Where it’s been positive information overall coming out of the CHL when it comes to Leafs prospects, the same can’t be said for the NHL hopefuls currently plying their trade with the Marlies one month into the AHL season.

While the Marlies came back in resounding fashion last night, finally finding some offense to the tune of four third period goals, it was no thanks to the prospects we were hoping to take the next step or at least challenge for it in Joe Colborne, Nazem Kadri, or Ben Scrivens (no disrespect to Carter Ashton, who it was nice to see make an impact last night).

Playing on a line together, Kadri and Colborne were up to absolutely nothing last night and were pointless in a game featuring six Marlie goals. Kadri has just 3 assists in 9 games this season, while Colborne has four assists and also hasn’t scored yet. Ben Scrivens’ numbers are less than flattering through six games and I wouldn’t describe him as playing well in any game since the season opener.

Let’s turn this over to Anthony Petrielli, with some thoughts on the Kadri and Colborne scratching and the Marlies’ struggles:

Nazem Kadri and Joe Colborne played on a line together last night, and are both being healthy scratched for the Marlies game tonight. It’s early in the season, and wouldn’t be getting this much attention if the NHL season was on like it should be, but it’s still noteworthy.

This is a time when Kadri and Colborne have management and coaches full attention, and due to that they should be taking advantage of it and showing everyone why they are both NHL ready. Instead, both have struggled out of the gate. It is worth pointing out that most players on the team are underachieving too, but at the same time, most players don’t have the potential or expectations that either Kadri or Colborne do. That’s just the reality of the situation.

Both have been placed on a variety of different lines, whether it be Kadri playing with Aucoin, McKegg or Zigomanis on different units, or Colborne centering wingers like Komarov, Ashton, and even Kadri too. On one hand, it’s understandable why Eakins has been moving pieces around because he needs to find line combos and his team has largely been in a funk. Conversely, it can make it tough for players to find consistency and build rapports with their line mates. It’s an age old debate in hockey.

The weight of not scoring has clearly gotten to Kadri as he’s gotten back to being a little too
individualistic. At one point last night against Houston, he tried to go through three opposing players at the offensive blueline. When a player is struggling, the best thing to do is usually just keep it simple, get in on the forecheck, put pucks on net, go to the net, etc. Kadri tends to hold onto the puck more when he isn’t scoring. Instead, Kadri should be doing things like this.

He’ll snap out of it though, he’s too good not to. He did have a nice hit against Abbotsford, by the way.

Joe Colborne simply hasn’t been getting dirty enough. He’s losing puck along the wall, not getting to the front of the net enough, and has only 11 shots in nine games. That’s not nearly good enough for a player of his talent and size. Maybe we’ll see something when Colborne returns that suggests when he gets pissed off he uses his size effectively and dominates, but to this point, we have rarely seen that from him and it definitely leaves something to be desired. I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t point out against Abbotsford I saw him put the puck between a defender’s legs, dance around him to the outside, then get robbed by the goalie on a wraparound attempt.

More than anything, as you can probably gather, both players have been too cute. They have each been getting some chances, but the Marlies rightfully expect more, and right now they are benching them because of that. The Marlies have a deep team, but these two should still be leaders on it. Gardiner is clearly just that on the backend, and you can plainly see he’s an NHL player in a lower league… Kadri and Colborne haven’t shown that kind of dominance or superiority yet, this year.

One player I did want to point out quickly is Spencer Abbott. Signed out of Maine last year,
Abbott has found himself watching a lot of games so far this year due to Toronto’s depth, but he’s gotten some chances lately to play and he has looked very, very good. In the first period alone against Houston, he setup Aucoin and Komarov for one-timers in the slot that both missed, and also had a ridiculous behind the back pass to Aucoin in the second. Even with none of those passes being buried, he still notched two assists. Abbott hasn’t shot much yet, but man can he really move the puck. He thinks the game at an extremely high level and is someone to definitely keep an eye on.

I read a comment yesterday that the blogger wrote wondering if Connor Brown was living off Connor McDavid. It`s interesting that the same comment was not made about Biggs and his good fortune of being able to play with Boone Jenner.

