Where it’s been positive information overall coming out of the CHL when it comes to Leafs prospects, the same can’t be said for the NHL hopefuls currently plying their trade with the Marlies one month into the AHL season.

While the Marlies came back in resounding fashion last night, finally finding some offense to the tune of four third period goals, it was no thanks to the prospects we were hoping to take the next step or at least challenge for it in Joe Colborne, Nazem Kadri, or Ben Scrivens (no disrespect to Carter Ashton, who it was nice to see make an impact last night).

Playing on a line together, Kadri and Colborne were up to absolutely nothing last night and were pointless in a game featuring six Marlie goals. Kadri has just 3 assists in 9 games this season, while Colborne has four assists and also hasn’t scored yet. Ben Scrivens’ numbers are less than flattering through six games and I wouldn’t describe him as playing well in any game since the season opener.

Let’s turn this over to Anthony Petrielli, with some thoughts on the Kadri and Colborne scratching and the Marlies’ struggles:

Nazem Kadri and Joe Colborne played on a line together last night, and are both being healthy scratched for the Marlies game tonight. It’s early in the season, and wouldn’t be getting this much attention if the NHL season was on like it should be, but it’s still noteworthy.

This is a time when Kadri and Colborne have management and coaches full attention, and due to that they should be taking advantage of it and showing everyone why they are both NHL ready. Instead, both have struggled out of the gate. It is worth pointing out that most players on the team are underachieving too, but at the same time, most players don’t have the potential or expectations that either Kadri or Colborne do. That’s just the reality of the situation.

Both have been placed on a variety of different lines, whether it be Kadri playing with Aucoin, McKegg or Zigomanis on different units, or Colborne centering wingers like Komarov, Ashton, and even Kadri too. On one hand, it’s understandable why Eakins has been moving pieces around because he needs to find line combos and his team has largely been in a funk. Conversely, it can make it tough for players to find consistency and build rapports with their line mates. It’s an age old debate in hockey.

The weight of not scoring has clearly gotten to Kadri as he’s gotten back to being a little too
individualistic. At one point last night against Houston, he tried to go through three opposing players at the offensive blueline. When a player is struggling, the best thing to do is usually just keep it simple, get in on the forecheck, put pucks on net, go to the net, etc. Kadri tends to hold onto the puck more when he isn’t scoring. Instead, Kadri should be doing things like this.

He’ll snap out of it though, he’s too good not to. He did have a nice hit against Abbotsford, by the way.

Joe Colborne simply hasn’t been getting dirty enough. He’s losing puck along the wall, not getting to the front of the net enough, and has only 11 shots in nine games. That’s not nearly good enough for a player of his talent and size. Maybe we’ll see something when Colborne returns that suggests when he gets pissed off he uses his size effectively and dominates, but to this point, we have rarely seen that from him and it definitely leaves something to be desired. I would be remiss, however, if I didn’t point out against Abbotsford I saw him put the puck between a defender’s legs, dance around him to the outside, then get robbed by the goalie on a wraparound attempt.

More than anything, as you can probably gather, both players have been too cute. They have each been getting some chances, but the Marlies rightfully expect more, and right now they are benching them because of that. The Marlies have a deep team, but these two should still be leaders on it. Gardiner is clearly just that on the backend, and you can plainly see he’s an NHL player in a lower league… Kadri and Colborne haven’t shown that kind of dominance or superiority yet, this year.

One player I did want to point out quickly is Spencer Abbott. Signed out of Maine last year,
Abbott has found himself watching a lot of games so far this year due to Toronto’s depth, but he’s gotten some chances lately to play and he has looked very, very good. In the first period alone against Houston, he setup Aucoin and Komarov for one-timers in the slot that both missed, and also had a ridiculous behind the back pass to Aucoin in the second. Even with none of those passes being buried, he still notched two assists. Abbott hasn’t shot much yet, but man can he really move the puck. He thinks the game at an extremely high level and is someone to definitely keep an eye on.

    Haha.  love the “also”.

