Trading Phaneuf would be a mistake (tho for all we know he requested it), and if it happens the Leafs may as well go full rebuild and swap Kessel as well. It would take a minumum of 3 years IMO for the defence corps to be competitive.

@Burtonboy  My guess is that many of those teams that want to "slot him properly" don't see him as a $7million player either.

@Belfour20/JB-45  Morning Belf, just imagine Franson getting a Promotion to the Toughest minutes in Hockey, or Gardiner, or Both.  Grass aint always greener :))

Have not talked to anyone about Phaneuf since the deadline . Would he trade him? Sure for the right offer just like any other player on the team

@wendelsway1  Morning WW. My concern with tanking shifts to goal tending.. we finally have it and we're going to suck?

If Nonis really does have to retain salary than his time as GM should really be over. How can one man fuck this team up so bad in such a short time

@Wilbur @Burtonboy  I don't get all this hellabalou about his salary . He only got a $ 500,000 raise and we carried his 6.5 for yrs . That's peanuts on a 70 million dollar cap. If his salary was such an issue they would have traded him long before they re-signed him

Burtonboy

@~Keon  Of course . Get the right deal and anyone can be traded . Question is what does Nonis consider the right deal . I suspect its a lot different then what this board thinks

@~Keon  Normal conversation when GM talk. Doesn't mean there will be a trade made .

Off the top of my head, I see Edmonton, San Jose and Anaheim and Colorado. as partners in such a trade.  Obviously from Col you seek O'Reilly or even the rights to Stasney.  From San Jose, realistically, Pavelski  (they would never trade Couture IMO).  From Edmonton ,their #3 draft pick.

From the Ducks, maybe that kid Devante pelley Smith.

I still think he was beaten down for the same reason Bernier was injured. Too much pressure in the Dzone.

@Komas Taberle @Burtonboy  Everyone outside the room says this . I want to actually hear this from someone with the Leafs to give questions about his leadership even the slightest bit of credence . Till then its just a fans opinion ,nothing more .

@Burtonboy @Komas Taberle

You are right BB, but why do we have to settle for someone who doesn't lead, leadership is badly needed on this team and if you are giving a guy 7M a year I expect it from him.

@Burtonboy @Wilbur  Oh, I don't really have a problem with his salary but if there are teams (per Kypper's suggestion) that see value in him if "slotted properly" then I wonder if they are willing to pay a Dman 7 million to be a number 2 or 3 dman? I think there will be more than enough teams willing to take on his salary.

@~Keon  Nonis and RC scare me Keon , RC seriously has no clue, and it apears Nonis is the same

@Burtonboy @CanuckUKinToronto@TheCanucksnaphookI don't think they would take him off without at the same time taking steps to fill it the hole.  It's undeniable that Phaneuf plays a crucial role for us, but the notion that there are no d-men in the league who would be an unpgrade on Phaneuf flies in the face of reality.  The question is, could we pry one of those d-men loose at a price we can afford?
