Toronto Marlies

The Toronto Marlies enter the 2018-19 season as the defending Calder Cup champions after capturing their first title in franchise history.

A new General Manager in Laurence Gilman has taken over the reins from now-Leafs GM Kyle Dubas, who left the Marlies organization in a fantastic place for his successor. Over the past five years, the Marlies have evolved into the premiere American Hockey League franchise, from their world-class training and practice facilities, to their player development and sports science departments, to their diet & nutrition and mental wellness staffs. The foundation for continued success and sustained title contention is in place provided Leafs management can continue to supply the Marlies with a steady flow of quality young talent to nurture inside the best development league in the world.

As is always the case at the AHL level, there has been turnover entering a new season, although there is continuity both within the veteran leadership group — former captain Ben Smith has moved on, but Colin Greening, Chris Mueller, Rich Clune and Vincente LoVerde have returned to make up the backbone of the veteran core — as well as in the coaching staff led by head coach Sheldon Keefe. That should help sustain the winning culture that has been established within the organization as it looks to further the development of young talent such as Timothy Liljegren, Rasmus Sandin, Carl Grundstrom, Jeremy Bracco, Pierre Engvall, Dmytro Timashov and others, with the ultimate goal of turning prospects into quality NHL players for the big club.