I think Kadri and Frattin will be very solid together.  Naz your time is running short to impress.  I am a huge supporter but get your head out of your ass and play some hockey.

I would thrive Kiprusoff in a Leafs jersey,…but sigh* Calgary will want to skin us in a deal just to even out the Dion trade where we took them over a table….twice..

I’ve said many times it might be best if Kadri moved on. Not some much because he’s a bust or anything like that. It more a matter of the unrealistic expectations of the fan base and constant sniping he gets in the media.  Its going to be hard for Kadri to live up to all those expectations and in fact his presence is becoming a distraction for the Leafs at times and he’s too much of a lightning rod. Now that being said It doesn’t look to me like the Leafs have any intention of giving up on Kadri just yet. If they are they have a dammed funny way of doing things . You don’t lower a players trade value by publicly criticizing him and benching him. Seems like it more a matter of motivating him IMO

Why wasn’t the comment made that maybe both of them are just good players in their own right, lol?

Agreed, but I also don’t think benching players lowers their value.  Schenn had a shit year and that didn’t stop Philly from being interested.  You have to take into account the arrogance of other organizations – everyone always thinks they’ve got the solution to the problem, or that the other team is just misusing the player, or what have you.  I think as fans, we really under-estimate this part of the equation.  As ridiculous as it sounds in hindsight, I’m sure this is what Sutter thought about Stajan, for example – “Put him with Iginla and he’ll look like a true #1″.
    -
Now, I’m not saying managers are deluding themselves into thinking Kadri’s an all-star, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more than a hand full that have a strong, positive opinion about him.

True and I’ll  just add this.  Its my observation Kadri has become a bit of a slow starter. He’s done pretty much the same thing the last two seasons as well.. Now sure why that’s happened. It may be his apparent confusion over conditioning has his head all fucked up at the start of the year. Hopefully he’s now on the same page as the Leafs  about conditioning  after this last public dust up with Eakins .

i agree that Kadri has been given the short end of the stick, however his cockiness is what gets him in trouble with fans or leaf brass……if you look at the other players drafted afte Kadri, not sureif i would have chosed anyone else…..some players have a cup of tea in the show, but some have not even played any games yet.,………..leddy, kassian, kulikov, cowen?? sure these guys pretty much spent the season in the NHL…………..but are they better?

i honestly think Naz will be shipped out, and i have no problem with it aslong as we upgrade a positon that we desperately need………

I just don’t see it I guess. He has been nothing but humble, saying all the right things, even when the media and fans literally attack him about issues like his weight, or his play, he just apologizes and commits himself to working harder.  Granted, he’s a little stupid not to do these things in the first place, but to me that’s not cockiness.  I’m sure he’s well aware of the fact that he’s not in the show yet.

Did anyone see the Blake Geoffrion incident last night ? I didn’t but apparently he was rushed to the hospital after being cut in the head with a skate blade. Lots of people on twitter sending out tweets of thoughts and Prayers this morning

Good question, you will have to ask the blogger.

It bothers me when something is said about one player, even when you don’t know for sure, why assume it could be that way. Was it said because Brown is a much lower pick than Biggs? Most likely, but is that fair when both players are playing with very good line mates. Perhaps the Leafs have a nice player on their hands with Brown, perhaps not and perhaps Biggs won’t turn out to be anything either, maybe he will never score enough in the NHL. Biggs plays a different game than Brown. From what I have seen, Brown has more skill, soft skills so to speak.

two totally different players, and maybe the -72 for Brown last yr scared off scouts? i know the team he played for was awful but a -72 is really bad,,,wow…………hes playing with confidence this yr, and usually after your 1st or 2nd yr in the league you get adjusted…….i think this could be one of the Leafs best drafts in years…..

It is a scary stat, but you also have to remember how high scoring the Q is.  When you lose 8-1 twice a week, it’s almost surprising his plus/minus isn’t even worse.

Burke loves finding little character gems and watching them develop over a long time.  His best achievement has to be Burrows.  It always surprises me to look at that guys career stats and see what he became.
