If you’ve been following my scoring chance wrap-ups, there’s a lot familiar in the story of tonight’s game.

The Leafs managed to take the lead in the first period, despite being clearly out-chanced, then had a strong second period, in which they consolidated their lead. That was followed by a third period where Calgary again dictated play, and while they got one goal back, Jonathan Bernier managed to keep the Leafs ahead.

Through the first two periods, the chances were fairly close, Calgary having a slim lead. Toronto’s third period defence wasn’t that bad, as they held Calgary to just two ES chances in the last ten minutes; the Flames’ best chances came with the extra attacker in the last 90 seconds.

It was a solid night for the top line, which was in the negative at ES Close, but ended up around even at ES overall, and, after some quiet performances, really got back to driving some offensive chances. The Kadri line had a similar level of offense, though Santorelli and Winnik both ended up with negatives at ES. Peter Holland joined those two at -3, despite his goal. Smith, Panik and Booth, all of whom played under 10 minutes, all ended up as negatives as well. Clarkson and Lupul had decent games, even and generating a few chances.

Morgan Rielly and Stephane Robidas got hard zone starts, but managed to do pretty well with them, as both ended up close to even at ES. The problem on defence was Jake Gardiner and Korbinian Holzer, who ended up with terrible chance numbers. Holzer was on for 12 Flame ES chances in less than 18 minutes, and Gardiner was not much better. This was countered by the big pairing of Phaneuf and Franson, who got back into good form with a strong game.

Franson had a strong game to move back up. He’s not at the GP threshold, but Holzer’s ES numbers look similar to Percy’s, though he’s somewhat worse at ES Close (37.5 ES Overall, 32.0% ES Close). Holzer’s zone starts and competition numbers (from war-on-ice) haven’t been quite as hard as Percy’s, but they are similar.
