- Mike Halford: Glencross: ‘Kind of a shock’ to get cut by Leafs (NBC Sports)
“It was kind of a shock,” Glencross explained, per the Calgary Sun. “They told me Sunday they had too many guys filling the same roles in the same spots. Instead of stringing me along, they let me go, so there was a chance someone else could get me.”
I - ClrkAitken: Maple Leafs’ Season Preview: Three Questions (PPP)
If it doesn’t happen this year, you really wonder if it’s ever actually going to happen. Nazem Kadri turns 25 years old at the beginning of the season and is on a one-year contract, giving him a chance to prove to management that he can be a key contributor beyond the rebuilding stage.
I - Frank Seravalli: Crosby No. 1 for sixth straight year on TSN’s Top 50 list (TSN.ca)
Riding sky-high expectations, Connor McDavid became the first player to make the TSN Top 50 before appearing in an NHL game. McDavid, 18, ranked No. 37, but second-overall pick Jack Eichel did not make the cut.
I - Tom Hunter: Travis Dermott – Leafs OHL Prospect Preview (MLHS)
Despite his point production, Dermott should not be seen as the stereotypical undersized offensive defenseman who is a below average defender. He is smart, poised, and knows when to jump up into the play, doing so without taking unnecessary risks that could cost his team defensively. He is a mature player in the sense that he doesn’t get flustered or panic under pressure.
I - Kevin McGran: Maple Leafs goalies Bernier, Reimer in close race for starting job (Toronto Star)
Bernier has been the No. 1 goalie in Toronto for the past two seasons — though not by that wide a margin — and he has a contract through the 2016-17 season, so the smart money is on him starting the season Wednesday at home to Montreal. But there are no guarantees.
