Fittingly, in a season that sees Toronto finish up dead last, the Leafs played a miserable final game.

New Jersey dominated the play; while Toronto took an early lead, the Devils pulled ahead in the second period and then got some insurance in the final minutes as Toronto’s attempt to chase the game was almost nonexistent.

The Devils opened up a huge Corsi lead in the second period. While Toronto cut it back at the start of the third period, they still finished behind. The chances were much more one-sided as New Jersey built well on a big first period lead. Toronto did take the neutral zone, making up ground in that area during the third period after struggling early.

After falling behind, New Jersey dominated the rest of the first period, out-chancing the Leafs 12-1 after the first three minutes. The third period was the real disappointment for the Leafs, as they didn’t manage a single chance for despite being behind.

The only line that produced much offense was Tyler Bozak’s, mostly playing with P.A. Parenteau and Brooks Laich.  They scored the Leafs‘ only goal,  and produced six of the team’s seven ES chances. Brooks Laich had a couple of bad shifts with other lines, which explains his worse defensive numbers.

The young players were unimpressive in this game, as Frederik Gauthier was a team worst -6, and William Nylander’s line didn’t produce a single chance in 12 minutes of ES ice-time.

It wasn’t a great game from Morgan Rielly and Martin Marincin to close out the season, as they were the worst two defencemen in chances. Andrew Campbell’s injury meant that the back end was somewhat jumbled, and Rielly and Marincin played plenty of time with different partners as well, both pairing with Jake Gardiner for a time. This also led to a lot of ice time for T.J. Brennan, who played over 25 minutes and over 22 at ES. In that ice time, Brennan had a relatively quiet game, finishing at -2 in chances.