Not saying either player is, just wondering why the comment was made about one player, but not the other. After all, Brown is scoring a ton of goals and to me, that would seem to be a bigger accomplishment than picking up a lot of assists.

    Good morning everyone.

Nice to see that the marlies may have turned the corner. But I have to say that Scrivens seeming fall from grace hilites the need for Burke to trade for a reliable goaltender.

    Good Morning Zep

There was point during last season when Scrivens was going through the exact same thing he’s going through now . Dallas benched him at that time too. If I remember correctly it was on a road trip into St. John’s in January. He bounced back big time and lead the team the rest of the season. Like any player whose struggling it sometimes good to take a break ,clear your mind and re-focus. Scrivens will bounce back I’m convinced of that

    Morning BB.

No knock on Scrivens or  Reimer for that matter.  We havent had an unquestionned # 1 since a pre lockout Belfour. Since then weve had poor experienced goaltending (Toskala etc) and poor inexperienced gaoltending (add names here) . That half season of Reimerplaying like a # 1 emphasised how  good this team can be

I thought starting last season with Reimer and Monster was a mistake. I think starting the next season with Scrivens and Reimer could be a disaster that is mitigated by us getting Nathan MacKinnon

IMO the thing that de-railed our season last yr was Brian fucking Gionta . Before that Reimer was off to a pretty decent start . He never did recover from that hit  and as we have since found out since the problem was a neck injury that was diagnosed as a concussion. This lead to a shit show with the goalies and the manner in which Wilson handled them was flat out ridiculous. Add into that all the fucking shenanigans with Allaire and fighting among the coaching staff its no small wonder the season fell apart. I think Burke will try to acquire Luongo as long as the price is right but we all know that may never happen. However its also my feeling Reimer is going to surprise a lot of people who are seemingly writing him off at this point. While it would be nice to have someone like Lou I’m not all that uncomfortable going with Reimer again

IF Burtonboy were not here this site would be long dead, thanks for keeping the nominal NHL momentum up BB.  I find I am so soured by the NHL and the NHLPA that I believe I am mostly over my addiction to watching NHL hockey.  Even when it comes back I really doubt that I will give a rats ass about the games.

As for the AHL I am seriously starting to wonder just how good Eakins really is.  In fact, I do not think he is that good at all.  His Cinderella year is over and so far this year, that team is very very disappointing.  Were it not for Keith Aucoin we would have no scoring at all.

However, I am seriously impressed with our OHL and WHL crop of youngsters.  Very very encouraging.

I am all for trading Kadri now after a few years of defending him mercilessly.  Time for him to move out and on.  Clearly he just does not fit within the Leafs organization for whatever the reasons are.

Plus Brown actually has more points than McDavid while Jenner is clearly the more prolific offensive player compared to Biggs.

With Brown, he seems to be like Seth Griffith, smaller guy with real smarts that will have to develop superior skills to get to the NHL like a Versteeg.  Biggs is a different kettle of fish;  he will obviously make it to the NHL, it’s just a matter of how much he can polish his offensive skills to see if he can ever make it as a top 6 guy.  Sounds like from BCP, he is doing that.  I think his move to the O is the best thing for him.  Although College didn’t seem to hurt Gardiner any. ;)

Im with you 100% on the Gionta hit and the handling of the situation-re Wilson.

I think that there is simply too much pressure in TO for the likes of a Scrivens/Reimer tandem.

Unless your name is Roy or Brodeur, 22 year olds dont make the jump from # 4 on the depth chart to starter like Reimer did or from the low minors to the NHL like Scrivens.

You need a veteran in some role to share the load until Reimer/Scrivens is ready.

Ideally it would be someone like Kiprusoff. Great talent, big but short contract

As another long time Kadri proponent, I hear you and I can live with a trade if there is a decent return.  My only reservation is that generally when he gets to play with highly skilled players, it brings out the best in his game.  Last year before Frattin got hurt, Frattin and Kadri were quite dynamic.  Remember when the Knights traded for Tavares?  When Kadri played with him, he was every bit as good. One thing you can say for sure is that Kadri has never really had a chance to play with decent NHL players for any extended period of time.
