Mitch Marner nearly matched the Memorial Cup tournament record for points in a single game (6) on Friday night with a dominant two-goal, five-point performance — all achieved inside the first 40 minutes of play — as the London Knights opened their Memorial Cup account with a 6-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels.

Marner’s night’s work included a couple of top corner snipes and a collection of slick assists as he’s begun to assert his mastery over this level of competition on the national stage at the Mem Cup tournament. The OHL MVP is now up to 49 points in his last 19 playoff/tournament games and is riding a seventeen game points streak.

Next up for the Knights are the WHL champion Brandon Wheat Kings on Monday night.
