

@NotTheCanucksnaphook That is the conundrum.  Fans were really interested and then got "destroyed" this year because of how they collapsed.  So clearly if you are Leiweke/Shanahan, you cant go into next season with the same coach nor the entire core intact (even if you change bottom 6).. To ensure fans "believe" in the team .. they need to move 1-2 core players and try to have one big name coming back.

No doubt in my mind about that..

@Reether We need to look at Stastny as UFA.   Then also consider trade for upgrade on Bozak or if Kadri is part of 1D package.

Also need to look at who is available due to current contract who has upside at defense and forwards?  ie.

Say Tyler Myers if scouting staff think he can turn into 2nd pairing defensive D man- then just acquire a number 1/2 D man pending Dion..

@NotTheCanucksnaphook  I think before that question can be aswered we have to know who the coach is, what style he wants the team play, and which of hte two is better suited to that style and which is more likely to thrive.

@NotTheCanucksnaphook

But this was a "bad" season for Kadri. His value has gone down. He has more upside, and we all know it. His contract is cheaper for now as well.

Moving Bozak would shake up the locker room more than moving Kadri.

@NotTheCanucksnaphook  Wouldn't matter what you can get back if you can sign Stastny after. Dump Bozak for whatever, sign Stastny. Keeping Bozak as the 2C would be awful. He's a 40 points player at best without Kessel

ingy56

@Reether  Easily, he's older than the rest and it would shakeup the core. He could quite easily get moved.

@CanuckUKinToronto @Reether  I think Stastny, and centers/players like him, are "traps". They are improvements over what the Leafs currently have, but he is enough of an improvement to get them to a cup contending (which is the ultimate goal) level? A UFA like that is going to cost them at least 5-6 million for 5-7 years. If you get locked into a center who is an improvement but doesn't improve you enough......is it worth getting locked in or is it better to wait for "the home run"?

@Reether @NotTheCanucksnaphook  Kadri's only had 2 full seasons. Maybe last year was just a fluke or "up year" and this year is more typical. We don't really know yet.

Remember when though 11-12 was just a bad season for Kulemin?

darthNihilus
darthNihilus

@loomx @NotTheCanucksnaphook  Yeah you are right. Lets sign Stastny for 6.5 per for an extra 15 points per season! Fuck that! Keep Bozak at 4.2, trade Kadri only if it is a considerable upgrade or a package deal. Stastny also has had some injury troubles and is not exactly huge or aggressive. How many soft centers do we want?

Reether
Reether

@ingy56 @Reether  Ya I think a player like him and maybe if Lupul gets moved too would shake up the core pretty good. It would be a pretty big wake up call.

Obviously our D needs a few fresh faces too.

4evrblue

@CanuckUKinToronto @darthNihilus@Greg Fenton@Reether I'd consider close to or even 6.5. It seems like teams are looking to have 3 good productive centers these days, we already have 2, Stastny could work as the 3rd IMO. He's good on the dot too which is something we've been lacking this year. Always nice to start the play with the puck.

@Greg Fenton @Reether @NotTheCanucksnaphook

I've watched Kadri enough through Junior and his first couple years here to know that how he played for much of this season isn't how he has always played. And his "off" year, isn't really that bad.

CanuckUKinToronto
CanuckUKinToronto

@Greg Fenton @Reether@NotTheCanucksnaphook Further perspective, Getzlaf this year has goal every 52 min and point every 18:33- so last year's equivalent for Kadri was not sustainable- . fyi.. Getzlaf is 2nd only to Crosby this year in points with these stats.. So Kadri would be number 2 point man in whole league if he kept last year's production and got number 1C ice time of Bozie..  just not realistic.. Also shows why you dont trade him

CanuckUKinToronto
CanuckUKinToronto

@Greg Fenton @Reether@NotTheCanucksnaphook Last year was a bit of statistical fluke-  he had goal every 42 min TOI and point eveyr 17 min.. This year Kessel who looks way dangerous than Kadri did last year has goal every 45 min and point every 20 min...  this year Kadri is goal every 67 min and point every 26 min which still got him 50 pts.

Expect him to to be goal every 50 min and point every 22 or so.. That would make him about a 27 goal 60 pt man..

@rustynail @Greg Fenton@Reether@NotTheCanucksnaphook no Rusty, no he did not. It wasn't his sophomore season either. By saying that am I just making excuses for Kadri? Wait, why am I making excuses for a 23 year old that put up 50pts in the first place? I would think his play speaks for itself.

Reether
Reether

@NotTheCanucksnaphook @Great Dane @ingy56 @Reether

I don't think he's a bad player at all. I like Bozak and think he's a good number 2. But I don't think we want to keep both Bozak and Kadri as #1 and #2, and I'd rather keep Kadri. He has more upside, a bit more snarl.

Also as I said at first, Bozak's value will not go up from here. This is probably as good as it gets in terms of getting a return for him.
