Toronto had another poor start, but unlike the Arizona game, they managed to keep the score close.

Despite being outchanced 10-3 at ES in the first 15 minutes, they were down only 1-0, and a late push, including Kessel’s goal, got them level. The second period was similar, with Colorado superior until the last few minutes. A similar pattern played out in the third, with Colorado taking the lead through Duchene, after which the Leafs generated some chances as they pushed for the equalizer, eventually being rewarded with the goalie out. An entertaining and even overtime period ended scoreless, and Colorado secured the bonus point in the shootout.

After that dismal first fifteen minutes, there wasn’t much between the two teams. You can see in the ES Close numbers how Colorado started strongly in the third, getting ahead, while the ES overall numbers show the effect of Toronto’s chase.

It seemed like most of the time Colorado had a good stretch of play James van Riemsdyk was on the ice for the Leafs; he was a -9 and on for sixteen Colorado chances. That was by far the worst of the forwards; even his linemate Bozak was only a -3. Kessel and Kadri were among the players that traded chances; they both ended up around even and with big numbers at both ends. Leo Komarov had a strong game, as he was on for a lot more chances than usual, partly because Winnik’s injury and the overtime period saw him earn more than 20 minutes of ice time. Richard Panik, who scored the equalizing goal, had his best night as a Leaf as another player who took an increased role after Winnik went out. Sam Carrick wasn’t effective, -4 in less than six minutes of ES ice time.

With Morgan Rielly surprisingly scratched, Stuart Percy drew back in; he was -1, having an okay night in scoring chances despite some high-profile errors. Roman Polak continued to be strong, and Stephane Robidas had a nice game as well. Dion Phaneuf was the defenceman who had a rough night; he played more than 30 minutes at ES, but ended up a -7 at ES close.

Ashton looks set to stay atop this list for a while, given his suspension. Van Riemsdyk’s numbers took a big drop, while Panik has moved up off the bottom of the rankings.
