NHL to PA: “Let’s give them something to talk about”

It looks like the NHL and Players Association are ready to resume talks this week (most likely Tuesday), and now we can briefly have hope again.

Certainly, a marathon talk between Bill Daly and Steve Fehr is a good start, and it gives even more reason for optimism that nothing was leaked from this meeting.

Where I lose some of my optimism is in a) the fact that this deal will rely on Jeremy Jacobs’ ability to compromise, and b) we live in a world where players value the opinion of clowns like Allan Walsh.

Neither side is content to reach the compromise we all envision for them, and both sides will need to let go of this “trying to win” philosophy that has cost them a quarter of a seasons revenue.

I’ll cap this rant early, but root for radio silence on both sides (an understandable challenge for the PA with 700+ members).

Daly and Fehr meet to find common ground

Daly says marathon CBA session covered a lot of ground

Lockout will affect World Junior Team Roster
There could be a few more Leafs in the mix if players like Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, D.Hamilton, R.Murphy and Strome weren’t locks for the team.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Garret Sparks eyes Team USA
Sparks is considered by many to be the best bet for the backup job on the junior team. If he has a few more games like the one last Friday, he’ll be a lock.

If they’re getting 50% of HRR, the owners will have to back off on many of the other issues. Asking for that, plus the right to constrain players freedom for an extra couple of years seems excessive.

It won’t be going back any further than what it is now, which is 8 years or 28 years old, depending on which comes first.  I think I’m right about the 28 year thing.

The NHL gave alot last time around moving the UFA age from 31 to as early as 26, if the player makes the NHL at 18.

It’s 7 years, or 27 years of age now, I don’t see the players accepting an erosion of that, especially with them already making a significant concession in going from 57% to 50% of HRR.

Yea, you’re right, the owners were proposing 8 years or 28 years of age.

This “make whole” thing is kind of funny after your earlier post today where the players have lost well north of $250M so far.  The owners could cave now and still win and the players would have their moral victory.

IMO Fehr’s strategy has failed. He kept banking on the owners not meeting the deadlines they set, hoping they would cave . They owners have meet every dead line they set . Lockout,1st set of games cancelled ,full month cancelled and then the Classic cancelled. I think there are two more deadlines . The month of December and then the full season. Lets see how far he pushes

No matter what the players say publicly when they do speak, you have to think there are more than a couple of veterans, like say an Iginla, that would like to steer Fehr into the corner and have a little chat about losing 2 years in 8 calendar years.  WTF Donnie, can you pay me my lost $14M out of your final paycheque?
