Recent Leafs news from MLHS:

  • Toronto Maple Leafs announce 2016 rookie tournament roster
The Maple Leafs would-be headline performer is off playing against elite competition at the World Cup of Hockey, while their recent picks out of Europe this past draft also won’t be in attendance. Among the four 2016 draftees participating are Adam Brooks, Keaton Middleton, Jack Walkerand Nicolas Mattinen.

  • Kerby Rychel: A Q&A with Aaron Portzline
Portzline: Is he capable of being a bottom six forward? Absolutely. I think that might be where he lands. I’m going to reserve judgment on this kid because I don’t know that he — rightly or wrongly, fair or not – has been inspired to play his best hockey the last couple of years. I think it’s that simple. I think he could be rejuvenated by this. I think you could see a different element from him. He was a good player in the AHL playoffs, but he didn’t knock your socks off at that level.

  • leafs-are-a-good-fit/”>Brandon Prust on TSN 1050: Toronto Maple Leafs need sandpaper, veteran leadership
Brandon Prust: That’s one of the first things that we looked at. There were a couple of similar options to Toronto, but I just feel like this is a good fit. I think they maybe need a little extra sandpaper and they’ve got some young guys. They maybe need some veteran leadership and someone that can maybe create some space out there for some of the younger guys and make sure that no one is taking liberties with them. And also, growing up not far from Toronto in London and growing up a Leafs fan, it’s always been a dream of mine to put on the Blue and White. Hopefully, everything works out and I’ll be able to do that all year.

  • Toronto Marlies sign Daniel Maggio to an AHL contract
Through 156 AHL games, Maggio has racked up a massive 640 penalty minutes, which includes 66 fighting majors. Even though he is yet to play 50 games over a regular season in the AHL, Maggio consistently drops the gloves over ten times a season, including a high of 23 occasions during 2014-15.

Today, I am going to take a deeper look at the Leafs’ power play (PP). Although they ultimately ranked 27th, I believe the units were a lot better than their ranking and that Babcock and power play coach Jim Hiller were able to put some building blocks in place for future success. Let’s take a look at some more detailed numbers in order to paint a more complete picture.

  • Lou Lamoriello on Jhonas Enroth, Mark Hunter’s promotion, Brandon Prust’s PTO & more
Lou Lamoriello: (On Mark Hunter) Really, his job description does not change at all. It’s really what he has [already] been doing. It’s an acknowledgment of the role that he has had. When I first came on after being here for a couple of months, I spoke to Brendan about it and we spoke about this – the role that [Hunter] takes and the position that he has and the value that he brings. He should have this title, and was doing things to deserve the title. This is just really a formality of putting it in the public eye.
