Toronto again fell behind early, giving up a pair of power-play goals to the Sharks.
The Leafs picked up their play after that, moving into a lead in the final minute of the second. They opened up a two goal lead early in the third, but San Jose immediately pulled one back before tying the game with eight minutes to play. The Leafs were able to get through to overtime again, but lost their second straight game in the 3-on-3, with Brent Burns scoring the winning goal.

San Jose dominated the possession and chance stats early in the game, but the Leafs pulled things back over the course of the second period, and the two teams finished basically level in both areas. The Leafs had a clear advantage in the number of zone entries, but San Jose made up for it by having much better results in terms of controlled entries.
The Leafs gave up the first six chances of the game, but out-chanced the Sharks 9-2 to close the second period, pulling about even overall. The two teams then went back and forth in the third period, but the San Jose were the only team to earn chances in the overtime.

Peter Holland, Michael Grabner and Daniel Winnik were matched mostly against Joe Pavelski and Joe Thornton, and managed a pretty strong offensive performance. While they had relatively few offensive zone starts, they were one of the more effective attacking trios. They did finish below even in chances, as their defensive numbers weren’t good, Holland on for seven ES chances against.
Joffrey Lupul was moved onto the line with Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov, and like that top line, they generated chances, with Lupul and Kadri ending up narrowly in the positive. Tyler Bozak’s line was essentially even against Patrick Marleau’s trio, but the most effective line was the 4th line, with Byron Froese and Shawn Matthias having strong games.
The defensive pairings were changed up, as Roman Polak played mostly with Morgan Rielly, on the Leafs best offensive pairing. Polak, going up against harder competition than we’ve usually seen him this season, had the best chance numbers on the team, finishing as a +3. Frank Corrado played a more substantial role than in his debut, and also had good results, finishing in the positive, and better than the man he played with most, Matt Hunwick.
The only pairing to stay the same was Jake Gardiner and Dion Phaneuf, and they had a solid game, finishing pretty much even in their 18 ES minutes.
